Wasn't the game available in Europe as soon as it was the 1st on New Zealand?

That's what Peeler says but I'm skeptical it's going to work like that. He says the pre-order button will remain until 10AM PST but if you buy it any time between Sep 1 in NZ and 10AM PST you can supposedly start downloading and playing it. Steam generally doesn't work this way, especially with no preloads.

I just think it's crazy that pretty much none of the reviews mentioned that...

Some even said the plot was unsurprising, unconclusive...

Makes me question the integrity of many reviewers

I don't think integrity is the right word at all. Integrity is called into question when you're telling a lie.

A lot of reviewers who did this game probably played previous entries but never really got into the nitty gritty of the story. They can't (and this is an assumption) understand the ramifications of revelations like "Solid Snake fights a different guy in MG1 actually" or "Zero went into a vegetative state earlier than suspected but tried to actually HELP Big Boss" or "Big Boss is not actually illustrated to do much of anything truly evil in Phantom Pain despite his character in MG2."

I don't blame the reviewers. At the end of the day, these scores are for videogames which should primarily reflect the gameplay quality and technical build quality anyways.

Ok, just played thru the prologue (wow, really gives you the shivers...) aaaaaaand the trophies don't get synced!

What will happen on release day? Will I lose them or what?

Do we know for sure if Venom does indeed have Big Boss' memories or if he just thinks he's Big Boss?

EDIT: We do! Alright, that's much better.

But that's a reductive way to see videogames, everything play a role. Also, I prefer to think that these reviewers know quite well MGS lore.. I already don't have much admiration for our critics but to review such a key chapter in the MGS universe without the right knowledge is just not acceptable. It's like writing a review of The Avengers and don't know why Captain America can move Mjolnir, totally out of question as I see it.

Am I in denial? I'm not buying this body double garbage. Then again, there is as strong a case for it as against it. No medic plz.

Edit: Ocelot hypnotized himself into believing Bad Boss is real Boss? Fucking no way.! Pls be fake ;_;

With the text dump of the game out, yeah you're pretty much just in denial at this point

So where is the real Big Boss during the events of TPP and when does he create the Foxhound unit? Also why are the XOF soldiers and Mantis/Volgin fighting each other in the opening of the game?

Really wish they had done another making of for this game even though I understand why they didn't. Now that the saga is complete, I would really love an all inclusive look at the series. I would pay whatever they want for a commentary through DLC cassette tapes. MGS4 tried something similar with their integral podcast which was awesome at the time. Really miss Ryan Payton's touch.

official launch is untill when you can get the pre-order goodies.
the game is still going to or should unlock (or atleast get the ability to download) in NZ at midnight.

im realy hoping this doesnt mean pre-load at NZ time and unlock at 10 am PT because that would suck allot.

quote from robert

"Really bizarre that I have to keep saying this; PC OFFICIAL release time is 10 AM PT 9/1. For pre-purchase you can DL as early as 12 AM NZ"

edit: download + play NZ time https://twitter.com/haggardgolem/status/637296086516895744

Well the events of GZ did happen because of Chico's actions if you think about it. Also a 13 (14?) year old kid surviving a helicopter crash at how it was shown in GZ? Unlikely.
yeah snake said the same thing "he knew the risks joining us?" yet he was kinda forced by snake in PW if i remember right. he just grew into it.

You I know I used quotation marks for a reason right? The thing that pisses me off is that Hideo usually has more importance on characters like that... especially when the prologue was heavily centered around him... and then --- off screen death.

So was Grey Fox getting captured in MG1 not intentional after all? Venom Snake just captured Big Boss' new most trusted man out of spite?

I mean, it was basically on-screen.

I'm kinda split on this, on one hand it kind of makes the story seem more tragic, then on the other, it feels as if Kojima is a hack

I feel as well that knowing where the story goes doesnt make it bad, it all depends on the writing, and a good fall from grace plot would have been fantastic, instead, in the need to make the game less predictable, we have a plot twist to further white wash Big Boss

Where's the tragedy though? Someone we've never heard of or had any possible interaction with is turned into a body double through bullshit?

That's about as tragic as a sebaceous cyst.

It absolves Zero of guilt as well. He was not even aware of anything when the AIs even BEGAN to run things. Makes you wonder why he and the MGS3 team were even made Patriots to begin with. They dont do anything AS Patriots except Paramedic experiments on Gray Fox I guess.

