Rumor (with a side of salt): Shovel Knight coming to Smash Wii U/3DS?

I don't get why people think SK having two amiibo released far apart is some weird concept that will never happen.

If SK is released on Monday, let's say. His Smash Amiibo isn't coming out until at least Spring 2016, based on how long the other DLC is taking to get Amiibo. That's a long time for Yacht to need to wait to add the Amiibo features they want to add to their game.

We don't even have a date for Ryu, Lucas and Roy, but it'll be early/mid Winter 2016, and they came out months ago.

To add to that, Yacht Club said they've been working on this amiibo for over a year. That would have been far before Shovel Knight got picked for Smash if he really got in through the Ballot. If he's in Smash that is totally unrelated to this amiibo.

Exactly! Retailers (who are leaking everything) probably wouldn't even know about the second amiibo yet because it would come out in like spring or some shit.

The same source for that first concept art pic also posted this:

Clearly a more dynamic pose so it was probably scrapped for budgetary reasons, but it would make a nice Smash trophy...

Nintendo most likely provided Yacht Club Games with the Smash base render to use with their concept art. Tamaki’s source probably saw the concept art and assumed the Smash base meant Shovel Knight was going to be in the game.

I don't think he'll be in Smash. I mean I haven't been following these rumours too closely, but it feels as though it's just an amiibo.
But as stated earlier, Nintendo doesn't get much money from this Amiibo since they weren't the ones who made it (for reference, Nintendo gets a majority of the profits from the Amiibos for Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, & soon Ryu, since Nintendo made all of the Smash Amiibos themselves). On top of that...

As these two pointed out, if Shovel Knight is in Smash, his Amiibo won't be released from Nintendo themselves until 2016.

I don't think Tamaki or his source would be one to jump to this kind of conclusion. It's pretty clear that the Smash base was purely for a prototype. Plus said sources told him that development on Shovel Knight was well underway, not that they just saw an image. Plus the Smash rumor overall is unrelated to the Yacht Club Games Amiibo rumor.

Tamaki's source was unrelated to the amiibo rumors.

I'd be interested in seeing an update from Tamaki now that we've seen this concept art. Maybe he could just double check that this wasn't what his source saw.

Just a misunderstand then :)

The rumors mention both an amiibo and him being playable in smash.
The rumor by Tamaki only mentioned Shovel Knight in Smash. The Amiibo was just an observation made by Tamaki based on the listing that he had no intel on at the time (likely because Nintendo didn't make the Shovel Knight Amiibo that was recently revealed).

Man, I really don't care about Snake, but I'd be hype as shit for that.

It would be really odd. Why would Nintendo directly promote a game that isn't coming to their console?

And it's not like MGS4 and Brawl, that was a few months out and was announced years before the two games had known release dates. This would be directly saying "Snake is in Smash, again, to promote MGSV." Releasing minutes before the game does...

I'll repost this here because why not
Didn't the Nintendo-Konami relationship fall apart in recent years, even before Konami went off the deep-end? It's no coincidence that the existing third party characters are from companies that Nintendo's pretty damn friendly with. Then again, Nintendo burned a lot of their third party relationships.

Are we forgetting Snake, Brawl, and MGS4?

Snake announced years before MGS4 even had a release date, using a design from MGS2 and had Brawl released during the original release date would have been almost a year away from MGS4? Plus the incredibly mild MGS4 stuff (a trophy and a song...). MSG4 was repped in Brawl just as much as 1, 2 and 3 were. Twin Snakes was repped the most, with SMI's design based from there, along with the codec portraits and Gray Fox's model and voice. Even the original Meta Gears had songs.

Versus a surprise release hours before the largest Metal Gear Game released in years.

Yea, that's not comparable in the slightest.

I'd say Sonic 2006 was more repped in Brawl than MGS4 was.

That seems like a really long time for them to put out the DLC amiibo. Mewtwo was officially released in April, and his amiibo is coming November. I'd say January at the very latest for Roy and Ryu (about 7 months), unless there's something with the license for Ryu or whatever.

If Shovel Knight IS in, it might not be til summer of next year, but that's not to say they couldn't figure out how to do it faster.

I'm not saying that Snake have a chance but just want to correct you that their relationship isn't bad as people imagined it to be.

I'm not saying that Snake is likely, but it would still allow Nintendo to make money off of hype for a game that isn't coming to their platform. And I wouldn't expect any actual MGSV advertising beyond Snake being Snake.

