Destiny: the taken kings new approach to story telling

I feel like the circumstances are different this time though. The original story was cut out because (apparently) it wasn't very good, and so they had to stitch together a story last minute. This time they had time to plan more and have listened to feedback from fans

So they had years to put together a story and it wasn't good in the end yet now as they pump put their third expansion in 12 months they did have sufficient time to plan and execute? If the vanilla release was last minute, how will this be less last minute when they've put out more content in a shorter span of time?

I still think they should implement the grimoire lore into the game. There's some fascinating lore in there which would help convey the story a whole lot better but for some reason they've put it all on their website. Puzzling. Why did you pay your writers for years and years on website content and not your actual game?

It's their first expansion. As in,actual "expansion".
The others were way smaller DLCs.

And yes, I know the season pass is called "expansion pass"

The Grimoire was apparently written just a few months before release in an extreme rush. They winged it.

The conversation around Destiny would be so much better if they had just called the first two expansions "episodes."

That seems odd to me. The Grimoire content is far more interesting than the actual writing in the game. If they really winged it then they did one hell of a job there.

Grimoire is being moved into Destiny in TTK I believe

I really didn't like Destiny due to their lack of focus on story. It is mainly becuause I'm a Halo fan. I wonder if i would like this though.

Sadly the Grimoire will still be companion app/website only.
They are just adding places in (pretty sure) the new mission spaces/patrol space that you can scan. Basically a "new grimoire".
You will also 100% get new Grimoire cards, I am sure of that.

I can only advise everyone to just get the companion app and have it on a phone/tablet next to you while you play. Allows you to immediately check out a new grimoire card you got :D

To be honest, there's nothing here to suggest there's really going to be a massive movement to do actual storytelling.

It'll be slightly less embarrassing. It still seems like 1/10th of what it should be.

And it still seems way to quest focused. There's still nowhere, nowhere, nowhere near enough backstory for the world to be interesting and feel coherent.

Because building a story for TTK from the ground up will probably result in a better, more coherent story then one haphazardly put together before launch.

It's not. Watch the video.

Huh, I read someone on GAF saying it was but guess they were mistaken. Pretty idiotic decision honestly. TTK will still be dope as fuck but how difficult is it to add a simple Grimoire menu in the game? That would take like what, a tiny group of coders

Very interested, I know I will be busy with Phantom Pain but definitely going to keep my ear out on impressions once it's out. Hopefully it's as good as it sounds!

Pretty sad they're sat there boasting about things that should have been in the game from the start and things that are standard in a game trying to tell a story. Acting like the it's a revolution that people grew attached to the barebones characters that were there, what did they really expect?

But really, looks great and It's getting me excited to actually play Destiny again.

I think this game looks super cool. If it comes to PC I want to play. And I would love to play with the Xbox and PS guys.

I would like a bundle with the xbox elite controller (and the new awesome looking keypad attachment) and the dongle in some neutral Black-PC friendly color scheme. Perhaps with a subtle destiny touch, but not too much. I dont want to buy such an expensively themed peripheral. No, you know what. Forget the Destiny branding. Just bundle the controller for a good price. Would be nice. Seems this game is made with a controller in mind.

It seems like Bungie is still hamming up the nomenclature for their vendors. Yes, they are "characters", but I imagine most people tune out their dialog while they scroll through their bounties and wares. Maybe I'd appreciate them more if I could actually see them out on some of the missions alongside me.

Contextualizing them within the story is a start, but it's still a long way from where they should be.

It felt like Destiny was built as though everyone who would play it, was a huge WoW player who was well versed on instances, LFG, etc.

hopefully they fix that

I can understand getting burned by vanilla destiny at launch, but everything we've heard about taken king has been good news

Everything we heard about TDB had been good news too until they eventually revealed the exotic upgrade system. You know, right after they got everyone to waste their exotic shards.

Totally on-board, as long as they introduce a way to skip the cutscenes (old and new)

Any confirmation that they are leaning that way?

Why not get the Legendary Edition then? Comes with the base game, both expacs, and TK. Unless that isn't available across the pond. I don't buy physical anyway, so I have no clue what TK status is, or if you even need the two expansions to play TK.

