No. There's literally no buildup to it at all. They just go "HERE IT IIIIIIIIIS!" I may not have minded the twist as much if Venom had slowly begun to realize that he isn't who he thinks he is and then unravels the mystery, climaxing in us seeing his true memory of what happened. But nope. It's just kind of thrown at you because twist.

That's so unbelievably terrible. I was thinking there might be something in 45. lololol

What happened Kojima?

Just got Paz's ending and I gotta say that was the last thing I wanted from this story. Paz was literally the last character in the game I had any interest in since anything else either went nowhere or got an equally awful conclusion. So then the twist is she lived, but she didn't live is the second twist and the first twist was just a lie so we can have it all happen again?

God damn that pissed me off. Not just the awful approach of it being a double twist where nothing is real about it but the fact the tapes in GZ make it easy to feel sorry for Paz as a character, then all we get is brief hope we might actually save someone followed by more crap for her then find out it was never real. It doesn't even make any sense since this isn't the same Boss. Damn this stupid story, all I wanted was one victory but I can't even get that from it. I'm surprised D-Horse and DD didn't need to be killed too.

At least we can all agree that the Paz twist was one of the few good aspects of the story.

I don't get why game developers start with the ending of the game first and then if things get bad they have a rushed intro that will usually have little plot or story to clip and remove.

I mean, I can understand that working backwards to a degree could fuck with the design and evolution of a game, but something like Phantom Pain is open world, so the level design is pretty much a non factor.

Well bro, it's all relative. Of course I would say that since I absolutely LOVE MGS4. Some people here consider the twist to be worse than MGS4, others consider it to be better. But the general consensus is that the twist is terrible regardless.

Glad you enjoyed it, though.

For me if the explanation is not ridiculous and totally crazy than I won't hate it. But if it is then I may agree with you. But I thought it was gonna happen since the opening with Ishmael. Damn I'm only on mission 16 so I'm gonna have to wait forever.

Money happened I assume.

I read that there was supposed to be a homage to MG but they ran out of money. I don't know, it seems none here have seen the documentary. Mine is arriving tomorrow and I'll give it a watch, will write here what I find interesting.

I think you're going to enjoy it as long as you listen to the shit tons of tapes you'll get after the ending.

My main issue with this game is NOT that it didn't answer questions. My issue is that it created more unnecessary questions...

If you are not going to answer stuff, then at least don't introduce more bullshit that creates more questions... :(

There is absolutely no way Kojima would make a game about The Boss without thinking "Well, I already introduced the Venom Snake bullcrap to the series. I need an even bigger and crazier twist for this new game".

At this point in time I just want the series to die with the timeline as intact as possible.

The Boss in MGS3 is actually an alien. When The Boss went to space she was abducted by aliens and swapped out. The alien had all of The Boss' memories though so it's fine. They are both the Boss. But then the original boss (not the real Boss as they are both the real Boss now) has crazy space stealth adventures.

It was all in his imagination because of the guilt he had for her. It's one of the better aspects in the story honestly. It'll make sense when you do the wandering assholes side ops and give her the pictures you collect.

I gave her all the pictures and the Paz conclusion pissed me the hell off. So ill disagree with you there.

It was impossible for it to be like that and I knew it the more we saw gameplay videos. The structure of the game just doesn't support a lengthy narrative unless Konami has no problem in throwing in even more money for it because this would probably be a 100 hour campaign.

They decided to give us a couple hours in audiobooks, basically. Still, nothing was really answered in the endgame. Most things revealed in the cassettes should have been stuff we'd be forced to learn as we did missions related to whatever plotline we were working towards, like extracting Huey or Code Talker or even more Liquid.

Story was really secondary to this game and it made me realize how much I value the story, despite how bonkers it might get, in a Metal Gear game. Honestly, I'm personally not really a fan of the gamplay>story type of Metal Gear game we got here.

It's directly opposite of MGS4 on the Metal Gear spectrum when it comes to gameplay vs story. With how many inconsequential missions there are in this game, they could've balanced a better story with less meaningless missions. I got a game with 30 hours of main missions to play but nothing really happened. I would have been totally fine with 15 hours of main missions (which is WAY more than any Metal Gear game has had regarding gameplay) and more story.

The one thing I like about Venom Snake is that it helps cover up Big Boss dying twice.

it may be clever but still no one assumed Big Boss just couldn't survive the first fight because he's Big fucking Boss

That's fine. I found it to be bittersweet that VS faced his guilt and is now at peace with this matter. There's some symbolism as well going on with the butterfly and shit. I'd be pissed off if Kojima brought her back from the grave.

It's the same thing with Peace Walker which is what I expected after seeing more of TPP. However, I enjoyed the story here alot more than singing A.I bullet sponge bosses.

Yeah it was, just kinda pissed me off a bit since I actually wanted Paz to get out of the story alive, despite the fact it wouldn't mesh well with the story set out in GZ. Her story since PW has been pretty tragic overall and it would have been nice to see one of my favorite non-villans (sorta) survive. I really should get used to all my favorite characters dying in this franchise, especially with the rest likely sentenced to a grave in a pachinko machine.

It was a much better plot point than any of the others that were the endings though for sure.

Well, I personally prefer this twist a lot more than my other guess at the time which was this was all a dream or some VR shenanigans.