I think Sakurai wanted Snake in Smash 4 but shit with Konami/Kojima wouldn't allow for it at the time. Once DLC began production, it's possible that in the midst of discussing which veterans to bring back, Sakurai reached out to Konami again. Konami then decided they'd be ok with it if it allows them to promote their biggest game of the year.

I think Sakurai just wants to bring back cut characters because fans will be happy, politics of it all be damned. I also don't think Nintendo would care that much as long as they aren't literally required to put "BUY MGSV TODAY" in the reveal video. New game or not, they know people will buy Snake, more so than a lot of newcomers.

So yeah, not expecting anything Monday, but the timing is curious.

I'm trying to figure out why the 3DS patch is an hour after the Wii U patch.

This hasn't ever happened since before the two versions were in sync.

My only thought is to reduce the eShop load, but only an hour hardly seems like enough time, and in the past the 3DS version usually came 20 minutes or so later anyway, and the servers still died.

What's with the patch assumption? Smash Bros. server maintenance is routine. The servers were recently down on July 2, July 13, and August 5 without any corresponding patches.

During prime time in NA? This is the exact same hours the last DLC launched. As far as I know, other maintenance happens in the middle of the night in NA and the middle of the day in Japan. Low key times that don't really interrupt anyone.

After MGSV releases, Snake in Smash would likely be the most Konami would be willing to use the character, the way things are going. Kind of like how freely Capcom gave over Mega Man.

"Sure, whatever, not like we're using it."

I feel terrible for the people who really believe Snake is coming on Monday.

I mean, they're doing it to themselves, but I'm not heartless.

I don't see Snake returning to Smash ever again. What I do see happening is a character ending up having Snake's old moveset in some respects. His moveset is still pretty unique and it would be a waste to leave it out.

I sorta hope it's someone who nobody expects personally. Shovel Knight would be awesome. But I want a real surprise this time XD.

I would welcome Snake back with open arms, if only to have the MGS stage back and this gorgeous music. That said, I don't think he is returning...

I feel like a Resident Evil character could have his move set with some tweaks.

For some reason, a Resident Evil character without a gun would be much more jarring than Snake without a gun. It's probably because Marvel vs. Capcom 3 already has a perfect representation of Chris Redfield, and I don't think Sakurai would want to include a butchered version of a character that is better represented in another fighting game. I love the Smash Bros. versions of Mega Man and Ryu, so an unfaithful Chris would be upsetting.

If there was a RE rep in Smash, I think it'd be Jill instead of Chris.
I was more thinking of something more...colourful. like the Inkling, though the recovery would probably be different.
Inklings have potential for such an unique moveset, being a Snake clone of sorts would be... underwhelming, to say the least.

Why wouldn't it be Leon?

RE4 is famous and considered one of the best games in the series and was a GCN exclusive for years, plus it got a successful and critically acclaimed Wii port.

When I think of Nintendo + Resident Evil, Leon is who comes to mind.

That is also very true.
There's a popular theory that Sami (Advance Wars) could inherit Snake's moveset, but that wouldn't be a faithful representation of her series either.
Chris starred in more mainline Resident Evil games. I see him as the face of the series, but that might just be me. Chris, Jill, and Leon are all popular.
I kinda see Jill as the face of the series, maybe because most RE games I played had her as the main character (or one of the main characters) and also because she was the first RE character to be featured in a crossover, I think. I can visualize Jill in Smash, but I have trouble visualizing Chris. Though this is just my personal view on "the face of RE".

I think it would be weird to represent a third-party series with a character who didn't exist until the second installment. Chris is a more constant force through the series, and the GCN remake of Resident Evil was a critical and commercial success. Umbrella Chronicles and Revelations also did well. Resident Evil as a whole is probably a more important consideration than "Nintendo + Resident Evil." Snake and Pac-Man have designs mostly inspired by non-Nintendo games, and they're hardly Nintendo icons themselves. Heihachi was considered for Smash Bros., but only two Tekken games have been ported to Nintendo hardware. I don't know if being super important to Nintendo is a requirement for guest characters.

I mean

if Resi ever got into Smash, there's literally no way it wouldn't be Jill playable

It's definitely debatable. They're both important. Chris was the primary protagonist of the first game, listed before Jill on the official site and manual (and he's on the cover art), and he was more recently the star of RE5 and RE6. Jill's last mainline starring role was in 1999 with RE3. I just feel like Chris is best representative of the entire series.

We're all assuming there will be something the coming few days. But there's nothing that really confirms their will be something right? There has been smash maintenances before without the game being patched/dlc no?

Not at that time, no. But yeah, the retailers said we might not see SK until November.
