We gonna act like hayter would have been taken seriously at all as Big Boss in V. Hes fun but has now reached parody level of it.

if hayter was in mgsv, it would have reached shit tier.

sutherland was good, and worked with what little material he had.

That feel when chinner is the voice of reason amongst disillusioned metal gear fans.

Yeah, Hayter's voice would've made the game "shit tier" and it would ruin anyone taking Big Boss seriously, the game that's about some legendary soldier's hypnotised medic going after a zombie looking villain called Skullface (who's evil plan is to take out the english language with parasites) while falling for a female sniper that must be half-naked all the time because she breathes thru her skin.

You're right guys, a bland and boring performance by a famous celebrity is definitely much better for this than Hayter's gravelly and hammy performance. You must be a delusional fan if you think Hayter's voice would fly by in a game like this.

Replaying Mission 13. That mission is freaking fantastic.

I actually like the language plot and how they slowly set it up. Kept me intrigued.

Just replayed and S ranked it, definitely one of the better missions in the game,

Exactly this. I have no idea of what some people think the Metal Gear Solid series is.

"Oh, but this game is so serious and dark!!".

Are you guys for real? This game is fucking ridiculous, just like most games in the series. It's a cartoon (Not a very good one, mind you) with a villain that looks like this:

Hayter would've made this game at least more entertaining to hear.

Shitty rebuttals much?

I just don't get the narrative that Hayter's voice would be unfit for this game.
You posted after I edited, I don't want to get into it. And that wasn't a rebuttal. Stay mad though. Hayter has sucked for a while though and the fact that hayter fans have changed their tune from he's a great VA to, well he was directed to sound bad says enough about the matter. I'll leave it at that.

hayter has sucked for a while so im glad he's outta here

kiefer was a nice attempt but silent snake didn't really work overall, he did fine with the material given

Kiefer actually sounded pretty good in some of the tapes. And his, "NOOOOO" in the episode 51 video is convincing. But I would have preferred Hayter any day.

I still feel like the lack of Kiefer's voice in the game comes down to how expensive he is and that maybe re-shoots and stuff weren't in the contract. Everyone else speaks in paragraphs and he just grumbles and has one-word responses.

I'm not mad, I just find it funny that people think Kiefer's performance was good and fitting for a game like this over Hayter's shtick.

Also, why would you edit your first post calling me mad only to post "stay mad though" in the next one? lol

You're trolling right ?

Nope.

Welcome to the true Phantom Pain :)

I think hayter's voice worked best in mgs1 because the characters looked like polygonal blobs and anime portraits. As snake became more and more detailed and realistic the cartoonish and overreacted nature of his voice work clashed with how snake looks like a normal guy.

Basically, it's a good anime dub voice but not actually good voice work. I appreciated it as a consistency thing through out the series though and rather would've had him on board for this last game instead of Keifer. Who knows, maybe he him being cheaper would've meant that venom would've said more shit instead of staring into space and zoning out during pivotal moments.

Because I didn't want to have to respond to you but didn't edit in time, but alas....it was for naught, you were already responding.

Am I weird for thinking that it was common knowledge that Hayter was far and away his best in MGS2?

I felt the same way when I found out that not everyone thinks AJFA was the best Metallica album.

One last thing, missed this when you edited your post:

I have never said that I thought or think he's a particularly great VA or anything, only that his voice and shtick is perfect for this series and that his charm and passion really shined through his performance.

Keep building staw men tho

That wasn't even a pointed accusation(so it's not really a strawman), it was a generalization of hayter fans. And it's true in large part, just look at people saying blame the director not the performer. This isn't something that I'm making up.

Can we talk about the soundtrack when we face the Skulls?

I mean those synths... HNNNNNNGGGGG
Yeah man, I loved the soundtrack. And the 80's synth definitely fit for the era. I don't think I heard the phantom pain track y ludwig at any point in the game though. Ost is great though tracks are really under utilized.

That used to be my favorite album... But I have changed my opinion every half decade or so. I loved them at one time or another.

I truly believe some people on here don't understand that an exaggerated performance doesn't necessarily mean a bad one. Often the more over the top performances are the ones that are more widely remembered because of the mannerisms and idiosyncrasies that result.

Some examples of Oscar winning performances that are over the top:

Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump, Daniel day Lewis in There will be blood, Heath Ledger as the Dark knight, Denzel Washington in Training day, Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the lambs.

A lot of these performances which are judged as the very top performances in acting could be take to be camp and over the top but they are recognised for the personality they bring to the role.

Can anyone seriously say with a straight face that by bringing in Sutherland over Hayter that Snake had more or even an equal amount of personality he had in the previous titles?

