Destiny - The Taken King |OT| Time to Explain

So someone explain what all the extra stuff in Destiny does now. motes of light, strange coins, vanguard and crucible commendations, and the ascendant energy/shards I have.

Beat the main TTK story last night, but am still not sure what to do with all this year one stuff...

Motes aren't currency for Xur anymore, they can be eaten to give a big pile of EXP to all your equipped gear or traded to vendors for a nice chunk of rep.

Strange coins are still for Xur, but he doesn't seem to sell weapons anymore. Right now people are using them on his Three of Coins which can be used to induce exotic engram drops from bosses.

Vanguard and crucible marks are gone and any in your inventory turned into commendations (50 for 1). Commendations are used to give yourself a big chunk of reputation towards vanguard or crucible (plus whatever faction you are pledged to).

Shards/energy can be turned in at the speaker for motes and glimmer. They are still used for upgrading old weapons but not much reason to do that now.

So basically I can sell everything off except strange coins. I don't need any of it for upgrades anymore.

Really doesn't make sense to me that the digital versions of the first two DLCs are £35 under the expansion pass, then £40 for the Taken King. That's £75 altogether while the legendary edition ranges from £40-£55 effectively shutting me out and forcing me to buy something that contains the original Destiny.

Question: "How do I now gear up in TTK?"

Datto: "You just... go play!"

This video makes me so happy... now you don't do one specific thing to try to get gear that immediately brings you to max power. You now just play and you will constantly get better gear that gradually brings you up and up, but not too quickly.

BRAVO BUNGIE

The game is feeling much more like a loot game (Diablo III) than an MMO (WoW)

Only year 1 helmets for me so far but others have gotten year 2 helmets.

290 armor rating though (I'm 260 light at the moment).

so just to be clear, the helmet engram xur sells, could be either new year 2 armor, or year 2 versions of year 1 exotic helmets correct?

just dont want any old scrubby year 1 helmets

what armor levels are the xur helmet engrams? 280?

290 and of course year 2

Only year 2 from engrams. My first one was a helmet of the saint 14.

I spent over 200 coins buying engrams... I have 20 left

this is...true, but the downside is you can't worry about cosmetics or weapon or armor preference at all until you start getting a collection of max light stuff, otherwise you're hindering your own RNG progression

so its good in some ways, bad in others

As someone that jumped on the bandwagon last week with 2.0 and legendary edition I have to say I am really pleased with the game so far!
It fits perfectly my limited playtime. Only level 21, I feel I am making constant progress doing a mission here and there and the story is actually pleasant to follow.
The gameplay is of course solid and overall a lot of fun.

Well done bungie, I wasn't sold at launch but I'm hooked now.

I just got back to destiny after almost a year hiatus.

1) How do i get to participate in hard strike playlists? Right now im limited to lvl 20

2) should i just dismantle my old exotic and raid gear and weaponry?

only if you really really don't see yourself ever using it again or buy a year 2 version. the exotic shard youll get as a result is useful.

as far as #1, just keep playing, get your light level up. always equip highest light stuff no matter what. equip individual new decrypted items before going back to cryptarch as it affects RNG

Is there a kiosk, or another way to obtain old class items? If not, for a hunter, is there any reason to keep old cloaks? With the class items having stats I'm wondering if I can dismantle the year one items to make extra room in the vault.

doesn't bug me too much. I have to constantly switch weapons which keeps it interesting.

Although good god handcannons suck in PVE now. So inaccurate that even shooting Phalanx hands is a pain in the ass. There had to be a way for them to fix them in PVP without making them annoying/unsatisfying to use.

Think of it as TTK + the two old DLCs at a discount and then the base game for free if it makes you feel better about it.

Yeah, I caved in and bought the Legendary Edition.

I think I might be in for a good ride. I played vanilla Destiny (I quit right before the Vault of Glass-patching) so I have not seen any of the changes game has had since then. Many of my friends play this and they seem to enjoy it (many of the quit Vanilla, like me), so why not... Wish me luck!

