I am a little confused as to why Mantis betrays Skull Face, and especially confused as to why Mantis and Man on Fire are fucking up xof at the start of the game

I was under the impression that Mantis was never working with Skull Face, he was just feeding off of the energy of Venom, Skull Face, Volgin, and Eli

Then again, I haven't listened to all the tapes, so I could be wrong.

I assume you're being sarcastic. I definitely think some more varied new missions/third area in the game's 2nd half would make more sense than what we were given. Again, I loved the gameplay but many of the decisions just strike me as really odd. Replaying the entire first mission just because the intro is slightly different? (Let alone the myriad of harder versions of missions with the same cut scenes counting as "new main missions")

I came off like a dick as usual but the game was clearly rushed out.

With all the shit going down at Konami, I'm amazed the game was this fully featured.

A third area of operations would've been nice but at some point you have to be realistic and take what's given to you. I feel people are seriously underrating the effort put into designing these maps. With the ways the missions can play out, level design is borderline genius at places. It's not really comparable to other open world games, at least what I've played. I've heard comparisons to Far Cry 2 but the fourth one is the only one I've played.

Mantis wanted you to escape but I don't really know why in the long run.

Mantis attaches himself to whoever has the biggest lust for revenge/most hatred and Eli had more than SF, it's really simple.

Mantis follows vengeful desires, hence using Volgin (wanting revenge against BB) and then allying with Skullface (revenge against Zero and BB) and then finally latching onto Eli who is apparently the most vengeful fucker in the world.

That makes sense, but I find it weird Skull Face was never like, yo, why did so many of my men burn to death in Greece?

Then again, why did The Pain attatck The Ocelot unit

It's explained in the tapes about Mantis. He was a russian project that had little personality and reacted to people with negative strong emptions. Hewent loose when he was on a plane and the plane was close to Volgins corps. The boy reacted to the hatred, revieved him (in a way) and both went straight on to Big Bosses location. Skullface just recognized that and followed them with XOF. At the point of the hospital Mantis wasn't on Skullfaces side. After BB managed to flee, Skulflace approached Mantis and Mantis recognized his anger and lust for revenge and followed him since then, taking Volgin with as a puppet. But everything changed when Eli was close. He had anger and as a child he had a closer connection to Mantis and Mantis left his old "masters", Volgin and Skullface for Eli. That's why Skullface is wondering who is more angry and vengeful than him.

It was completely ridiculous. Plus his plan was idiotic. First they say he wants to eradicate everything BUT English, then he explains to you IN English how he actually wants to get rid of ONLY English because (despite his perfect American accent) he cane from some small village where he was forced to speak all different languages and that made him hate.... English.

Even by MGS standards that shit makes NO sense at all. And having it explained in a car ride where you're crammed so close to him that your knees are bumping is borderline comical.

Wait until you listen to Skull Face & Code Talker tape 2 and learn that he's infected with all the other parasite strains, so English is the only language he can speak without dying.

My headcanon is, that Skullface was still talking, Venom was just annoyed and played the music via his idroid to drown him out.

The funny part was that I had already started music on the walkman and turned its speakers on at the start of that ride. Big Boss, listening music, zero fucks given about skullface's blather.
