Street Fighter V Roster Discussion: P-P-P-P-PATTERN BREAKER

I'm going with Juri being DLC. The fact that Rainbow Mika was revealed & the allusion towards an Illuminati rep via the Charlie comic (both of which are things that Siliconera called), I doubt that we'll get anyone from SF4 in the base roster.

You could apply that logic to Rainbow Mika, an Alpha character who didn't make the cut for SF4.
At the same time, we got R. Mika, who is connected to...nothing.

Who knows what Juri is up to after SFIV. Maybe she works for the Illuminati now. Who knows who the new characters work for.

Then what about Karin?

Karin was the #1 character on Capcom's Japanese poll and the #7 character overall. ChocoBlanka also interviewed Justin, Ricki, K-Brad, and PR Balrog at E3 about which character they wanted to see in SFV, and every single one of them said Karin. She also mentioned that Mago wants her in as well. She's extremely popular and will likely get an even bigger reaction to her reveal than Mika has.

If/When Karin is revealed at TGS the crowd will lose their shit. Karin has been Japan's most requested character for years now. Capcom would be morons if they didn't announce her there.

Agreed. Karin at TGS is a foregone conclusion, & would solidify the Siliconera leak (since, again, the implication of an Illuminati rep is strong thanks to the Charlie comic).

Seems really weird that there probably won't be a boxer in the core roster. It's shaping up to be easily one of the most eclectic rosters for a SF game.

I wonder if they'll have a pro player exhibition at TGS like they did at E3. I know there's actually going to be a pretty important SF4 event going on, ha Capcom announced anything for SFV? Would be nice to see some top players play the last 6 or so characters announced since E3.

I feel like we'll at least get either Balrog or Dudley as DLC (maybe both).

Well that isn't inconsistent with anything that I'm saying. You put characters on the main roster because individually they wouldn't sell. That's not indicative of popularity. example: Birdie

That being said, I don't like a lot of the sf4 characters but thinking they're low on the food chain, as the characters who represent the game that revived this entire genre, is wrong. Especially pitted against the characters who come from the game that many think define the death of this franchise.

No way they're going to make Laura a boxer. Brazil has much more prominent martial arts.

I agree with this but at the same time I think the larger problem I have with this roster is that Capcom seems reluctant to include any characters with a recognizable real word fighting style.

if they put both Karin and Mika in over juri ill be really disappointed, it feels like they will put fluff characters in the base game because they know everyone will buy SF5 no matter what but save popular characters for DLC since they will sell better

Judging by the color groupings, Karin and Juri aren't competing with one another. If you're upset if Juri isn't in, blame Vega.

Fluff?

do you mean like an accurate portrayal?

Well no, because that has never been the case besides some normal moves. I simply mean characters whose movesets are inspired by distinct martial arts. There are plenty of examples from past street fighters of this type of character. Aside from Ryu, Ken and Chun Li none of the characters seem to be trained martial artists, but even these characters have always been the loosest representations of any specific style.

characters less likely to sell as DLC, with the new DLC model they want to make sure people keep spending on the game into the future ... who would sell better Sagat or Karin?

Karin? Karin has polled extremely high in any character pill especially in Japan as pointed out like a million times in this thread. Mika is a very personal choice for Ono. Gtfo

You actually think fan favourites that haven't been in a game in 17 years would sell less than someone who has been featured constantly? Popular female characters, nonetheless?

lmao i say something honest and people freak out ..... wait you mean they want to make MONEY from a video game?!! their not doing it for the LOVE?!

people always jump all over examples in this thread and try to punch holes in the theory but the idea is still solid, they will make sure DLC characters going into the future are in high demand and the core of the game they can put in whoever they want because you will buy the game anyway

The main reason I'll be sad if Juri doesn't make it as a base character is that right now it feels as though we have a rep from every other major SF title, and it'd be a shame for the 4 series to not be represented.

We've got Ryu/Ken from SF1, Cammy/Chun/Bison/Vega from 2, presumably Alex and/or Urien from 3, Nash from Alpha, Birdie from Alpha 2 (though he appeared in SF1, this was his first playable appearance), Mika from Alpha 3 -- it'd be strange, and in a weird way something of a slap in the face, if SF4, which revived the series, isn't represented at all in the base roster.

That said, there's been a lot of rumour smoke around Juri, which usually means there's some fire; so maybe she'll be the first day-one pre-order bonus DLC character or whatever. One of the older rumours pegged that slot for Vega, after all, the pre-order bonus bit, so maybe that was true somewhere along the line and things got switched up.

What is that even supposed to mean? Saying your honest opinion does not make it the absolute truth, specially with stuff proving otherwise.

I'm still not sure what you mean. Where do Dudley, Abel and Juri fit into this. They aren't realistic but they aren't characters like Necro or Rose.

Also if this is your interest, try Tekken....although they seem to be straying away from having characters like this.

But that contradicts with your knowledge about the character popularities. If they want to make the most out of the DLC, they should pick the really popular characters right? Well then Karin should be a DLC character since she's immensely popular (as stated before). So she ain't fluff at all.

To be fair, apart from Ryu and Ken, no one in SF3:NG was from 2. No one from 3 was in the vanilla version of SF4. It's become somewhat of a tradition that (apart from Ryu and Ken) the characters introduced in the previous title don't appear in the base version of the next game. SFV is, seemingly, no exception.

karin is popular? i didn't know that maybe in some poll capcom put out like who would you want to see in the future

look there is no more forced upgrades you don't need to buy super SF5 ect so they will focus on people that will sell and not waste time on the ones who wont that was my only point

I get your point, it's a logical marketing & sales way of thinking.
And yeah she's really popular, especially in Japan. Even people like JWong, K-Brad, Ricki Ortiz and etc. named her as a character they really want in the game (I know they don't speak for the whole FGC, but they're renowned players; must stand for something lol).

Art has been begging Ono to put Karin in SF for years lol.

She's popular like how Mortal Kombat fans wanted Rain as DLC but Freddy Kruger was the character that sold the most.

The reality is, is that more people played SF4 than alpha 3 and the people who did play alpha 3 are outnumbered by the 09ers.

I hope

Oh right, the 09'ers. Forgot all about them.

Pretty much

Like I like alex, but no one played sf3. I don't believe any poll with him on top means anything.

It's easy to when some of them know of Karin only from wikipedia searches and become part of that camp due to falling in love with her concept rather than liking her based on genuine nostalgic memories.

That doesn't really bother me much, I'm more annoyed by the people who DON'T want her in because they're under the impression that she is comparable with a typical rekka character while they don't even know how she plays and what her moveset is. They just read but have never played her before and then bitch about people wanting to have her.

the vocal minority will always be overwhelmed by the majority, when dudebro69 boots up his ps4 and sees 'Freddy Kruger' as DLC guess who hes going to buy, for every one hardcore alpha fan theres 50 dudebros and those guys are not the ones voting in online polls ether

so far all of the alpha characters have been totally revamped i doubt she will play anything like she did back in alpha

I know nothing about Birdie because I have never played him, but doesn't he appear to have the same moves as his Alpha iteration? At least the specials do.

yeah they each have one or two moves that are the same but ive watched combo demo them all and in the last video for mika he said "her only returning move"

Some similar moves, but he plays very differently. He's basically a whole new character. Ideally, any returning character would get the same treatment: recognizable moves but you have to put in work to learn the character again.