There is a retail version with the base game, both expansions, and TTK for $60. Not sure what it costs over there.

Or you just trade in your vanilla disc and buy the physical "legendary edition" which comes with vanilla destiny, dark below, house of wolves AND taken king. for 45 pounds.

I paid £40 for vanilla. I looked into it and CEX will give me £8 in real money for it. £32 for vanilla Destiny. Then I buy The Legendary Edition for £45. That's £77. That's still not particularly enticing for a base game that had as much content as a £20 game, two expansions that were about a quarter of the size and one that's about half the size. £45 for the Legendary Edition straight up would be really good value, but I'm fucked because I had the gall to try and support the game from day one.

The referral to "Destiny Year One" isn't helping. What's to say there won't be another version next year with vanilla, the year one expansions and a potential set of year two expansions for £45. It's just not a model I feel happy investing in. But some people might find the value in it, I suppose, so sorry for calling you lot stupid.

Bungie fixing the story ? I'll believe it when I see it . Does no one remember their dark below promises?

Harold Ryan: The structure of the story in this expansion is different than the story in the core game. Looking at how the story plays and how we wanted to repackage it and reacting to fan feedback, we're taking a different approach to the story in this one. So it's going to be driven in a very interesting way for players, as you meet with Eris in the Tower and follow her guidance through the story.

Dark belows "story" was worse then the main games.

I think including the price you paid for the game at launch is quite unfair, because you're not spending £77 in one go. Almost half of that was done last year. Also, you've only played the original game. In the legendary edition, that equates to like a quarter of the whole package.

Next year would be Destiny 2, not Destiny year 3.

And really when you think about it, TTK Legendary Edition has more content in it than 99% of games that charge the same price. Hundreds of guns, 20ish multiplayer maps, three raids, 8ish strikes, it`s a great way to get into Destiny.

It is unfortunate that you didn't like the original game, but you can't really fault Bungie for making a cheaper way for new players to get into their game.

Nothing in that quote is wrong though. Dark Below followed one narrative from the missions to the strike and the raid. It's inherently different from the main game, which was all over the place.

For the same reason he hasn't answered you... he's a card carrying member of the GAF Anti-Destiny Squad.

A not-so-secret group of gamers with but one mission. No, silly... not to play and discuss the games they enjoy. They're here to bag on Bungie's opus and anyone who enjoys it.

Don't worry, you won't ever have to look too hard to find them, as they turn up in each and every Destiny discussion.

I disagree. It wasn't a huge step up but I've grown fond of Eris during my time with her and her quest for revenge. Her background and lore are very interesting too, so I can't agree with you on that.

They can do way better than TDB though.

Well TDB story was different than the vanilla Destiny story, and it was a bit better even if still not good.

TTK is the first time they have promised numerous cut scenes.

Edit: I always thought the Halo stories were so bad that it was funny to laugh at them. So I never approached Destiny expecting Star Wars or anything.

I think it's funny how quickly people are forgiving bungie because instead of releasing a $35 season pass with 3 hours of original content they are releasing an expansion for $40 with 4 hours of original content.

I listened to the game informer podcast and it sounds promising but so did vanilla destiny. I'm not ready to write them off but I really dislike the focus on repeated content and mmo design.

Hoping its a lot better . Tdb story was terrible and I felt majorly ripped off by the end of it (Crotas end was the only worthwhile addition).

Just curious what time with her? The 5 seconds you spend grabbing her bounty ?

A decent story is something they should save up for Destiny 2.

They've already butchered everything about the main game's lore and characters. That is what needed to be solid in the first place in order for the rest to work. I doubt people will care all of a sudden ; I know I won't.

It's like putting a steel door in front of a house made of tiny wooden sticks.

They said in the video it would take 6-7 hours to complete the story, and that's not even the endgame stuff.

TTK is Destiny 2. It's literally called update 2.0.

I think they can salvage something if they retroactively go back through Destiny 1 and add cutscenes , new dialog , scanning in existing levels etc

I would definetely replay from scratch if some additional stuff was added (I'm talking 20 mins of extra stuff).

But I don't think bungie are doing that
