Listening to the tapes, and it just dawned on me that
Vulcan Raven was probably infected by the parasites...
barf. parasitve/ nano machines are garbage.

Was that mission 31? That's not the end at all lol

Seems that way. I was kind of happy to beat it but then seeing all these story bits that I had no idea about made me think there must be more. Glance at a walkthrough confirmed then you did. Thanks and I'll return to this thread when I'm truly done.

Yeah! How dare things actually be explained in the somewhat compitent manner, rather than just be supernatural-cause-whatever!

That is probably my biggest issue with a lot of the haters for MGS 4 and MGS 5: The hate towards things actually being explained. Why the hell is that worse than just assuming everyone is some supernatural freak?

Speaking of supernatural, does that mean only The Sorrow and Psycho Mantis actually have weird super powers and everyone else is just parasite/nanomachines?

There was a guy near the first camera outside of the helipad in MGS1 that didn't see me. You know why? Nanomachines.

I'm a genius. Praise my auteur theory.

I assume Paz got her guitar for her diary tapes from parasite/nanomachines.

Such explanations.

Because it's a video game with an anime storyline. No one asked or cared why these weirdos have powers and it actually makes the characters seem less cool when they explain it.

Isn't Psycho Mantis' powers sort of explained in the cassette tapes? Something about microwaves or some shit.

None of those things needed to be explained, this is a series full of crazy shit doesn't even get the basics of genetics right (Liquid having all recessive alleles wat). Bolting on more pseudo-science just makes things worse.

Nanomachines and parasites are Kojima's midi-chlorians. Do we need a scientific explanation for the magic in Harry Potter?

Do I actually need to go around and study soldiers to figure out who's infected, or can I just progress the main story and it'll tell me? Cause getting around the base and looking at the dudes is super tedious. Just finished Episode 25.

You can do it all from the idroid.

Nanomachines and parasites are just as much magic. Which is why people are baffled when Kojima retcons magic with magic.

I think your right but it was so dumb that I tuned out. Not to mention that sure doesn't explain how he came back as a ghost. Some things are just better left unexplained.

Seriously? I know people think kojima is amazing but do you really expect him to put hints about a character for the sequel that he doesn't even know he is making. The medic is supposed to be a brand new character, one that is created by the player.

yeah, i know

that's why he sucks and there's no oomph to this twist

What fucking pisses me off the most about the Quiet situation is that in PW after you "kill" Paz she still stays in whatever Motherbase unit you assigned her too, even though she doesn't add anything unique to the gameplay.

Yet here we have possibly the best functioning companion AI in videogame history, and she gets unceremoniously removed from the game with zero godamn warning, with no option to use her on replays/free-roam or whatever because "lol, feel the phantom painz"

Still so mad about this. DD and D-Walker are great and have their uses, but Quiet was definitely the best all around buddy to have along in your average situation.

So is Paz a figment of my imagination? I showed her all of her photos, and listened to cassette 4, but it still seems... there?

OH GOOD, LET'S LISTEN TO A TAPE ABOUT HAMBURGERS...

FUCK YOU MILLER AND CODE.....

.....

.....

TALKER.....

WORST VA IN ALL OF MGS.

so has kojima ever actually read moby dick

why was there so much moby dick imagery and referencing, between ahab and ishmael, and whales, and the whaling ship, etc

i was so excited during the intro, because combined with the obvious setups for meta stuff (character creator, name/date entry) i thought that would, obviously, lead into a game about a player single mindedly pursuing an end goal to the point of questioning their own actions, to go along with big boss' descent into madness

that would make sense

that would tie things together

but now i'm actually left wondering what the moby dick stuff even means to the narrative as is. is it just there because kojima thinks it sounds cool?

Yeah, his powers are explained in the tapes.

He powers the microwaves?

Makes sense why Volgin was so hot...

....Man no matter how they explain Psycho Mantis, he's fucking lifting Helicopters and killing people and being able to sit on the lap of a man on fire on a Unicorn on fire being spit out of giant Fire whales.

Explain that, nanomachines.

Completed the game. Here are my thoughts and questions.

  • SS kills VS in the original MG. Lessens the impact of the legendary Solid Snake.
  • There is no explanation regarding SF motivations. Not to mention his VA is comedic.
  • Kojima wasted Sutherland potential. He is after revenge after SF and he speaks to him JUST ONCE in the entire game.
  • Clueless protagonist and don't tell me that since we are playing as a body double hence he does not speak. If you have played through the game, the Medic underwent hypnotherapy to make him feel like he is the real Big Boss.
  • What happen in Chapter 2?
  • What happened to the legend that was Big Boss? A legendary mercenary? Turns out he is a coward, just like Cipher, operating behind the scenes.
  • Missing link? The game does not provide any missing link. No explanation behind the formation of Foxhound, Big Boss making amends with Zero and returning to US.
  • Not a single mention of Solidus.
  • The game was incomplete. Let me remind you: Episode 51
  • What happened to the parasites? Were they prevented and cured?
  • What happened to Code Talker?
  • What happened to Kaz's revenge against Cipher in Chapter 2?
  • And tons of many other qs.

It's a shitty D grade plot. and downvote me to oblivion. I am glad Konami is getting rid of Kojima. He is a D grade story teller and lost his way after MGS3.

Ahab (Venom) and his unit are chasing their own white whale, Skull Face and Cipher. They're consumed by revenge.

Yeah, it's pretty flimsy, but like all symbolism in MGS it's heavy handed and lacks nuance and subtlety.

No idea what was up with the giant flaming whale. My guess is Kojima had something planned for that and didn't get around to explaining it. Or maybe it's just more heavy handed symbolism. Kid Mantis/Fire Volgin chose to incarnate a fire whale because reasons? I dunno.

