I'd recommend Wolverine but, by God, avoid Origins at all costs. It's been retconned now anyway so anything that happens in there is null and void. And with good reason.

I haven't watched Origins but isn't that where Logan gets his Adamantium claws or something? How would he have them now if it's been retconned? (I'm assuming he gets them in Origins because of the word "Origins" and him not having them in the past part of DofP)

Or does he have them before the events of Origins? (I may have forgotten if it was mentioned in X1 - X3. not watched them in ages)

Best not to dwell, it may break your brain.

Logan getting his claws
is implied at the end of Days of Future Past
. It's the only thing that happens in Origins that matters.

Huh, I'll have to check that out again then.

Also I wonder what exactly has been retconned. Obviously not X1 (though I imagine anything that involves Mystique has since she's
no longer the cruel bitch since she was never experimented on after killing Thrask.
Since Rogue is shown and all.)

Also the whole cure thing (and well the entirety of X3) and Origins and Wolverine (from what I read Wolverine takes place after X3 right?) would be retconned. What about X2? I forget most of that movie tbf, not watched it in a while.

We won't find out in Apocalypse anyway since no future scenes based on the cast list I'm assuming anyway. Still curious.

Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman, and Channing Tatum have been confirmed for cameos. Hugh is the only one who would exist in the Apocalypse timeline.

Can't believe they never explained Xavier coming back to life

That was in the post credits scene of X-Men: The Last Stand. He transferred his mind to a patient Moira was studying who was born with a blank brain. That patient looks like a bearded Charles, and was implies to be his twin:

the best way to think about it, is that the original x-men trilogy tell the story of the alternate timeline that ended with the sentinels wiping out everyone, and that the 'younger trilogy' is the new timeline where key events were changed for the better.
that IS basically what happened in the comics anyway. the dystopian future continued to exist as an alt timeline, after -despite kitty going back in time and changing history.
that actually makes much more sense than any brain-busting attempt to dissect chronology on what did & didn't happen.

in effect, DoFP has retroactively made the OT slightly cooler, so to speak. ;)

Films that are actually about something and have subtext and deeper characterizations versus films that revolve around spectacle, heavy continuity for the sake of marketing, and always, ALWAYS some "Dominate the world with power device X" villain?

LOL. YUP.

the X-Men movies are good enough that I totally understand why one would prefer them over the MCU stuff but let's not get ahead of ourselves

X-Men 2 is actually "about something" insofar as it explores some deeper themes and goes to some interesting places thematically, and all of the movies do have some excellent character work. SolidChamp isn't that off base.

The sequel is pretty good as well for that Del Toro craziness but Blade is one of the GOAT superhero movies along with Spider-man 2.

I still think it's funny that they brought Whistler back from the dead in 2 just to kill him off again in the beginning of Trinity. Fuck Goyer and that terrible piece of shit movie.

(My god, why do I take part in this now???)

No idea, you take all this shit a lot more seriously than everyone else does.

I think there are already a couple of people here who sounds a lot more "angry" than I do, but hey, if you mean so :)

I'm not really talking about getting heated, it's just you seem to get frustrated by talk like this pretty easily. It's just dumb comic book talk and you should treat it as such. Especially as it's only going to get more common when the DC stuff gets properly on the go. :P

X-Men The Last Stand > Both Thor movies.

They did in the post-credits sequence in X3, but as that film and Origins were confirmed as retconned/non-canon, that explanation has been eliminated. So, really, we are owed an explanation. Or maybe because X3 never happened, Xavier never died?

I'd put X-Men 2/DOFP up there with CA: TWS in terms of comic-book films that, on the surface, are actually about something. Not in an Avengers: AOU 'we're totally saying something... LOL, EXPLOSIONS' way, but an actual 'if you were a first year philosophy student, you'd love this' way.

Ultimately they're still big, silly films. But they aspire to be more. And I do think that should be applauded. Not every film needs to be so dumb that it has a character get over anxiety after being told 'fix it' by a kid.

Yeah but that's the point. The themes are still paper thin in all of these movies it's just that some of them are even worse. None of them explore them to the extent that it's worth praising over others in the genre. Hell, even the relationship between Thor, Loki and Odin is "about something", that doesn't mean it's particularly compelling.

All I'm saying is, (some of) the X-Men movies are good in their own right but it's not because they are particularly creative in how they present the themes that come attached with the franchise.

big deal, you cant make a X-Men movie in today's market leaving out the book's main themes, which are just sitting there waiting to be exploited: intolerance, racism, the Holocaust, etc

X2 and DOFP are better than anything Marvel has has produced.
I would have agreed with you before seeing AntMan, but now...well, no, I still agree. Can't wait for Marvels Spider-Man movie where the villain he faces off against is a snidely whiplash-esque evil version of himself. Probably be Carnage or something equally shit.

Blade 1 > all your favorites.

Deacon Frost is the only Marvel villain with something to say.

spiderman 2 > singer-verse xmen movies > spiderman 1 >= blade 1 > iron man 1

there are other good ones like gotg and winter soldier but that's about it. and they'd certainly be at the end of that ranking imo.

I'm one of the few who liked X3 (though it is the weakest of the series easily) and have enjoyed the whole film series. Though I haven't watched Origins and Wolverine yet. (I did get them recently with the Adamantium collection which I bought since I was also buying the Rogue cut of DofP which pretty much gives me the whole collection lol)

I thought The Last Stand was good, can see where they went wrong but I still enjoyed the movie. I consider First Class and Origins: Wolverine the worst in the x-men franchise.

We haven't seen him use them sense origins was retconned....

Looks like X-Men could be going cosmic after Xmen Apocalypse, as according to Kinberg...

“I feel like we have been, the X-Men franchise, has been growing a little bit more into science fiction. I think Days of Future Past with time travel and the Sentinels took us into a slightly broader, more science fiction world than the films had occupied in the past. We felt like the movies were ready for something that was slightly more, let’s say, cosmic. Once we made the decision for Apocalypse to be the villain at the center of the movie, we wanted to be true to the comics, which are sort of, like you, say, not costume, but it’s not just a guy in a helmet. It is more cosmic.

Can't wait for the new trailer to be released
