Street Fighter V Roster Discussion: P-P-P-P-PATTERN BREAKER

Well I accidently posted this in the R.Mika thread, but anyway what character would make you want to purchase SFV? I heard a lot of people saying "add X character and I'll be there day 1." I am still buying SFV, but Guy, Urien, or Yun would make me want to buy it more...

Just about anyone Capcom would let progress into a new stage of development. Gym Teacher Sakura, Professional Karin, Gentleman in a Suit Blanka... whatever. Any character can be made interesting with a bit of development.

I'd enjoy Elena and Makoto and Rose returning, and... Dhalsim and Dan, but I'm actually quite interested to see how the new characters turn out. I hope they continue to fill in some gaps in character design and archetype. We've never had an older female in a SF game before, for example...

For anyone complaining about SF5 going for less popular characters or whining "where are my SF2 characters and Dan and Sakura", if you ever complained about the SF3 cast in the past, calling them "ugly", "weird", "un-SF" or claimed the SF2 cast was the "core" of the franchise, then you have nobody but yourself to blame. SF4 was the series that catered to you, because Capcom were deathly afraid of not capturing as wide an audience as possible by excluding fan favorites.

...Just because you put something in quotation marks doesn't make it not true.

Secondly, trying to frame SFV as some sort of comeuppance to people who, apparently, did not give SFIII the love and affection it deserved, is absurd.

I'll buy the game if Karin is in. If not I'll wait until she's added or pass on it.

Adon would be nice too, but I can wait on him as he was in most versions of 4.

I want Older Sakura. I originally wanted Sakura + Mika + Karin. But it seems we may get Mika and Karin in the main line up and not the biggest one i wanted. Hopefully she is soon after DLC wise

Since when Elena is considered a "weirdo?"

She's freakishly tall, an African Native who loves Asian culture and wants to be an exchange student, and is always happy. That's... quite enough to be considered weird.

Heck, when I was in middle school, I was considered weird for being a big black guy who liked Japanese cartoons, didn't want to play football or basketball, and cared about computers... it's really not that hard! ;)

Heh. That sounds like me...except it persisted until later in high school.

Oh come on. Oro looks like a freak.

Remy looks like an emo punk.

Urien and Elena, I agree with you.

To be fair most SF characters are freaks, even SF2 cast, people are just used to them since they grew up with them and were kids when they discovered them.
Sumo doing torpedo headbut, Indian guy with elestic limbs, green electric dude etc.
If Guile were to be revealed nowadays there would be riots in the street just because of how stupid his haircut is.

We can look back and smile about it now! Was quite annoying at the time...

Thankfully, in high school, most of this was starting to become appreciated, lol. People kinda knew what anime was, everyone needed to use PCs because Internet and stuff was becoming more awesome and integrated, and even old enemies started to become friendly.

Somehow this makes me want to see an Elena OVA now, haha. As quirky as she is, she MUST face some unusual discrimination from people. It'd be nice to see how she keeps such a positive view amidst all that.

If they actually let her progress in V, I wonder what they'd do. Would she change any after getting to spend time with a different culture in person?

Guy for sure. I feel like he doesn't have much of a chance making it in this game at any point though...

Moves don't make you a "freak", the general look does. Dhalsim was cool even when I was a kid. "Woah, look at this guy's limbs!" You only become a freak when you are weird and don't pull it off with style. The problem with the SFIII cast is many of them look weird, and are really lame. Necro, Twelve, and Oro are the worst of the bunch. Very few people think these guys are cool.

Guile is pure fucking American, then, now, and forever. A thousand years from now, archaeologists will use Guile to understand the past as it actually was.

Oro has a spirit bomb. Epitome of not lame

Yeah, it kinda got on my nerves around that period. At least that part of my story ended...

As for Elena and the source of her adorable quirkiness, I don't think they're delve too much on what makes her tick. Of course, SFV is supposed to be a more concentrated effort in the story department, so who knows?

People keep saying this but SF2 characters are loud stereotypes that many can identify without being interested in street fighter. The sf3 characters aren't like that, which is why they didn't catch on as well. And the SF3 cast is old too. I don't think saying "you grew up with them" works.

People so in love with how stylized sfiii was are really missing this idea. The idea being, the difference between your favorite design and memorable design.-

Q
Necro
Oro
Urien
Twelve

I use/like Remy lots tho.

These are the only "weirdos". If guys like Hugo counts as a weirdo then so does Zangief.

I have no idea how you came to that conclusion. If that's the impression you got then you completely misconstrued my post.

Hope the next chapters have been better!

I never expect Capcom to really work on the story quirks like that, but it'd be cool to see such stuff make it in the west. I guess there's been a lot more Manga released than we've seen.

