"If x thing is good in an mgs game, it is Kojima's fault."

"If x thing is bad in an mgs game, it is Konami's fault."

Unless it is specifically related to publishing, thats not how it works. We have to appreciate the tons and tons of work that go into making a game like MGSV but it must also be recognized that deadlines exist for a reason and failure to meet them is on the shoulders of the devs. 3 years is not outrageously short dev time. Its not a Fallout New Vegas Obsidian type situation.
You hit the nail on the head. That is what everyone's going to say but that isn't how it works, unless Konami have taken the story stuff out and are going to sell it back to us, the blame sits squarely on the shoulders of Kojima and KojiPro.

They didn't have a 3 years did they? I thought it was known they'd been working on it since 2009-2010? Even so there should have been a lot more content in the main missions, their Fox Engine is incredibly efficient and is designed for quick and easy development.
Whats up with the pic of New York City at the end of the game? And is that the reason why people think there is going to be some sort of Sept. 11th patch? Now that we know the MSX tapes dont do anything and there is no going back to Camp Omega ive seen people guess that something is being added on 9/11 but I cant find any kind of information to back this up. I do know that MGO will be up in October, but I believe that is all the extra content we will be getting.
It's not just the pic of New York, there's been a website that someone found (http://www.ingsoc.org) that said "Kojima Lives" and the date 9/11 on a splash page. Everyone thought it was a hoax or a fan page but every now and then it was updated with pics like twins in a womb. Stuff related to MGS.

Recently it was updated so the splash page is revealing a new game called BloodHound. What's more Kojima included a special skin for DD called BloodHound.

With that website as well as Kojima showing New York and Liquid saying "It's not over yet" people are starting to think there will be a 9/11 patch.

Edit: Interesting to note: Konami announced their restructuring on March 3rd. Running "ingsoc.org" through Whois.net doesn't reveal much, but does show the date of the site's creation: March 1st.

Feels like this needed at least another 6 months of development time.

Gameplay is rock solid (10/10) but everything else just feels like it was slapped together.
Yeah, the gameplay is fucking amazing but the story just doesn't feel "there" if you know what I mean.

The way that line was delivered, Venom is very much doing a dic thing. He wouldn't pull the trigger on liquid instead leaving him to die in the napalm, while giving him the option to kill himself if he wanted to. The weird way he says "blame me" feels like Venom already knows he's not BB and is ruining BB's image systematically.. Sort of a - "hunt me down, if you want to kill me."

It helped the story on so many levels... how the fuck did the crucial ending of the game get cut!?

No. He screamed to hell thinking he had killed him. He gives him the gun to give him the choice to kill him if he wants, he doesn't, and because he respects him as a soldeir.

No idea how you can see it as a dick thing after what happens before really.

The Quiet "boss fight" if you can call it that, was me sitting in one spot and dropping two supply drops on her head.

Hm.

I'm wondering if the Camp Ortega stuff will be included in this so called patch. Next Friday will be interesting for sure.

Seems like total bullshit to me. The site has something about an unannounced nintendo console on there. Why would anything related to a Phantom Pain patch that comes out in a week need something like that there?

So, throwing out "To Be Continued..." and putting me back in the ACC between crucial story points makes sense but I'm not allowed to have Quiet in the Endgame to help clear up missions because she 'went away'.

.

Yeah, so childish. Can't believe journalists are also joining in.

Kojima has a reputation for missing deadlines and being very expensive. At the end of the day, video games are not free to make. Get a grip. You don't watch deleted or unfinished scenes from films and think "Jesus Fucking Christ, Universal Studios you bastards."

The big red flag to the while theory yeah. Wish Kojima would come out and address some of these concerns about the game.

fuckin spoiler in topic title i didnt know thanos was in this whats next snakes replacement arm is the infinity gauntlet???