Does anyone else have a Take King icon at the Tower that won't go away? I can't figure out who to speak to or which quest it's coming from?

The $60 package for what you get in the Legendary edition is what we should have gotten a year ago. Current Destiny is not a $120 game. All the QoL stuff you listed is what the game should have been from the start. I don't like paying to beta test.

Again, I can be critical of the game and still enjoy it.

Where specifically do you feel shorted on content?

It can't be missions.

After the base TTK missions, of which there are
8
There are at least another
16 missions

The base game shipped with 20.

I'm not including quests that involve you patrolling around looking for something, I'm talking about unique missions that can be selected on the director.

The Taken War specifically has 2-3 missions per planet and ends with an amazing
boss fight on Phobos.

Variks gives a quest to
hunt down the wolves of mars that has 3 unique missions on mars alone.

Tempted to delete the character I ran with early this year when I first tried Destiny and start all over again. I didn't get very far I believe so it would be nice to start from scratch.

Well after the story is done there is a plethora of quests to go after. It becomes overwhelming even for people who have played both dlc (which I'm assuming you haven't)

There's armsday quests and bounties
Pvp specific bounties
And vanguard bounties, yes

But there's quests from almost every npc in the game in multiples

You could be doing random patrol quests
Or new side story driven quests
Weapon quests
The court of oryx public event quests
Exploring the dreadnaught
End game content:
New strikes
Remixed strikes
Weekly and nightfall
Pvp

And I still haven't even touched the surface on the sheer amount of content in the game. This expansion is literally as big as vanilla and the two dlc combined. What that poster said is straight up misinformation. It's understandable if you don't want to jump in because of no matchmaking, repeatativeness, but trust me when I say there's no shortage of things to do in th game right now.

Keep em of delete them

I hated Destiny when it first came out, got back into it because my son started to play and then had a blast raiding with GAF.

The story of the expansion is great, albeit not that long and they have made a lot of changes to the core game...work has been killing me a so I barely know what to do now that I hit 40 lol but that's part of the fun

Thank you for replying. I decided to jump on the hype-train and give Destiny another change. :) I think I´m in for a good ride.

Played some Taken King today, and I gotta say sticking with Destiny to get to this has been worth it so far. The quests and main story is a blast so far and with so much opened up now Destiny is where it should be I think.

Be careful buying that exotic heavy engram from Xur. I know it says legacy engram, but I thought it meant the year 2 version of a legacy exotic. Its the year 1 version though.

If I'm not equipped to offer an opinion on the game because I'm critical of it (while still playing it) then neither are you because you're so clearly invested in the game that you're not going to see nor admit to any faults. I absolutely feel the campaign missions are too little and too short for the asking price. There is virtually no build up to the menace of the big bad of the expansion. You see maybe two instances of him fucking factions up, there is no sense that he is this inexorable, crushing villain. Instead you wreck his shit in a handful of hours. A few more missions to highlight why he's a threat would have been nice. As it stands it's over in the blink of an eye. I remember the vanilla Destiny campaign being longer and that cost $60 compared to the $40 for this.

Yeah I'm likely going to get a bit more out of it because I enjoy the multiplayer versus with friends but going back to the grind doesn't interest nor seem like meaningful content to me. Post campaign content that asks me to go do crucible matches or run generic patrols isn't a meaningful continuation of the story. Quests that ask me to create orbs of light aren't meaningful content.

You said the campaign is 4 hours, which is factually incorrect. You are of course welcome to your opinion to dislike it, but the Taken War is the second half of the campaign and extends well beyond 4 hours. It's just straight up untrue that the campaign is that short.

Doesn't it go away whenever you kill an ultra, drop or no drop?

The buff goes away yes, until you pop a new coin, but you keep the enhanced chance of a drop due to not picking one up.

Basically if you pop one once, you have a 1X chance to get a drop, and that keeps going up each time till you get an engram. So 9 times later with no engrams earned, your chance is now 9X. This resets once you grab an engram (so you don't grab em).

It also seems like there's a cap to the chance increase, not 100% sure though.