Everyone wants MK-style story modes, but I actually wouldn't mind seeing something a bit more personal with these much more interesting-as-individuals characters. I'd be willing to pay more for characters if part of that was to include Individualized World Tour X Graphic Novel style stories.
He looks like a raisin.

ARE YOU TELLING ME THIS ISN'T COOL?! ;)

So what's the argument for SNK designs?

It's a shame, I was holding out for Crimson Viper & Mike Haggar, but I guess neither of them are making the base roster. I'd gladly take Alex & Urien as consolation prizes.

What type of character is Karin, anyway? I've never played an Alpha game.

Also, Mika's upper back, like under her arms freaks me the hell out.

So what's the argument for SNK designs?

That we're not playing KOF 14?
That King of Fighters wasn't in Wreck it Ralph?
That Kof13 turned everyone back to their original designs for a reason?
That the KOF character that people remember the most is Terry, who is dressed like a truck driver? And that despite the hardcore raving about Terry's garou design, that's not what SNK themselves uses anymore?

Too easy.

I agree with you but Hugo is definitely a lot weirder than Zangief. The way he looks and moves in III is so bizarre. He looks kind of like a giant zombie.

I love how he jiggles after recovering from an attack and moves back to his neutral state.

Not to turn this into a SFIII defense speech, but personally, as someone who came into SFIII quite late (and on console, not arcades), I always found these guys to be very cool because of their weirdness actually, which I'd call uniqueness instead. They balance out the more traditional looking martial artists like Makoto, Ryu etc nicely by being more out there with their (to me, still sufficiently grounded in SF terms) moves and personalities. In the larger pantheon of SF, I'd argue that they aren't any weirder than many of the characters that we're simply more used to seeing, like Blanka, Dhalsim or even Birdie. Less well known or even obscure is not the same as uncool or weird imo.

To me SFIII remains a very powerful game because of how much of interesting and pleasing total package it is in terms of sprite animation, music and sound, character designs and stage designs. Like it or not, it has its own look and feel and in large part this is due to its roster, which is not something I'd argue you could say about SFIV with its generic music and thrown together pile of popular characters from different games. Hopefully SFV will avoid that KOF style Dream match trap and follow a bit more in III's footsteps in terms of carving out its own unique identity and feel. So far it seems they might be going for too many SFII characters again unfortunately, redesigned or not.

So...fast normals but not much in terms of combo finishers?

She had a lot of combo finishers actually. Almost her whole special moveset was available as rekka adjustments, but each of them were able to also be done outside of the rekka starter move and all of them were viable within combos, sans for the counter, to which could be a combo starter I believe for supers.

As someone else mentioned earlier, for any character from the alpha series, she probably needs the least amount of changes/additions to make her work well within V. Just give her a decent V-attack (hell, could just be the counter possibly) and step up her super for a new critical art and perhaps a Target Combo or 2 and she good. Hell, due to her specials and rekka variations, she might not really even need a target combo. She had a great normal overhead as well and one of her specials also hit overhead. I'd be very curious as to what they'd give her for a V-trigger tho.

Booo Cammy's face looks boring now. Bison looks even more boss. I really like the direction they are going with the costumes.

Also 3S roster is a lot more memorable to me then SF2 and i started off with Championship edition. people are underestimating the appeal of the roster.

I started of with the OG SF2 (shit, hell I even played SF1 or Fighting Street as it was also known as) prior to that and yeah, I agree, I think by time of III's third strike, I liked their cast just a bit moreso overall than Super SF2's cast, albeit, I wasn't a fan of a couple of the "weirdo" characters either, namely Twelve really (Necro was also weird, but I liked him more than Blanka for sure), lol! It's one thing if your whole fighting game is replete of strange/weird cast (a la Skullgirls or Darkstalkers, loved both games), but I don't like weirdo/monster characters in any fighting games TBH and I really wish to have a solid fighter without them if the bulk of the cast is going to be more humanoid than anything.

LMAO/SMH @ someone considering Elena weirdo earlier tho. She's just slightly abnormally tall for a woman, but otherwise, not weird in design at all and is sexy as fuck.

You mean the idea being: the difference between being in 13 or so games and being in 1. Because that's really what it's about. Sakura wasn't a world warrior, but she's "memorable" and she's been in a ton of games compared to the SF3 newcomers.

It's as simple as that. That's how memory works.

Hnnnnnggggggggggg

EDIT:

SF is taking notes from DOA confirmed
Can't blame them, DOA seems to make a lot of money out of DLC since they don't stop releasing new costumes even after all this time. I'm part of the problem when it comes to buying DOA DLC costumes but I really needed those Nyotengu and Rachel costumes to play better... really........ god, how much money have I wasted! T_T