What a crazy ride this is, can't wait to play it :lol

Well, honestly the whole reflection thing where he's depicted in his demonic bloody form says otherwise... the fact that he refused to do a mercy killing when they were about to sweep the area with napalm is a pretty good indicator of a dick thing... "here do it yourself" and the whole "blame me" is kind of indicative that Venom knows the truth about who he really is at this point... it makes sense to me. Sure he seemed upset right after having shot Eli, but he obviously wasn't going to bring him back onto the chopper - instead leaving him to die. I mean the whole scene where Venom shoots him and screams, might have just been him still trying to stay compassionate about Eli --- while afterwards, he realizes how much hate Eli has for BB, so he just decides to keep that evil personification... it helps solidify a lot of the dangly bits, of course it still leaves a shit ton of questions unanswered and a hell of a lot of retcons... it still feels more complete in tone that the ending we're given.

I refused to do that. I had to do this in a legit way... took me 4 hours. I didn't die, I just had to be that meticulous... I loved it... not quite as good as the end, but up there.

I always interpreted the big horn and blood as a manifestation of his guilt more than anything. Though that doesn't neccessarily hinder him from accepting that side of him as who he is.

There's no way the finger can be pointed solely at Konami (or Kojima) in this situation. It's clearly very, very messy. This seems more like the perfect storm of Kojima going over-budget (and perhaps pushing things too far story-wise; who knows) and Konami clashing with him over scheduling.

But like, seriously, chapter 2 is redoing story missions. Most of them. That's unacceptable no matter how good the core gameplay of V is, and it screams "development hell" to me. I'm honestly stunned Kojima (or whoever made the decision) thought repeated missions were better than just leaving the game at having 30something main levels.

Any explanation of the random bars that show up during cutscenes?

Kojima just likes the look of it. He saw it in a music video.

Someone got jumped on for making the Destiny comparison in the OT but I can see where they are coming from. I would have preferred the first 30 missions actually had loads of story peppered throughout instead of a back ended chapter 30-31 and then a chapter 2 with nothing to do but grind/repeat missions. My eyes nearly rolled out my skull when I realized the new missions are just repeats.

I'm about to do the Sahelanthropus mission. Is this any kind of point of no return? How do I unlock the mission where I recover Volgin's body? Is that now gone since he got squashed by Metal Gear?

edit: I'm also missing the Strangelove side-op. What have I missed??

The whole Eli/Venom Snake situation makes Liquid in MGS1 so kooky now.

So either Liquid was lying or completely misremembering the situation about daddy saying he was inferior (when in reality it was actually a FAKE Big Boss being NICE to him), or the real Big Boss eventually met young Eli shortly afterwards (one hell of an awkward "reunion": "what happened to your horn and robot arm?' "oh... that wasn't really me, sorry") and then acted like a dick to him for real.

I feel like the story and plot of all the other MGS games were crystal clear compared to this one. I still don't get Skullface's motivations at all... Worst Metal Gear villain by far. Great VA performance, though.

Also I think I would have been happier if the parasites were just nanomachines.

Skullface was literally the Liquid to Big Boss' Solid Snake. "Baww i'm always in ur shadow and i dont get glory i hate you and ima fuck you up"

Am I the only one who just used a sniper and shot her? Once you get her health down all the way the fight is over. She doesn't die or anything.

Really weak and belittled the player. "I made sure you always succeeded in your mission" - Oh gee, great thanks. There's me thinking I played Snake Eater and there wasn't just a ghost helping me.

Good VA though, yeah.

I'm wondering that too, I'll be a very happy man if we get more story stuff on Friday! With all the twin hints on that websites Twitter I'm thinking it could be about MG1, we've seen Liquids story in TTP so maybe it's now time to see Solids finally come full circle? I dunno.