I agree with some of this, but this is blasphemy

TRULY MAJOR SPOILERS:

Why is Psycho Mantis in this game? Why is he mad, or in the state of "revenge" or "phantom pain" against Big Boss? Why
.

Why?

WHY?

.....

Whatever. Best/Worst Metal Gear Solid game.

Listen to the Informant's report tapes. Ocelot explains everything you need to know about Mantis. Its actually one of the best story angles in the game imo.

But basically Mantis does not have any control over his powers as a kid. He is an innocent catalyst. People around him who are very angry for revenge are able to control his powers. Russians were transporting Mantis around Russia while doing studies on him.

-So Venom awoke from his coma and that very second Mantis's plane crashed near Cyprus. Venom's anger triggered Mantis and shit hit the fan during the flight and it crashed. Mantis was the only survivor.

-So the Russians took him to some facility where Volgins body was at. Volgins anger for revenge to kill BB triggered Mantis again and that led them to the hospital where both BB and Venom were at. The coincidence and small chance of all that happening is actually very cool if you think about it.

-At the hospital (or where ever XOF soldiers clashed with Volgin) Skull face met both Mantis and Volgin. Skull face's anger for revenge overrode Volgins anger. As a result Skull face was able to control Mantis, Volgin and Sahelanthropus (by way of Mantis) all the way until mission 31.

-At mission 31 Eli's anger overrode Skull face so you are basically fighting Eli in mission 31. Eli continues triggering Mantis and uses him to escape from motherbase.

Its actually not that hard at all to understand. Easily the best thing Kojima did story wise in this game even tho it was all a coincidence. Mantis and his journey in this is really messed up lol.

I'm glad to know you need everything spelled out for you.

Poor and pathetic joke. Really. Dont mean to offend you. A developer is only good as his current work. Kojima dropped the ball hard on this one. Went over budget, wasting his time on Twitter, poor Project Management, a 7 year development cycle etc

Konami is bad and evil, yes. But Kojima is equally if not entirely responsible for the story we got in MGS5.

He needs to move ahead in life and Konami should get a level headed guy to write the story for the new Metal Gear.

Miller is such a god damn baby too
"The boss is creating a new nation while we watch over Venom."
"B-B-but I wasn't invited...."
"Well no because we both need to be here to-"
"That BASTARD."

He hates BB just cause he didn't invite him to his birthday party. Trivial BS.

it's a good thing story is such an incredibly minor part of MGSV, then.

Kojima is the producer of this game.

The producer's job is to make sure the game is done on schedule and on budget.

Hideo failed.

Yeah it makes a kind of dumb sense...

except why Psycho Mantis has magic powers (still unexplained except for some codecs where Ocelot blabs on about how it's not quackery, it's SCIENCE! Pyrokenesis and Telekenesis, MAGIC! But maybe it's better unexplained, at least it's not parasites) and that it's literally all just Ocelot laborously explaining the plot in casettes

that's what a lot of the cool stuff in this game is, Ocelot or Miller laborously explaining the plot in casettes. That's what it took for me to understand wtf Skullface actually wanted to do in the first place and whose freaking side he was on (his own)

Let's completely ignore the S tier gameplay, shall we?

-So Venom awoke from his coma and that very second Mantis's plane crashed near Cyprus. Venom's anger triggered Mantis and shit hit the fan during the flight and it crashed. Mantis was the only survivor.

Wasn't it Big Boss that triggered Mantis? Big Boss woke up first, once they were aware of the threat they woke up Venom in response.

Hideo failed.

He took 7 years to make Fox Engine and MGS5. That is SEVEN YEARS...in those 7 years, PS3 and X360 are history, PS4 and X1 have sold close to 40 million units combined, We got three Uncharted games, The Last of Us, fantastic Xbox One exclusives, The Witcher 3 and much more.

Actually, Miller's reasons make sense when you think about it but it's not portrayed well at all within the game.

Miller felt their time during Peace Walker was perfect and he loved it. Ground Zeroes and the time skip happens. He agonizes thinking this stuff about BB and getting but then finds out BB actually left that all behind to create a new nation for himself. All that time and pain he suffered through the time frame of TPP meant nothing to BB and Miller ended up hating him for it.

Lmao Miller was so dramatic all game with his face grabbing.

I kinda feel bad for him now. I assume that by the time he got control over his powers he ended up stuck doing evil crap since that's all he knew.Truly fits the idea that nobody is a evil douche except Huey.

So, I guess, sadly, I did understand the story. I was hoping I missed something and it wasn't as basic as you described. Is there a reason why Eli is so filled with hatred other other than me rescuing... or queuing up the future games?

I'm not gonna say I'm "glad" that Kojima got fired because he just put out the best game he's ever made but I can certainly understand why Konami did it.

Dude went over budget, over time and still wasn't done. How can anyone blame them for firing someone who mismanaged a project like this? I can certainly blame them for a bunch of other crap things they do but not this specific thing.

Besides, it's also an opportunity for Kojima to work on something not Metal Gear, where after V it's very apparent that he has no idea how to squeeze out any more story from this universe.

I thought the twist would make Venom Snake get all mad and then curse BB but instead he's all Mary Sue and like "oh gee BB thank you for allowing me to be you!!"

really annoying how Kojima is such a huge Big Boss fanboy..

also you can tell Ishmael is Big Boss when his first thought upon seeing a man who is unable to walk is "LET'S USE THE STAIRS." BB was always a little stupid. Dead Giveaway.

the wrong snake's revenge is non-canon

Exactly.

Also, was it ever said if Miller's arm & leg was lost from the helicopter crash during GZ, or from the Soviet's capturing/torturing him? He seemed alright on the table in the hospital during which they defib'd the real Big Boss.
