Anyone know if the stuff you collect to mother base stays when you die and go back to a checkpoint? I know the marked enemies stay marked so I'm hoping I don't have to go back and re-collect everything.

Not entirely sure, but every time I restart the checkpoint the stuff I collected needs to be collected again. I dunno if that means it didn't count or it's gonna count twice.

It depends.

If you collect/fulton and make it to an area's soft boundary and get the "extraction complete" voice clips with the text on the lower left screen, then you're good. If you fulton then immediately die, nope.

Kaz needs to keep his mouth shut about Black Carrots while I'm listening to tapes.

This is something that annoys me about the game. When I have a tape playing and then someone decides to chime in on the radio, it doesn't pause the tape. The tapes are good though.

Everyone is directed awfully in this.

Kiefer doesn't seem to know the context in which he's talking, most of the time.

Troy Baker doesn't seem to know what Ocelot's voice is supposed to be.

Robin A. Downes seems to have recorded lines as two different Kaz's. "Good job, Boss!" vs. "The pain ... won't stop hurting".

James Horan was clearly thrown under a bus, direction-wise.

A couple of the other characters are goofy also.

Jay Tavare is the only actor who puts in a consistently solid performance. I guess Quiet is consistent too, though, lol.
I thought Jay Tavare was awful too. Robin Atkin Downes put in the best performance IMO

Guys I made it online!!

Login bonus:

9/1 Bio mats x 5000
9/2 MB coins x 15
9/3 Digitalis x16
9/4 Common Metals x 5000
9/5 MB coins x 35
9/6 MB coins x 30
9/7 1000000 GMP
9/8 Bio mats x 5000
So confused. Did Peeler literally not just tweet yesterday that you could only get coins with real money?

OK I was at MB just messing around, I developed a Box, tried to have fun with it, suddenly I realize I have a limited amount of boxes and that I used them all, how can I develop another 5?

I don't want to go to my mission without the Box :(

I am replaying MGS and planning to play the rest of the series before touching Phantom Pain, and the elevator scene is driving me crazy. It's the first time where I seriously want to break the controller.

I've been at it for hours and I know I'll get it on the first try tomorrow.

Just watched the GB Quicklook. Maybe it's just that mission or something, but the world seemed really bland and empty. Is it like that for every mission?

To those looking to get a Steel book off of eBay without getting played like a damn fiddle, this is what my legit UK copy looks like:

You can just about make it out in the bottom right of the inside case, there's the Steelbook logo and copyright.

There's also some reference numbers on the inside of the spine.

Damn, nice! Exactly the answer I was looking for.

Had a feeling the ones on ebay with UPCs are bootlegs. Most won't care, but if you're going to dish out extra cash for the case to begin with, might as well be legit.

What about the spine? Is there a Kojipro logo on bottom like early pics had?

This is steadily becoming game of all time material, and has already entered my favorites.

Was marathoning from midnight after staying awake for 36 hours had class for the past few hours, and still want to play this game even though I am dead tired.

This game just "clicks" so well and I haven''t even gotten to all the mechanics yet.

I loved the intro. Definitely one of my favorites moments in a videogame ever.
--
Haven't enjoyed a game this much in quite a long time.

That's the one thing that annoys the heck out of me, the useless tips overpowering the tapes I'm trying to listen to

This and the complete uselessness of using the L1 intel/radio function either during binocs or out for a general call are really disappointing. You get maybe 5 canned things usually offering little to no information or help outside the initial tutorial or outpost. L1 when looking at a soviet soldier "That's a soviet soldier." L1 while looking at an elite soviet soldier or one of the radio men walking from outpost to outpost "That's a soviet soldier." L1 while infiltrating a new area or outpost "Goats live around here."

Why does Kojima use the Midge Ure version of The Man Who Sold the World? According to Wikipedia that was released as a bonus track on a re-release of Ure' The Gift in 1996 and wasn't part of the original 1985 album, whereas the game takes place in the 80s.

Just seems weird since Kojima is really good about details.

Looks like you got yourself a real Diamond Dog.

you-win-o.gif

The game keeps crashing (on PS4) when the doctor in the hospital asks for my name. Right at the part where you start entering it.

That and my download which I started almost 24hrs ago still isn't done ffs.

Should i just wait for the game to be complete before trying again?

The checkpoint save system is pretty brutal. You're almost always brought back to the beginning of the area losing everything. Its nothing like Ground Zeroes, a very drastic change. I was doing side ops at mother base of all places. I completed one, you'd think it would save right? Nope. I was fucking around motherbase afterwards and fell to my death. Lost all progress, had to do the target practice sideop again. Is it the same in the field? Like if you're free roaming Afghanistan, complete a sideop then die 30 minutes later do you lose all progress?

Man the satisfying nature of this game didn't become readily apparent to me until I tackled Mission 5
(the one where you have to take out the enemy communication towers).

