The Venom Snake thingo would be more interest if it wasn't telegraphed blatantly to the audience going all the way back to the original reveal, culminating with the goddamn opening, which consists of facemaker.exe, mysterious Keifer bandage man, and a song about a doppleganger playing in the background. There was no subtltity. It was so obvious you're not actually Big Boss that a part of me was hoping you were and it was a deliberate double ruse.
And I think this is a theme the game really faltered with. You have this fairly surreal opening sequence with fire whales and flaming Volgan and Psycho Mantis and a delirious maybe-it-is-maybe-it-isn't Snake, mysterious bandage man, etc. And then stuff in the trailers like that shot where Venom is talking to Skull Face and also has an apparition of him on Mother Base that got everyone talking.
I don't know about you guys, but the impression I got from early media was that the line between fact/fiction was going to be blurrier and the game would play heavily on themes of surreal and hallucinations. Like an odd, unsettling vibe to the whole thing.
What we got was something oddly straight down the road. Everything was explained outright and kinda boring and dull. And Venom isn't actually Big Boss like you expected, so clap clap. The end.