True but it's up to the Dev team to hit deadlines, in Uni if we don't hit deadlines we are fucked, in work if we don't hit our deadlines we are fucked. The same goes for any kind of job which require targets or deadlines. The explanation for MGSV is a simple one in my mind, either Konami took stuff out to sell to us later, or the Devs simply couldn't hit the deadlines which sounds silly to me. Especially taking into considering from what we've seen from the Tech Demo's of the Fox Engine, I'd imagine it'd be hard to not create the content required before the deadline is up. Either way your spot on, we can't set the blame due to a lot of variable decisions that happen during development.

Yep, I fully agree with Chapter 2 being a cop out, I'm taking the same stance as a few of you who have said would've preferred the story to end when chapter 1 does.

The Destiny comparison is clear in terms of the story looks to be gutted here and there, just look at the start compared to the middle and then the end. Some say it's pacing issues but the endings are abrupt and not really well connected, it's not even hidden endings like originally thought, it seems like all ending were meant to be seen in sequence and then the story would have wrapped up with Mission 51 but the fact that they had filler in between endings in the form of rehashed missions screams like it was gutted and patched back up.

Holy shit
that Skullface death scene

Huey killing him was the cherry on top. Had it not been for that it wouldn't have been as cringe worthy imo. I like the idea behind Skull Face but his motivation was barely explained as well as his overall execution as a villain being weak as shit.

The more I think about this game the more of a disappointment it is.

It's weird, I understand the disappointment feeling, it's similar to what I felt after Peace Walker and 4. For me, it came from having so many expectations for the story and narrative and characterization.

To an extent, same thing is happening here. Story and narrative is not necessarily going where I wanted it to go, but I had my expectations in check. But what's making that disappointment go away is the fact that I've never had such a fun time playing a Metal Gear game ever before (and yes, I've been day-one for every Metal Gear title since MGS1 in 98).

Granted, I play games differently now too. I've never played so much in the past two days for like 8 years than I have with MGS5, and I've played about 7-8 hours.

Why is everyone just complaining in the spoiler thread? Lighten up guys.

Part of the reason is because we can.

If we were to complain in the OT it would be full of spoiler tags, which most posters won't click on.

Also being a Spoiler thread, the story takes centerstage by default.

The mechanics and such are a known factor.

It will get better as people beat the game and come in here.

And once you get to Africa, get ready to get sick of it too. Such a shame for this game's lack of environments....

good to hear....... I loved the prologue. but so far its been the only thing that actually feels like metal gear to me. but nothing after that yet. this has not even come close to scratching the itch ive had for years waiting for a new MGS game. change the character names and the name on the box and no one would think it was a metal gear game. well, except the cardboard box, classic

I really wished that you had.

The Shalashaska explanation was pretty neat. We were never given one prior to this game about it right?

I probably should have known I wasn't going to get what I wanted out of the story after the letdown that was 4 and Peace Walker. And to be completely honest, that's fine. It's not my baby at the end of the day for as much as I love this series, it's Kojimas. With that said I still think the overall story is piss poor and could have been better even with the twist. I agree with you the gameplay is the best it has ever been and the missions that get it right are a ton of fun, but there are way more filler missions than there are good ones. All of that just adds to the disappointment for me personally.

I think a lot of us in here agree that many apsects of the gameplay are excellent. MGSV is an ambitious title with some truly crazy shit. Maybe even best game this year. Most of the complaints have to do with the story.

Yes I agree about the story. Taboo cutscenes we're removed apparently? Like the kids on the tanks, being shown how to shoot a gun, the nuclear trailer opening? It seems like a lot was cut out that could have made the story better.

I really hope the good missions get more condensed as this thing goes on. so far episode 2 where you rescue Kaz felt like story then nothing.......til 6 when skull face shows up sort of felt like story then nothing again for the next 3 so far. pretty disappointing to be honest. if I went back in time a couple of years and told that to myself. I would have never believed it.

I know every game should stand on its own merits but goddamn the potential for fan service in this game was ridiculous (especially given it was the last metal gear) and it was hardly touched.

- Gray Fox
- Solid Snake
- Foxhound

The lack of Gray Fox is weird, because Kojima loves the character. He would have been good for MGO, too.
