The Venom Snake thingo would be more interest if it wasn't telegraphed blatantly to the audience going all the way back to the original reveal, culminating with the goddamn opening, which consists of facemaker.exe, mysterious Keifer bandage man, and a song about a doppleganger playing in the background. There was no subtltity. It was so obvious you're not actually Big Boss that a part of me was hoping you were and it was a deliberate double ruse.

And I think this is a theme the game really faltered with. You have this fairly surreal opening sequence with fire whales and flaming Volgan and Psycho Mantis and a delirious maybe-it-is-maybe-it-isn't Snake, mysterious bandage man, etc. And then stuff in the trailers like that shot where Venom is talking to Skull Face and also has an apparition of him on Mother Base that got everyone talking.

I don't know about you guys, but the impression I got from early media was that the line between fact/fiction was going to be blurrier and the game would play heavily on themes of surreal and hallucinations. Like an odd, unsettling vibe to the whole thing.

What we got was something oddly straight down the road. Everything was explained outright and kinda boring and dull. And Venom isn't actually Big Boss like you expected, so clap clap. The end.

I will tell you how it worked for me. There were many theories and I knew about the second big Boss theory, but i didn't look deeply into it. When I started the game and played the game for over 100 hours I was 100% (forgot about all theories) sure that I'm or the character I'm controlling is Big Boss for these reasons:

1. building motherbase.

2. From gameplay stand point you really feel like you are controlling the legendary soldier Big Boss.

3. You really feel like you are in control of the motherbase and your men and NPCs are calling you Boss.

4. There is sub plots (Eli, Code Talker, Quiet ), which made me not focused on who is Ishmael .

When I started the final mission and the saw the cut scene at the beginning, I knew Ishmael is the real Big Boss. But what made me appreciate it is Venom is you and you is Venom and the legend of Big Boss is bigger than the man himself. Venom believed that he is Big Boss because the people around him made him believe. This is a powerful message imo.

edit: When I heard the tape about Eli's DNA test and he wasn't your clone, I was confused but then dismissed that Eli is Liquid.

the hospital scene made it pretty clear to me who really is the boss. Ishmael does all sort of crazy things, does take bullets and knifes like it's nothing while you are struggling to stand up.

The effect it has on me is that I was doubting that I was BB the whole time but at the same time being pushed to do all these things that BB was capable of and being called BB by the soldiers negates that doubt.

Some of the posters on this thread acknowledge that same feeling. So maybe that was what Kojima was after.

Unless The End and The Pain were burnt to a crisp then I could see that. However, thinking about it more The Fury probably should have been naked lmao.

Wasn't the Fury in the space suit? Maybe he was nekkid inside that thing?

God do I ever miss Metal Gear bosses.

Why did they leave them out?

Because whenever I have a bleak super-depressive vision of what an upcoming game might do, it actually happens, and I hate that this is the case and I need to stop following video games.

I'm sorry.

Thanks for the replies guys! I think we'll need a couple of weeks to fully sort out exactly what happened, similar to Bioshock Infinite, there is a lot to analyze here. Christ, we should put together a MGS-GAF Unit to work out a comprehensible theory and explanations. Written with critical standards of an academic research paper from Oxford, becasue thats the minial requirements needed to sort this out.

And if this 9/11 extra game/content rumor is true? May god have mercy upon our shattered minds...

I found this write up to be pretty good.

Who knows? Haha. I just liked the reference, thought it was pretty cool even though the Cobra unit didn't need explanations.

Your reaction to the twist will also depend on how invested in Big Boss as a character you were. Personally I couldn't care less about him after MGS3, to the point where I was annoyed he showed up in MGS4 at all. Logic aside I was just like "wtf are you doing here? This is Solid Snake's game :(". So MGSV recontexualizing his legacy a bit honestly gives me some schadenfraude pleasure.

I haven't completed the game. Im just coming in here blind to kind of...I don't know express some frustrations and disappointment with this game. I just completed Chapter 1 and I got the credits and everything....I just have to ask is that the end of the main story? I can appreciate the open world but one thing I loved the most about MGS games were their zaney and batshit insane story.

This game while containing the best movement and gunplay controls of an MGS, is such a poor reflection to what the series had always been about to me narratively. I feel MGS' prior to peace walker, benefited from a more linear approach because the story was able to have more focus.

I guess right now this game has me feeling burnt out and disinterested. I just want to know if the story makes this monotony, feel justified or rather if the story will pick up speed.

The first line Big Boss says to Venom is

"Who am I? You're talking to yourself"

In Keifer's voice...No way he Ishmael was going to be just another guy.

Mission 43 is worth continuing the game for.

