So apparently our boy chibi, famous for getting caught cheating a frame perfect trick while speedrunning paper mario and for being a loud, awkward asshole on a couch at a GDQ and having the runner say "I'd prefer if if you'd be quiet" comes up with the awesome idea of doing some kind of memorial stream for Iwata. Only instead of a memorial stream where you play games it was some sappy mock funeral attempt where we were constantly reminded to follow and subscribe as he or his mods put the chat in sub only mode.

Like holy shit using something like this to whore for attention is deplorable. Just play a Kirby game or enjoy gaming like everyone else has been.

I hope for the sake of runners that this guy is not going to SGDQ

I can't really get into was as I can with games done quick, it's most likely because there's so many events on over the year now that my excitement for them is dropping a bit, I tend to watch the games you don't see too often now as they are more exciting then another Mario 64 run even if they are beautiful to watch.

This has always been super impressive to me. He has literally zero competition, both because it's not (from what I gather) a very competitive category and because he's just way better than anyone else. Despite this, he keeps improving both the route and his record constantly, all by himself. I mean you can undertand any% going very low when there are so many runners competing for the top spot, but in 100% there's only ZFG. He's so good.

Funniest thing to me is how when he gets bored, instead of going to another game, he just runs crazy arbitrary categories until he beats the WR by 10 minutes or something lol.
 
ZFG is the best
He has a great attitude towards speedrunning, his stream and chat are super chill and he's so fucking good at OoT that I'm often still impressed even though I've seen the run a hundred times

I remember asking him if he was going to pick up TP since he really likes the run and his response was basically "Eh, I'll never run out of OoT categories". I don't think I enjoy anything as much as he enjoys playing OoT.
 
Hey so an online marathon is happening this weekend starting today: Pokemon Speed Runs and it goes until Sunday.

The schedule can be found here (schedule adjusts to your timezone automatically) and it's basically covering all 6 generations of Pokemon (including Stadium, Colosseum, XD, and etc).

Thought I'd post it since marathons like this aren't promoted very often -- maybe we should start trying to make threads for marathons even like this? I dunno.
 
I decided I want to be a NES speedrunner. I know the first rule of running is run what you love. So I think I may go with Contra or Castlevania or even CV3. Heck maybe NG I don't know I haven't made up my mind. Leaning towards Contra

Is there any guides out there for those games?
 
I'll be in the chat used for SGDQ for the pokethon, if anyone would like to join me when it goes live. Can also invite people who are interested in a less werster-y chat.

Usually you won't find much in the way of guides. I found the best way when I was learning was to watch some other recorded runs (don't go for WR runs as they'll likely use tricks you won't be able to pull off initially) and practice offline.

Once you're happy you can finish a run, regardless of the quality, start streaming - both practice and attempts (but continue practicing offline). You'll find that runners of the game will often pop in as they tend to follow their own games on Twitch, and offer you advice.

Join https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/ and post in the respective game you're learning, see if there's any discussion for routes and don't be afraid to ask for help. Speedrunners are always happy to see new people join and will often provide you with as much advice as you need.

ZFG said he'd be content with the category once he got that sub-4:20 but he's disappointed nothing about the run was particularly outstanding. The first 1.5 hours of the run was mediocre and the rest was just "decent" according to him.

Said he'll keep doing runs for at least another week before switching over to running Portal or Twilight Princess.
 
Pardon the double post, but trihex is talking about some initiative. About to get to some specifics but his damn sub sound is interrupting him. I'll edit with any details if folks don't want to tune in.

Pertains to bringing more people in to speedrunning and growing the community.

Alright, after much unneeded delay, the announcement is a series of speedrunning tutorials that -- and I'm filling some words in here -- are designed to bring people in to the actual act of speedrunning (routing, understanding the game, etc.) with the goal of making the community less intimidating.

and now a bit more fluff...

Okay, looks like the idea is basically to make a more consistent and easily digested presentation for these tutorials. I assume this means giving tutorials something of a 'code' so that people can more easily figure out what shit's going on (having a symbol for a clip, sequence break, different strats, etc.) and interpret the admittedly confusing shit that goes on in these runs. There would also be a timeline for these events so you could anticipate and better appreciate the events, pausing to explain things. Also production value.

Seems that he's planning to bring in as many people as he can to do as many videos as possible. I think he's going to find that lots of people aren't super willing to put in the work.

Oh, actually maybe he's editing everything? unfortunately the presentation isn't terribly explicit about some seemingly important details.

Looks like initially the series will only be Yoshi's Island, with no current plans to expand to other games. That's... not great.

My thoughts:
Thus far it sounds like it'll be a nice series of videos assuming it'll happen. But it'll take time. A hell of a lot of time. I think he's underestimating the willingness of viewers to tell themselves "oh, I couldn't do that" and quickly give up. It also doesn't do a whole lot to bring in glitch hunters or routers, who Trihex says himself are the people the community is really lacking.

His example doesn't instill confidence, despite me thinking the idea is solid. I think Trihex has the right idea here, but he isn't necessarily the best person to make the videos. He doesn't seem to have the best read on the things that a newbie would struggle with. He's talking about audio and visual queues for blind shots, when he should be talking about the actual locations of the red coins and why a specific strat is fast, rather than just saying "here's the strat". He's teaching hard facts for memorization rather than theory for implementation and experimentation. The "what not to do" stuff is actually really good though, that's helpful.