Yeah, it's lose-lose either way. They shouldn't have had her in the game at all IMO.

The original Boss went through these alien double body shenanigans in order to fight her eternal war with her arch rival, One, despite the fact that they actually kiss and made up well before this supposed eternal war that had lasting ramifications for the entire world started. It's like poetry

Okay, this is what I'm talking about.

The Patriots are the American branch of The Philosophers in a new form.

Ocelot in Portable Ops ending:

The Patriots were actually replacing the American Philosophers and were created by the MGS3 crew. Ocelot or Zero apparently came up with the name in 1970-ish.

Same thing, The Patriots were the MGS3 crew and were replaced by the AIs eventually after fallouts.

Cipher was the organization and Zero, but "The Patriots" was a name thought up for the AI project only after Big Boss left and fell into a coma and Zero went into hiding since he was infected. There's even a reason why the name is "Patriots" and it's specific to the project. Ocelot acts like this is the first time he's heard the name.

Huh?

How is it lose-lose? I'm only partly through it but I already guessed it wasn't real and find it interesting as a manifestation of a fractured mind
It's a bad plot line if she's real or not, IMO. It's such a cliché at this point. It wasn't even that well done or fleshed out. The attempt felt like a rough draft to me.

You have no proof of that, yet!:)

edit: To be honest, if the Black Hound site is anything, it's probably related to MPO or FOB. Maybe a new game announced too, cause MGS TPW and Rising were announced together after a long counter.

I think one of the problems with the Metal Gear games in general is that Kojima thinks every one is his last so he tries to go balls to the wall every time. If he would have accepted that he was going to make more Metal Gear games then he could have sat down and planned out a trilogy instead of just making everything up game to game.

Just when I thought the story couldn't get any worse.

When you think about it, MGSV in general basically went on killing spree in regards to PW characters, whether physically or just character assassination (Huey). Amanda and Cecile should consider themselves lucky

It was a much better plot point than any of the others that were the endings though for sure.
Agreed, but for TPP specifically, I think Quiet had best one and that is even with how really thin it already was plus the inevitable distasteful fanservice. Hell, if enough detail went into her character arc as much as Paz plus the relationship with V, ending Mission 45 would have wrecked me.

At least we can all agree that the Paz twist was one of the few good aspects of the story.

Not for me. I mean the segment was ok, but I just don't care about Paz. Trotting her out for guilt trips is also kinda ridiculous and the silly type of being emotionally manipulative if you did care about Paz.

Kojima doesn't care.

MGS1-MGS3, the Fukushima canon, should be considered separately from the games that came after.

everything after 3 is just a parasite nanomachine induced fever dream

also LOL at ocelot - going from Patriots lackey to Patriots founder to rebel against the Patriots to "what is this 'Patriots' thing?"

No lie that Cipher shit confused the hell out of me when I played PW, I was like aren't they called the Patriots? Why are they talking about this thing called Cipher like I should already know what is?

Huh?

That's because Zero broke up the Patriots when Big Boss left. Then he became/created Cipher, an organization proceeding The Patriots. And then they chose to use the name 'Patriots' again, but for the AI. It's the same core as the group had, believing in the Boss' will, but in a macro form.

this is the stupidest fucking thing

the amount of changes of what the Patriots actually are and what they do is like fucking Cerberus in Mass Effect where it changes between every game for the convenience of the plot

Cerberus was always evil. Mass Effect 2 just acts like they aren't because no one is allowed to ask obvious, important questions in that game.

Kojima doesn't care.

Why did Fukushima leave the series anyway? Maybe we wouldn't be in this mess now.

What a crap continuity.

Well Kojima did say that he was not too concerned with minor plot holes while writing Metal Gear Solid V because "fun" should trump everything else in entertainment.

"The most important part is writing something that is fun, something that is impressive, something that is better than it was before," Kojima said. "So sometimes in the interest of doing this, of having a better experience, we sacrifice some consistencies in the story. I hope the fans and players understand this, but I need to write the best we can, even if there are some small discrepancies."

it's not just the patriots. the number of organizations in the timeline is absurd. Why can't Peace Walker have been the creation of Outer Heaven? You can still have it destroyed in Ground Zeroes, just have them rebuild the same fucking thing in MGSV. No need for MSF then Diamond Dogs then eventually Outer Heaven. I mean surely BB eventually creating Outer Heaven was the origin for this whole base building idea to begin with?

Why did Fukushima leave the series anyway? Maybe we wouldn't be in this mess now.

this is far too convenient, to praise Fukushima and let Kojima take all the blame. ALL THE METAL GEAR GAMES HAD A BUNCH OF STUPID SHIT.

Btw I didn't play Chapter 45 as I want to keep Quiet but is there any lead-in to 46?

They just dump it on you.

"Here is the ending on the off hand chance you want to take a look at it. You can select it from the mission menu."

Well yeah, that started with MGS3. Kojima probably had to dig himself out of the hole that 'Well if these are the human patriots, then I have to somehow make the Patriots into AI like MGS2 started, so I'm going to tie up some loose ends with MGS4.'

Somebody help me. It's so dumb.

It actually worked in 3 though; humanized and explained the story while building on 2's theme of digitization of thoughts/life.

This nonsense now is just fucking stupid.