So I feel like in the end there are only a very small handful of missions that are "canon" - meaning that they A) convey the plot, B) take place in interesting settings, and C) generally adhere to the design that the creators had in mind.

Examples include the Honey Bee mission, rescuing Huey, meeting Quiet, and the "Skull Face" epic Soviet base infiltration. These moments feel like they were actually designed by real people to convey some kind of vision, and take place in contextual, interesting settings that make sense. MOST of the other missions, however, just feel as though they took a random objective and put it in a random part of the map and you just happen to be there for some reason.

Which is a shame because when things are good they are SO good... seeing Walker Gears for the first time when you are approaching Huey's lab was just so fucking cool. But there is just so much that feels unpolished and underdone. It's really too bad because with a tighter structure, this could have been the MGOAT (Metal Gear of All Time)

Some people theorized that Ishmael is Kojima especially after GDC 2013 stunt. I feared that idea and thank god it isn't.

99% likely, yes. Try not to fixate on it. Odds are it's fake as heck.
I want to believe. You're probably right, but I so want to believe.

But the virus was already programmed to kill both Snakes, that was the mission plan all along. So why did she alter it to affect them randomly?

So he would live with the fear of death. Never knowing when it might strike. It's worse than a quick death. if not that, then its simply a case of the virus not working properly.

Liquid talks about how there might be a flaw with FOXDIE near the end because neither he nor Snake were immediately showing symptoms. He speculated that Mantis was not affected because of his Mask and Wolf was not affected because of the medication she took. Raven never came into close physical contact with Snake until their actual final battle anyway. Ocelot was likely not part of the program and neither was Donald due to his connection to the secretary of state. Baker and Octopus died as planned. It's not that Naomi intentionally programmed the virus to be random.

After letting my mind go crazy thinking the end of this game would be using solid snake in outer heaven I have little hope this timer leads to anything. I'm curious to see what happens when it hits 0. Last time they did something similar it was for metal gear rising all those years ago with the grassy field and clouds that eventually turned into a thunderstorm.

These people on Reddit are going to be so disappointed.

Alright, cool. I feel really guilty for reading this but ehhhhh, I really don't want to continue playing the game. I figured that you were not really playing as Snake, and I also assumed Eli was Liquid since they first revealed him years back.

Thanks for laying it all out though!

The fact that it's a random dude is also REALLY stupid. I'm actually more partial to the Grey Fox theory that was going around but whatever.

But the real Ocelot is D-Dog right?

I knew it....this makes me so angry....I wanted to play as Big Boss not some fucking patsy..the whole point of this fucking game was to show us how the fuck Big Boss went from Honorable Soldier to Villain..this fucking......this has ruined Metal Gear Solid for me. Gaming is dead to me.

I'll say this. Metal Gear Fan boy insanity is such a beautiful thing to behold. Makes the whole thing almost worth it.

SUCH A LUST FOR DANK MEMES. WHOOOOO?!

More audio files being found from within the game that haven't been used. Curious....?

Apparently the names Gray Fox says off screen in the original MGS, and are real world train stations in Japan.

Also, anyone else see this?

Whenever you visit Paz at the hospital area of Mother Base when you come back outside there is a disappearing sound and visual similar to Quiet's appearing/reappearing look.

Gray Fox? I don't want to harp on a dead fiddle but today is 9/11...

I fuck with this statement a 100%

I thought it was a pretty awesome twist.

Eli being Liquid, That kid being Mantis, the doppleganger/phantom. It all makes sense and I loved it because I just made myself believe I was Big Boss, kind of like Venom did.

Gave me a special feeling finding this all out. Especially now since I don't feel as bad that I let a fucking whiny-brat kid outsmart the Big Boss and his entire army. It was Liquid all along and I was just a phantom.

Brilliant, but expected, IMO.

I see these all the time, on MB and in Afghanistan. It's just wind I reckon.

is this the first time a spoiler thread will need a second topic?

MGSV Spoiler Thread 2: Sons of Lusty Revenge

If there is one MGSV conspiracy I'm prone to believe it's that Kojima himself was responsible for removing his name rather than Konami. Not that it wasn't their fault, indirectly, but I can't imagine this is exactly what he had in mind. It makes me feel bad.

I know it's been said but the problem with the story is not so much what happened but what didn't happen.

Such a missed opportunity. Thankfully the gameplay is superb.

And for those who don't know, this is Robert A. Peeler, MGS community manager's twitter account.

Weird he would post V's arm grabbing a plane.... on today of all days.

A.... plane? That's cyborg ninja's head?

Unless this is a joke. hard to tell over internet sometimes....
