Fighting Games Weekly |8/10-16| Gods(Beard) Among Us

ANIME WARNING:

In Persona, who sould be a good choice for an Unga character?

Someone you can go in and just start bullying people (And who doesnt have insane execution)

Minazuki? I am going to say Minazuki.

The real answer is probably Narukami, but his execution feels just a tad harder for me.

Savage post

I'm so happy that we dodged the community death sentence. Rising Thunder is fun, but I would have liked never seeing FADCs again in anything.

Shaoweb is making a fighting game and FGW is his focus test group.

Cool, I'm not insinuating he should stop, let him ask in every thread til he gets the info he wants.

I'm just too lazy for dat ish and even if it is a simple question he's asking, for whatever reason it feels like I'd end up writing a dang essay just to give a proper meaningful answer xp

Just a fun tidbit, was watching one of Epicnamebro's Dark Souls vids and he was talking about the fire spell Combustion.

Apparently the devs said that the inspiration for this spell was Kyo from KoF.

Minazuki/Sho-with-Persona probably. Good damage, easy mode pressure, shenanigans that will at least make other beginners tear their hair out and if all else fails just do yolo moon smasher to steal wins.

Narukami is a good pick too. Maybe Akihiko.

That's pretty cool.

My fav Dark Souls pvp memory was using Great Fireball (I think that was the name? Or maybe it was Great Combustion?) like Oni's U2 countering jump-ins. Was in Sen's Fortress playing hide and seek with an invader, so I ran and jumped over the broken bridge leading to the merchant. He of course wouldn't jump while I was there at the edge, so I turned my back to him figuring that (like in Halo Reach with Armor Lock) most players don't think about how you can pan the camera to target them with your back turned. He jumped and died in a fiery explosion on landing. :D

Aaaaaaaaaaany how...it's that time again.

I am just going to answer these questions as to how they relate to EXVS.

1. Best: EXVS, DLC added over the games life time, more than a year after release.
Worst: EXVS, A lot of DLC is equivalent of a palette swap, is not properly balanced. Old DLC can now be used for free but in very restricted circumstances.

2. Best: EXVS, arcade versions get updated with new characters over their life time, new characters are added based on cross promotional opportunities such as a Theatrical release of Gundam UC.
Worst: EXVS, the console version is 2 years behind the arcade version at the minimum.

3. Best: EXVS, It's based on Gundam which is one of the biggest and most recognizable franchises in Japan. The game is just one part of the whole brand that is being managed.
Worst: EXVS, Bandai fucked up with building up the Gundam franchise popularity in america and now will never willingly bring over anything that's licensed based on that property.

4/5. Best: EXVS, fanservice game so a lot of it is designed to appeal based on the characters and the shows they are from. Original audio tracks and licensed tracks from the shows are used, original voice actors for the characters speaking their most memorable lines. Characters are usually flashy and fun to use, combos are super simple and are pretty much one button. Combat is very slow compared to 2D games, requiring less practice and reflex based reactions.

Worst: EXVS, characters are very authentic to the source material so they might not fit into the meta game. Game has a very specific high level of play in mind that is not demonstrated and taught to the new players. Promotional videos encourage a style of play that is more likely to make them lose.

Damn, would have loved to see that.

Too bad there was no easily accessible record function last gen.

Dude forgot the first rule of fighting games:

Don't jump.

The real answer is probably Narukami, but his execution feels just a tad harder for me.

You actually need to know how to play the game to win with Narukami. He's really good with insane normals, but no gorilla.

Minazuki though, just hit j.B and 4A and you're done.

Everybody online just plays Minazuki or Adachi orz.

Really? I always thought it was the opposite. Yu has a really straightforward moveset that most people used to fighting games would know what to do with. Maybe that's what you mean though since other characters are less fair.

It's hard for me to play characters in that game that aren't Mitsuru or Koromaru, though.

Just wanted to say that the Keiko link is amazing.

So, I have to agree that the fanservice is amazing. G Gundam characters going nuts over golden suits, pilots from different series recognizing similar tastes, etc; shit is just great.

But I disagree that combat is very slow compared to 2D games. Every time I tried do show GvG to someone they just would see shit exploding for five minutes. It should be said that I didn't have the chance to play Extreme Vs though, so maybe that version is slower than Next Plus (though it doesn't seem to be the case from what I watch).

Decent job for first thread, fitting title.

1.Best: SFV from what we have heard so far, there is a chance they will screw up somewhere but right now i think the chances are low, also KI i guess.
Worst: i am not sure

2.Best: SFIV was very good in that department i think.
Worst: UMVC3 released too soon, turned a lot of people off.

