Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

I know what you are saying but he could have made both. Gameplay and story.

With the environment of that place, I'm surprised he got to make what he did tbh.

holy crap stefaniejoosten is soo pretty she speaks 3 languages really looking forward to using her as my partner for missions...☺️

So true. I don't normally pay much attention to these ladies out there, but she is gorgeous.

OK. I cant help but be hyped. But I know I wont be able to afford this or have the time for a while to justify a day one purchase.

So until then, I need to get the story straight. Anyone have any Youtube vids of a good recap?

I only played MGS last year, from MGS 2-4. But I'm probably forgetting a lot. I can't even remember who or how Ocelot fits into the story any more, or who Gray Fox is.

I didn't finish Peace Walker, and after reading some summaries, it sounds incredibly confusing. Anyone know a decent video that can help me jog my memory and piece together Peace Walker?

oh eyah, now that the game is out in the wild
do we know if getting caught is still an insta-alert or if the guards have to radio it in before everything goes full alert?

Pretty sure they have to radio it in? That's what the bullet time slow down is for. I've seen it mentioned in the reviews.

Streamer played some of the cassettes. There's absolutely back and forth dialogue there between Snake and his contacts for the briefing tapes etc. Way more dialogue than you'll get from the cutscenes so far. That's a sigh of relief for
God damn it. I need this game right fucking now. This is so exciting!

well, in ground zeroes the bullet time isn't time for the guy to radio it in, its just a little time for you to react after he notices you and take him out because the SPLIT SECOND that bullet time ends everything goes full alert

i've been hoping they would go back to mgs2-4 style (instead of mgs1) where the guard himself goes into alert, but everyone else doesn't unless the guy that saw you calls it in via his radio

Watch these videos. They helped jog my memory on certain character and critical events that occurred through each game

Each videos does an absolute fantastic job of explaining and connecting each installment to the big picture. Makes you realize how convoluted MG's story can become, but still enjoyable nevertheless!

Tagging what I've seen just in case but it's very much GZ

I'd describe it as 2 versions of detection. 1 is the "Suspicious person spotted" where they don't have a clear enough idea of what they saw to engage directly and choose to radio/investigate. 2 is the hard compromise where after the initial shock of seeing you (if you're coming from an all clear state) results in reflex or if you're not using it there's still a slow reaction to what the guard is seeing, although far shorter.

Once that soldier opens fire it's full alert. Enemies within hearing range rush towards the sound of contact and the installation or outpost etc goes batshit. The only unknown factor is the range of audio like if you get spotted on the outskirts of a village etc. I imagine in that case a radio would be needed but I've yet to see that specific case.

Reflex doesn't have anything to do with radios really. That's just the time you have to take someone out before they start to fire on you.

Also KonamiUK put up an article, but it's confirmed you can listen to cassettes and music through the TPP companion app for phones. They mentioned it functions similar to iDroid, but didn't mention if you could adjust motherbase.

Fuck YES.

Saw a pre-order posting on my local shop for the LE MGSV PS4..

I'm so tempted right now to sell my launch PS4 for that. :O

I just meant "radio it in" as in, the alert triggering. If you dispatch them while in reflex mode, the alarm doesn't go off as long as you were only spotted by one dude. Didn't know he was referring to the literal delay where an enemy had to use the radio to radio it in. Lol. That's probably never coming back. Too slow.

Lol completely misread that. Yeah if you take them out in time you're good. If they actually open fire you're compromised.

It was already an absolute pleasure replaying most of the earlier games. If the gameplay in TPP is that good, I really doubt it's going to be a big hassling replaying a small portion of the experience to complete extra side-ops or difficulties.

Kojima wants you to experience everything his game has to offer, Cyb. It's a good thing imo.
It's not a good thing at all. It was one of the worst parts of the game. Who likes being forced to do tedious stuff like that? People who like this kind of stuff are the same folks who can spend 30+ hours on Ground Zeroes, but most people aren't like that. The game is long enough as it is without being forcefully annoying.