Getting adjusted to the controls I managed to sneak around the entire settlement and plant C4. Move stealthily through everyone, get behind the cliffside, and BOOM. So fucking good. I love the stealth sabotage possibilities.

It's far creepier and goes with the intro more than the Bowie version would. He absolutely knows the year of release of all the songs... That and Midge Ure released the song in 85...

I have to say, I'm really enjoying the story of this... even though it is mostly done via cassette.

As for voice acting, they're all passable, but sometimes there's just a lack of direction or they nail it completely.

Got it, thanks. That stinks. Gotta be more careful.

It was originally released in 1982.

Running around the desert with my dog, obtaining resources, I literally feel like I'm living out a Mad Max fantasy.

ofc I have Mad Max the game sitting on my shelf until I'm done with MGS5 but this game captures the feeling every now and then.

Ocelot has had like 9 different voices over the course of the series.

Fairly minor optional spoiler about Mother Base

Wow, I just found the thing people were talking about being hidden on Mother Base.

Holy shit.

The bigger spoiler part:

Paz's death retconned. Wtf. Did not expect that. Maybe she's still a clone, like I thought pre-release?

I'm not sure how I feel about Snake misremembering her death – but I think they handled Paz's PTSD after camp omega really fucking well. Dissociative personality disorder and stuff. Excellently done. Kaz and Ocelot seem genuinely remorseful. Excellent.

There is another mission like this later, where you have
to blow up something huge. I already carved my path and made my escape before detonating, and heard and saw the explosion from afar (like 400m away) which made it all the more epic.

Can you PM me how to get to this?

Does if anyone know if there's a mandatory day one patch? My internet has been on the fritz and Comcast isn't coming until Friday. I suppose I could just play it completely offline until they fix it though, regardless.

Those of you who have finished or done a lot, is completion percentage more tied to mission completion this time? I mean in GZ I completed all of the missions, but haven't gotten most of the collectables, only gotten a few POW's and my completion % is about 20-25%. I mean it's great that some of you have 8% completion after 12 hours, and it sounds like it's going to be a real lengthy, meaty game, but if the majority of the completion % is tied to non-mission stuff I probably won't come close to 100% it.

Mine doesn't come in until tomorrow, which is good, because I'm swamped with the first week of teaching right now.

3 day weekends all month though...

The intro thing might just be me, I'll admit. It's impressive in a showy "WOW, LOOKATDIS INTRO BANG BOOM" sort of way, but every "cinematic" game has been trying to do that for like 7-8 years now and I'm just kinda over it, y'know? I respect the work that goes into it, but that's as far as my praise can go.

As for the rest.....well, like I said, I'm super early. My only takeaway so far is that the mechanics and dynamic between the player and AI are A+, fantastic, incredible. The rest is so different from what I loved about MGS that I really don't know where I'll stand with this game after I put a decent chunk of time into it.

Only got to play about 3 hours earlier

These kinds of intros don't impress me anymore, sadly. I was ready for it to just leave me alone after about 20 minutes. It really starts coming together when you're dropped into the open world with these marvelous mechanics, but I can't shake this feeling of "It ain't your father's MGS anymore." I wonder how I'll feel about it at 20 hours. At 40 hours.

I'll go one step further and say I actively hated the prologue. It was like those times where you have to slowly follow an NPC in Call of Duty, but stretched to a hour. The game is constantly taking control away from you every 1-2 minutes. Its SO self-indulgent and melodramatic, the patients getting killed in the most showy way possible(I laughed quite a bit at the guy who puts his face up the curtain, as if posing for a camera). So overdone, with the near-constant shaky cam, the light distortions, DoF, and the slow-mo! So! Much! Slow-mo! You never feel in any kind of danger, it just goes on and on and on. There's no tension, so you just sit there and wait for it finally come to an end, waiting for all the predictable "dramatic" reveals and last-minute saves with the Ambulance crashing into not-Volgin. One of the worst opening hours of a video game I've played in ages.

Luckily the next two hours I spent sneaking into outposts, knocking out guards, hiding them in dumpsters, stealing their 80s pop music and resources, planning my entrance from on high, escaping on horseback and the game was dope. If that's the bulk of the game, I think we'll be alright.

Honestly I think, while the term "open-world" for this game is correct, it causes a connotation that links it to stuff like GTA.

I think it'd be better to refer to MGSV as a "sandbox" stealth game, as it isn't about the GTA or Assassin's Creed style of filling a world with a billion things to do, but about giving you a few things to do, and giving you total freedom and control as to how you pursue them.

While there aren't a ton of things to see and do in the open world like in an Assassin's Creed game, the level-design of the world and the bases is absolutely stellar, some of the best I've seen in a game.

So no, I don't think it's bland or empty, but it's going for a different thing than other open-world games.

......... If I see Kojima's name across the screen, one more time...........

The constant credits are definitely weird.

About four hours in and I'm loving it, despite not being a huge fan of Big Boss. All his (extremely limited) dialogue is generic action hero one liner shit. It's the worst, but everything else is good enough to overcome that.