3.Best: MK for casuals and SF for both casuals(not as much as mk obviously) and the more competitive players.
worst: i would say tekken, i may be wrong but my impression is that the game was a lot more popular and recognizable in the past.

4.Best: MK. The gore, the single player content and the marketing are very appealing to casuals i think. SFV needs to step up in that department.
worst: Arcsys games, maybe also tekken for the same reason as above.

5.Best: I am not sure.
Worst: SFIV is not friendly to new players and it does not have the best training mode for experienced players either.
I have to say tekken as well for me personally, even if the training mode was ok, trying to become better at the game was a lot more boring and time consuming compared to other games for me so i stopped playing even though i like the game.

6.Best: MK and SF appear to be the most succesful games right now, i hope SFV brings a lot more people to fgs.

Good stuff GB. GeeBees among us.

I new weekendGAF would bring madness. I ate a 20 oz steak and prepped the outside of my house to be repainted. I considered asking everyone's favorite color scheme (primary + two other colors) but afraid of the answers. We chose blue grey white and orange.

Yu is really strong and really straightforward, but if you try to just go gorilla and throw buttons at people you can lose pretty easily. You need to be solid at fighting games from start to finish with him. So yeah, most people would be able to figure out how to play him but you do have to know fighting game stuff.

Minazuki, on the other hand, can actually just ignore good neutral game sometimes by slamming the Persona on the screen or jumping and doing a j.B that will just beat most normal AAs and air-to-airs. When you fight Minazuki, you've gotta respect what he's putting on the screen even vs the most basic shit. I feel really bad for new FG players who got into Minazuki and assume that's how you play neutral in ASW games, cause he is definitely quite silly in that regard.

There were 3 Minazuki's in my pool. Definitely the gorilla of the game. Just keep pressing buttons and you'll eventually hit something.

Edit: Also that opening post. Change is weird.

Isn't mitsuru kinda unga? (Very limited p4U experience). I thought she just stabbed and froze people till they died.

Is unga RTSD or beefy character you just go ham with?

Virtua Fighter event

I've been helping plan and coordinate this event since its inception and I hope people tune in. NYGX is a labor of love for us and I'm hoping that even if you haven't played VF you'll check out what we've been able to muster up after about a year of planning. It feels too self-serving to make a thread for NYGX, but I'll drop a link in FGW when we go live.

Alternating yellow and red vertical stripes for maximum eye strain to confuse and frighten potential home invaders.

So the Furious Blog Twitter accouunt posted this image with just the word "DoguRank" on it, and I've seen some big name GG players RT it(I originally saw it on Nage's RTs). I'm assuming it's Dogura's current Xrd tier list based on that, but I can't be too sure.

"unga" is the sound a goriilla makes, and gorilla was a term JP players would use for characters that have hitboxes they can just throw out without needing to give a fuck and generally have easy high damage and pressure. American anime players really like to complain about characters so they ran away with the term full stop, but it is actually a pretty decent descriptor in some cases. Mitsuru can't really throw out hitboxes with low risk like that, or even convert into big damage easily. She's really good at neutral and pressure but in a more mindful way. Vanilla Mits was pushing it though >_>

Why is Leo so prevalent in American tournament play?

Eh, I made threads for two of the bigger tournies I did. I say go for it.

That makes so much more sense now!

Yeah vanilla mitsu is kind of my reference for the game as far as balanced. I know ken, minazuki, yu and Margaret and teddy are pretty top in that game?

Cool to see bedman up there more. His deja vu pressure is always cool to see.

You should definitely make a thread for it.

You could probably lock in Yosuke, Narukami, Ken, and Teddie into the top 5 and nobody could really argue with you. Margaret and Minazuki are both high tier but Idk about top 5. That 5th slot is competitive with those two, Aigis, and you could even argue for Akihiko if you really wanted to.

The classic example is Leo in Xrd, he has big buttons and you don't need to know a lot of the finer points of the game to get wins with him.

Yes, I play Leo

Damn that was a good trailer. Great editing. Excellent song choice too. Almost felt like a music video for the song at certain points lol.

I play Leo as well. Anime players love pressing buttons, Leo loves punishing people that love to press buttons. Lots of people get mad at this.

I played one of the commentators at EVO...Jeff Hunter or something like that? He beat me, but it was a close game. Afterwards, he was complaining about how braindead Leo is. Made me laugh.

Learn to faultess. :P

What makes akihiko scary? Is it frame traps?