That a soldier loyal to BB has his entire identity stolen from him just so BB can protect himself against Skullface and misled into believing he is someone he's not?

That's not tragic. It's contrived, convoluted and comes absolutely out of nowhere. MGS3 is tragic. This isn't. Venom Snake is a blank slate and what little scribbling there is was just taken from Big Boss. He's virtually a non-character.

How was Big Boss being protected when he was right fucking next to Venom Snake for nine years and still gets nearly killed when a death squad comes for him? It's pretty much a pointless plot. Big Boss at the end of Peace Walker knows he's on the world's shitlist and he's fully prepared to face them head on, but the slightest threat arises and he's out of there.

Body doubles seem to be a real intriguing aspect of spy fiction, especially in real-life CIA lore, if you will. I honestly don't have a problem with the story details as they are now, but I will wait to make my final judgment once I beat the game.

It is possible for it to be all of those things and also tragic, so I don't buy that argument.

It's also not going to come out of nowhere considering the events of the game itself. People have already posted all the hints you get during the game. It doesn't "come out of nowhere."

It's great that he's all "fuck the world" in Peace Walker, but Ground Zeroes showed that he was really pretty naive about that. He can say whatever he wants, but he clearly wasn't actually prepared.

But who cares about that soldier? Hes literally faceless.

You will care about him after playing the game (I presume, in theory, etc. As always, after playing I reserve the right to say "this didn't work.") There's a reason why Kojima wanted "BB" to be more of a player avatar in this game. Saying this is equivalent to saying all your experiences in Phantom Pain are meaningless.

Welp. So much for all the naysayers in this thread denying that Medic was not the Big Boss.

I should say that playing the prologue after reading the twist, it was pretty obvious we weren't playing as the Big Boss.

I just think it's funny that this confirms that the real Big Boss is the one that died like a bitch to a can of hairspray.

yeah, i guess, kinda wasnt thinking on the tragic part

This is actually why I loved the twist. It ties in remarkably well with some of the more questionable bits in the first two Metal Gear games. Sure, it undermines Guns of the Patriots a bit, but I can more than live with that.

Nonsense explanations are the same as "nowhere." Remember The Simpsons episode with Poochy? Returning to his home planet? That's what this plot is.

How was he unprepared? He handles the faux-IAEA just fine, by telling them to get lost. That's what he'd do after Peace Walker's development for him. Nothing else happens apart from that. When Mother Base gets attacked he doesn't just bounce, he jumps right in and fights.

This game butchered Big Boss by literally splitting him in two. He receives no development at all, only regression. It's not even he who orders Venom Snake's creation evidently, it was Zero. Big Boss was in a coma.

So are you saying it's perfectly believable that Venom Snake could have originally been black but ends up an exact twin of Big Boss...?

So who officially creates Outer Heaven, Big Boss or Punished "Venom" Snake? I have to say, despite all the info, I'm still a bit confused as to how Venom ends up being the Big Boss in MG1 when it appears the real Big Boss actually created Outer Heaven :-/

You care, cause that soldier is you. Haven't you got that yet?

This doesn't work, though. Especially compared to Raiden in MGS2 which was far more effective and relevant. Here it's just flat, because Venom Snake himself is flat. We players don't automatically imprint ourselves onto blank slates in gaming, and people in general have much less trouble identifying with separate people than they do with themselves.

I really believe now that Kojima wrote the game in the way he has in order to royally screw up the chances of Konami ever making another MGS game without him, and this just makes it even more obvious.

Konami will just do what every Japanese developer seems to think is a rad idea these days.

RE-BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT

I think it's pretty tragic. Actually, the medic's story is great, in my opinion, what I hate about it as a twist is that this is no longer Big Boss' downfall, I think it's a lame way to subvert expectations, Kojima just loves both Big Boss and a plot twist way too much to make a simple revenge gone too far story. M. Night Kojima indeed.

If the exact same style of story was used to, say, create the villain of MGSV, it would be pretty awesome, because the despair he faces when he realizes his entire life, memories, desires, are all a bunch of lies told to protect someone else's ass, that is some tragedy. The character seems to be well realized and justified, but it's still a dumb thing to do for the game as a whole.

Being well made doesn't make it any less stupid, just as being stupid doesn't prevent it from being tragic.
