So Skull Face was always supporting Snake in the background, right? During MGS3 and whatnot -- Did they ever mention any specifics of what he was doing? Anything we could see when playing MGS3 and contextualize as Skull Face's doing?

Support him remotely at Para Medic's office.

I wish they would have explained his role in Snake Eater a bit more, could have been really interesting but yet again another squandered story beat.

I like imagining Bill in logistics pouring over maps while trying not to freak out about the zombie looking man in the cubicle next door.

just finished the game

the fuck was that ending

I need to sleep but now my brain is just going to go into overdrive trying to put all the pieces together. Damn it Kojima!

When Zero is talking to Boss in the hospital, what does he mean by "I've sent him [Skullface] to Africa" since this is after Skullface poisoned Zero and thus I can't see him taking Zero's orders anymore.

So does Ahab (Venom) actually know he is the decoy, a fake Big Boss? If he does, when does he figure it out?

I took 'him' as Eli...

Wow the later eliminate the armored vehicle unit missions suck so much. These gunships take so many rockets to the face that I spend more money resupplying than I get from the mission. Who the hell thought all this shit would be fun, let alone fun enough to do 15 times.

He doesn't during the game. He figures it out at some point between episode 51 and the epilogue, which takes place in '95 before or during the Outer Heaven Uprising. It's not clear as to when exactly he figures it out, but based on the cut dialogue with him talking to Boss, it's sometime before that.

"I don't mind about myself, but what he did to you, I can never forgive. I've sent him to Africa, and I doubt he's coming back."

And that's after the "he seems to have done something to me" talk obviously about that dagger tape. Anyway Eli escaped to Africa, wasn't sent there.

It's more fun if you use the Brennan or that semi-auto sniper under the Brennan in the development tree. Still takes a while, but more fun!

But yeah most of them are so time consuming to destroy it's just easier taking the guys out and fultoning the tanks then destroying the helicopter.

So... Quiet is 2015 Aerith?
Given that most emotional impact amounts to "my god, I put money into her" it seems to fail a bit. The game's story isn't simply long enough. We use Quiet as a tool, we barely build a connection and those weird fan services scenes don't help. There were genuine moments that were nice, like Quiet chasing the soldier with the knive or when she jumps down to get the pendant. But the real trouble is that she is Quiet. If she weren't we could've had nice banter between her and "us" during missions. Something that builds the character, the relationship and the bound.

Anth0ny's random MGSV thoughts part 1/6593:

how awesome would it have been if hayter voiced the real big boss at the end

just like 3 lines in the entire game, you could have kept him mute during all the hospital stuff

yo ughhhhhhhhhhh

infinity

we are all big boss

and that is

BwTB4XG.gif

We were all already Big Boss on the inside. Adding that to the actual lore through a cut-out was dumb.

Then he'd have had to voice him in Ground Zeroes.

next thought: how did buttfuck mcgee phantom big boss become as skilled on the battlefield as the real big boss? was that ever explained? are we to assume that there are a bunch of people on earth as skilled as big boss in the field of tactical espionage action? I mean didn't they clone that dude for a reason

"He was MSF's best soldier" pretty much all we're getting.

I wanna know when the brainwashing took place, since he was in a coma.

It's like Hideo sat around and thought, "how can we make Big Boss seems like less of a badass?"

MAKE IT SO HE HAD SOMEONE DOING ALL THE WORK FOR HIM BEHIND THE SCENES

MAKE IT SO SOME RANDOM MEDIC CAN DO ALL THAT HE NORMALLY DOES

It probably has been discussed but where is the burnt corpses cut scene from the beginning of the nuclear trailer ?

Anything dealing with the fire in the village got cut.

I thought it was poetic.

This is Kojimas last MGS. What better way to end it than 'You were Big Boss all along.' It's the sweetest thing.

that shit is straight off the cob

In OUTER HEAVEN, men become DEMONS actually pretty decent human beings all things considered

"He was MSF's best soldier" pretty much all we're getting.

I wanna know when the brainwashing took place, since he was in a coma.

It took place during the coma. They used his comatose state to continually reinforce his subconscious with the idea that he was BB.

Pequods saved my ass plenty of times. He even goes out of his way to attack nearby outpost while I'm waiting at the damn LZ. It's........he does alot.

Just watched the Nuclear trailer again.

It's kinda sad that those trailers pretty much showed all the cutscenes in the final game and then some.

I just can't help looking at the twist and going "MGS2 did it better."

It's so dumb how Venom seems to just accept the truth. Anger? Resentment? Revenge (aka the main theme of the game?)? Nope, none of that. Just completely fine with this and goes on to follow Big Boss' Intrude N313 plan. It's like he's a huge fanboy too like

BB "I took your life away and now I'm going to control it."
Venom "SURE THING BOSS!"
BB "You're going to be me and you're going to do everything I tell you to."
Venom "SURE THING BOSS!"
BB "Any problems?"
Venom "NO WAY BOSS THIS IS SO COOL!"

Why did it all have to end like this? Why couldn't it have just been a simple and sweet revenge story against Skullface and actual character progression to turn BB into a villain?

because it parallels mgs2's idea that anyone can be the 'world's greatest soldier' if they have identical memories and experiences. by brainwashing a guy who is already close to big boss and probably extremely familiar with his experiences and supposedly fighting right there alongside him most of the time, he should have the same potential.

i mean, since mgs the series is constantly subverting the idea that genetics mean anything when it comes to a soldier's abilities.

It was quite the opposite of poetic...

Exactly. It makes cloning him pointless if he can just magically be as good as Big Boss via hypnotherapy.

The twist isn't about "some random medic" being Big Boss, it was about you. Phantom Pain goes from being a story about Big Boss to a story about you. That IMO is a great twist but it's a shame that nothing follows it up.

Ha, that's so lame.

I know I'm obviously getting into "Kojima didn't know at the time" territory, but I kinda wish he didn't have the fucking horn protruding out of his head. Obviously no future version of Big Boss had that, and I'm sure there's some art of Big Boss from the original Metal Gear (or... phantom Big Boss) with no horn to be found lol. I'm just not sure what that adds to the character... it's not really a cool design choice, it's just weird.

No lie: the entire game, every time I saw that horn I kinda thought to myself "this must be some kind of dream, or that's not really big boss, because he obviously don't have that fucking thing in any other game that takes place in the future".

In a similar vein, Big Boss' scene at the end of MGS4 is a little less meaningful to me now. He straight up tells Snake "You've killed me twice, and today will be the third time." Does he really need to keep the phantom big boss a secret from Snake at that point?

It really feels like the only reason why this phantom big boss exists is to give kojima an out for killing him in Metal Gear only for him to come back in Metal Gear 2. Now, I've only played those games once each, but wasn't Big Boss still an asshole in Metal Gear 2? Even though there wasn't that much of a "downfall" of the phantom big boss in this game, I suppose I can see how he would keep going down, leading into the events of the original Metal Gear.

But the real Big Boss is kinda awesome. There is no downfall to speak of. At least it wasn't made very clear to me. Why is he an asshole in Metal Gear 2? >_<

yes this is the kind of shit going through my head as those credits rolled. god I'm a nerd. gonna sleep now. later gaf <3

I think that's what most of us felt, and I don't really have the answers sadly. :/

He believed it and had all the knowledge dumped in his brain. Kojima just watched Chuck one night.