Guys check your order.

I just got an e-mail from my local store and they told me the collector's edition is delayed for 2 weeks because Konami has delivery problems.

Cancelled my LE from Amazon because I just can't bear to deal with any possible shipping delays. Guess I'll pick one up from eBay in a year or two.

Only 30 hours? Pffft.

For what it's worth, Rocco from Mega64 (who are good friends with Kojima) was invited to Konami (despite their P.T. video putting them on blast) to play MGS5.

He only stayed for one session/day since he's not obligated to play the entire thing like reviewers are, but he said that the story and directing is master-class and what he played was far better than MGS4, which he also loved. He did mention the freedom in which he was able to approach missions too, but the first thing he mentioned was the directing and story work.

Mega64 are big nerds about movie culture and filmmaking, spending entire podcasts discussing things like Evangelion and how Serial Experiments Lain influenced the way they shoot, so to me, them remarking on this aspect tells me that the amount of story is going to do justice to the series.

Was Kojima's famous line "you will feel ashamed of your words & deeds" (about Quiet) proven true by the game? Just a yes or a no please, no spoilers.

Having fun with a game is never tedious. I would argue it's the point of gaming.

That said I agree being forced into things that should be optional is shitty.

I think that was closed off from the reviewers as there was a big Gamespot stink about it yesterday.

This was a really good move from them, "don't want to talk about it ? Sure, we'll just throw an article about it being pay only to force you to react."

Spoilers in Washington Post review -_- ... be careful. Only skimmed but read something about Quiet.

FFS, I managed to avoid spoilers until now. Buh bye.

Glad I read a bit further before clicking that Washington Post review, sucks that they have done that :\

Got my email from game saying they are processing my collectors edition order yus!

Me too! Didn't think my hype levels could go any higher than they already are but, what'dya know!

94 Metacritic works for me!

Still better than Witcher 3, Bloodborne, and as good as the masterpiece that is MGS4!

Tapes v Codecs is a dumb argument. It's about context. Taped are just audio clips of random conversations. Codec calls are about context. I'm interacting with someone about something in front of me in the moment. It's like the difference between having a conversation with someone and listening to a pre recorded one. It's not the same thing.

Also you realize you can just pop open the codec and call when you're interested in learning something but with tapes you have to open up the menu and look through tapes. It'd be better if you got a happy medium where they just gave you the choice to listen to a tape contextually.

The context of codec calls are literally "it's too expensive to animate all this script". That's it.

I think people have a little bit too much nostalgia these days. As a kid I could listen and be cool with 15 minute cutscenes in MGS3 as people talk on and on and on.

11 years later I can no longer stand that. I can't listen to a 10 minute codec call, it's too fucking long and it completely destroys the flow of the game. The tapes are perfect middle grounds of allowing the player to play the game and listen to side stories/interesting things that were strictly held to stopping the game, calling a random person and listening to them talk about Godzilla.

Also your comparison to popping in the codec when compared to finding a tape is pretty silly. Most of the time when you called someone you get a random conversation, only under specific situations would you get a context sensitive codec conversation.

So I've been riding the hype pretty high for the last few days, and it reminded me of when I got MGS4 a few days earlier than release! I actually posted about it on NeoGAF too, so I went tracking and found it lol:

The replies in the thread are really funny too. Man that was awesome, sadly I can't see it happening again now 7 years later.... the place I got it from was taken over by EB Games! :( Maybe thats why they sold it, didn't care anymore.

Geeeez 2008 doesn't seem long ago when you say it, but when you count it out, 7 years wtf????? :| Where does the time go?!

Pre-ordered yesterday from Best Buy, and today just saw a tweet saying if you pre-order you get a $10 rewards certificate.

Does anybody have any experience with this? Am I eligible or do I have to cancel and pre-order again?
