Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

Thatsa BINGO!

The context of codec calls are literally "it's too expensive to animate all this script". That's it.

Bringing this up as I made a similar point back in the thread but no that's not the context. The context is it's place in the story. While there's many codec calls which can be transplanted to any location/time and are suitable for tapes I think there's a similar amount if not more which relate directly to your current character status/environment/game situation. That's not to say you're not wrong about why Kojima chose codecs as a major story telling device but they are definitely distinct than tapes and not perfect substitutes.

Pre-ordered yesterday from Best Buy, and today just saw a tweet saying if you pre-order you get a $10 gift certificate.

Does anybody have any experience with this? Am I eligible or do I have to cancel and pre-order again?
Bring your receipt in and they will likely give you that $10 gift card.

I think people have a little bit too much nostalgia these days. As a kid I could listen and be cool with 15 minute cutscenes in MGS3 as people talk on and on and on.

11 years later I can no longer stand that. I can't listen to a 10 minute codec call, it's too fucking long and it completely destroys the flow of the game. The tapes are perfect middle grounds of allowing the player to play the game and listen to side stories/interesting things that were strictly held to stopping the game, calling a random person and listening to them talk about Godzilla.

Also your comparison to popping in the codec when compared to finding a tape is pretty silly. Most of the time when you called someone you get a random conversation, only under specific situations would you get a context sensitive codec conversation.
I'l hardly call the tapes "perfect" middle ground.
I'll settle for lesser evil.

Audio-logs are such a shitty and lazy narrative tool in games, i'm still waiting for someone to implement them in a way that doesn't make me want to skip through them.

I guess Gone Home, had sort of a decent way to implement audio "recordings", but then again, that whole game was based on that.

I disagree. In combination with the LB radio call they serve all but exactly the same function.

The many silly/great moments of MGS3 cannot be reproduced through tapes because they're tied directly to your actions before you make the call. Sure you can have the exact same material in a tape but it's not the same experience as it feels detached from what you yourself just did or encountered. At the same time you can get long monologues and short stories in tapes which are probably not well suited for codecs.

The only good thing metacritic's for is for betting with fanboys on numbers.

spoiler: you almost always win by undercutting
thanks for the $20, The Order

Damn, found a website which says it's shipping this Friday and should be delivered on Saturday, however the site has some mixed reviews but still averages a 7.4 ... Should I risk it?

Getting to this part of the story takes time, and requires patience. In the lead up to the finale, you need to spend an hour or two replaying older missions on a higher difficulty setting in order to unlock the last story missions

Fuck this! I knew it.
Lack of story (like MGS1,2,3 and 4) is a real deal breaker for me :( Im so sad reading this.
Wait, and if I'm already playing on Hard, no grind for me? this is such a weird and random requirement, why???

Awesome, Peter Brown will talk about why MGSV got a 10 from Gamespot.

Edit: It will be spoiler free.

I want to hear more about the boss battles in MGSV:TPP. So far, only Yong Yea has mentioned them in some detail - he also said they are amazing.

I want to know if there are a lot of boss encounters and if they consist of both human and vehicle battles.

Anyone have any information regarding this?

You're eligible. After it comes out you'll get enough points in your rewards account to equal a $10 certificate. It takes a couple weeks though.

Guys I have a capture card and will be streaming tonight. Just got my copy. I will most likely be using a Russian based streaming site

I'll be watching this thread waiting for a link, would you start a spoiler free impressions thread? Im really looking forward to thoughts from non-reviewers

well, in ground zeroes the bullet time isn't time for the guy to radio it in, its just a little time for you to react after he notices you and take him out because the SPLIT SECOND that bullet time ends everything goes full alert

i've been hoping they would go back to mgs2-4 style (instead of mgs1) where the guard himself goes into alert, but everyone else doesn't unless the guy that saw you calls it in via his radio

It isn't an MGS1 style alert in TPP. It's more like MGS3 if anything, just on a larger scale really. Except the "room" in MGS3 works like the local base in TPP. So if they see you and shout out contact/fire the guys in that outpost know you're there. But won't get reinforcements from other outposts unless someone manages to radio in. Which you can prevent in various ways. GZ works like this as well but you only have one base, so it works like MGS1 in action.

Well I just bought it online from a webshop here in The Netherlands. They said on their site they guarantee a delivery this saturday. If that is true that would be so amazing, even tho I took 2 days off next week,it will be glorious to play it this weekend already!! Kojima's swansong should be one of the finest games ever made and I dont doubt his vision and the team's work at all.

I havent watched all footage, but I've seen most of the presentations they did on the gameplay at various tradeshows. Except for the stuff in Ground Zeroes I havent watched any recent trailers at all. I'm super psyched to play this and it shall be amazing to invade and to defend fellow GAFfers FOB'S.

Its sooo close now!!

I've been steering clear of this thread and the spoiler thread in fear of seeing or reading too many things that I would have liked to discover on my own :).

Add me on psn for some sweet FOB action : mmarsu is the psn ID.

It's not a good thing at all. It was one of the worst parts of the game. Who likes being forced to do tedious stuff like that? People who like this kind of stuff are the same folks who can spend 30+ hours on Ground Zeroes, but most people aren't like that. The game is long enough as it is without being forcefully annoying.

Seems like a lot of other people put more than 30 hours into GZ based on impressions I read on here and elsewhere. Sucks for you and the others that don't care for it, but it isn't a universal negative. People don't all play games for the same reason. I like challenging scenarios in games. Something like having to get all the stars in mario galaxy to see the real ending isn't a turn off to me because I enjoyed getting those stars and pushing the levels to their max. Even if some were the same levels just with strict conditions. It's nice when a game rewards mastery of it's systems to see everything, rather than giving it all cater to everyone regardless of their investment.

Exactly, also let's not forget you have countless of options to finish a mission. They've shown the "A Hero's Way" mission now what? 8 times? and every single playthrough was different, different buddy, different items etc.

This is one of the reasons why IGN gave it a 10, all other open world games if you start a mission you can only do it one way, in MGSV you have so many options which will keep it fresh every time.

Any impressions on the soundtrack? The soundtrack of the mgs games mean alot to me. With that I mean the original score.

This. Thank god I'm not the only one that doesn't only care for the licensed music.

Just got 100% of the trophies in Ground Zeroes... I'm officially ready for Tuesday.

Weridly I play these games mainly for the story, even had MGS4 played with popcorn lol. Good to hear the gameplay's more varied.

PSA: Ending has leaked

Watch your asses
I'm out. Ps4 subreddit getting hammered with spoilers, someone mentioned that they were spoiled by a YouTube comment, and i imagine myself getting spoiled by the recommended video section if I look up tape guide so yeahh....I'm out. If you are trying to look up a song from the game on YouTube just cover your right eye.
