For Street Fighter 5, youve taken a different approach to DLCs where new characters can be unlocked rather than purchased, which is a great thing for gamers, of course, but Im just curious about what brought on this change.
For me, anything that makes the players happy is fine with me, although Id be lying if I said there werent many elements within Capcom who were worried about taking the approach in that direction in terms of business.
But basically we want to have a product that matches the times of its release date and this system we had with Street Fighter 4 where we released a number of disc-based updates like the Super Version, the Ultra Version, and the 2012 Version, and asking users to essentially pay for a new product every time. I think weve kind of gone from that. PC games, online games, and mobile games have really changed the game in that sense in that theres less and less of a trend in the industry of people to pay you a certain amount for a big product and thats it. They got it and they play it.
Theres a certain change in the way things are going and it ties into the way we want to use the PS4 online services effectively. As you know we have these characters and people have the option to buy the character at once. If they dont want to there are other ways to get it in the game. We wanted to put these services out for the players so that they can choose which way they want to interact with them.
People might say that they dont want to buy a game because they know that there will be a newer version later in the year and they might have some concerns. But this is it. If you go and buy this game on the day it comes out, youve got Street Fighter 5. Its gonna run continuously from there on.
I told you that I said Id be lying if there were elements in the company who were maybe concerned about this direction. What I want to do is relieve those concerns and get them off my back by and to say to you guys out there that you can go out on day 1 and buy this or even pre-order it right now if you want and thats it, youre in the game, youve got Street Fighter 5, youve got full confidence in the fact that its all right there for you. Thats the part I need you guys help on to help [Capcom] realize that this was the right way to go with the game.