Kojima did such a wonderful job with this game... It can't be said enough. The theme is indeed phantom pain from beginning to end, from waking up to wishing you were back asleep. I constantly feel like the game is missing something, and I don't think this is by accident. The entire time I had this overwhelming feeling of longing and loss hanging over me, never letting go.

I'm thankful so many people feel this way, and how much more perfect is it that there's actually a missing mission? The only difference between myself and many others is my belief that it's intentional. Kojima has created an experience unlike any other, a game intending to teach the player how painful sudden and irretrievable loss can be. Begging for more only plays into the hands of the game's main theme. MGSV will be revisited in the future as a spectacle and achievement in gaming... We haven't even scratched the surface yet! Not once has anyone brought up the heavy postcolonial themes running deep within the game, how loss of self and language- identity and culture, fuel into the theme of phantom pain... That desire to rediscover that missing element.

MGSV, like any great work of postmodern fiction, leaves itself open to interpretation. This doesn't render the experience meaningless, and neither does it signify laziness on part of the author. It's been a month since release, just enough time for my interpretation to settle in.

It's been a month and yet I still feel attached to the game, like a parasite, sucking every ounce of info out of it, hoping without reason for any relief at all. The phantom pain just won't go away.

Man, the word "phantom" has left a bad taste in my mouth. I've heard it crowbarred in everyone speech and the only time it felt natural is when Paz says it.
I wish there was better localization for this game... I mean, it's 2015, how is this horrible translation not remedied at this point ?

It's the theme of the game so Kojima likes to put it in everything

It's the war economy of mgsv

so I beat it last night... actually I guess I beat it a few days ago almost

I didn't even realize Mission 46 was the ending. I was working on getting S Rank on the last missions hoping and then when I finally finished 50, I was all excited about a final ending or scene or something.... something that shows how Diamond Dogs became Outer Heaven, or maybe something with what Diamond Dogs does next and how it eventually integrates into Outer Heaven... or, fuck, anything...

....aaaaaand straight back to the ACC -_-

lol I kept expecting "man who sold the world" meaning to represent how Big Boss became the Metal Gear 1 villain or "selling the world" representing how Diamond Dogs became Outer Heaven -- instead it basically means how Zero, or Kojima lol, tricked the world ;\

and phantom pain is basically the pain you feel when you realize you're just a phantom, that a pain of feeling you're big boss and then realizing that part of you is gone, missing

anyhow, story aside for now...

this game seriously has no New Game Plus? no even integrated New Game mode? I basically need to free roam now after the game took away my only human partner/buddy, and if I want to replay the game in any way, I have to actually use the PS4 system tools to delete a save file? seems awfully clumsy, and also odd consider MGS always has save files and new game pluses...

i mean, i know I can replay any mission but it's not the same because, 1. certain scenes only appear out-of-mission and you can't just replay them, and 2. i can't use Quiet in them anymore, and 3, still not the same as replaying the game with all items/trial stats but re-recruiting soldiers and stealing resources

also, the balaclavas for DDogs and Bandana for Venom, that's it? no Ocelot berets for DDogs, gas mask or skull face paint (snake eater skull paint or actual 'Skull Face')... like, in the last trailer where it shows Venom's face changing, the last 2 are like a demon face with missing parts of his face (it's not just covered in blood, it's actually sort of ghoulish), and then skull face... you can't use those as head options?

i mean, i know I can replay any mission but it's not the same because, 1. certain scenes only appear out-of-mission and you can't just replay them,

The cutscenes replay as if you are playing them for the first time. Even when you're playing as a Combat Unit instead of Venom.

3, still not the same as replaying the game with all items/trial stats but re-recruiting soldiers and stealing resources

The game adjusts guard stats for your level. You should encounter more A+, A++, and even sometimes S guards.

You got the phantom breh.

The cutscenes replay as if you are playing them for the first time. Even when you're playing as a Combat Unit instead of Venom.
I mean cutscenes outside of missions, like when if Morale falls at Mother Base you get a scene with the fighting, or training scene with Ocelot and the handgun users, or even the first time you're Invaded... If you replay all Missions in order, you'll still miss some of those because they trigger outside of and independent from specific mission cutscenes.

GAF

For the love of all that is holy,

please tell me there's a Chapter 3 and I just have to unlock it

Welcome to the club, friend.

Let hunt for the white whale begin.

i honestly dont know what's worse: the hayter fan boys, that hate kiefer just because, and if you liked him in TPP, you're simply wrong, or hayter haters(lol) that treat hayter as if he never had any redeeming qualities, and treat kiefer as the second coming of christ.

Yup, I find both sides a bit annoying too. There's so much to criticize about this game, the Hayter/Kiefer thing is so trivial and kinda meaningless at this point.

i think i liked kiefer now in hindsight, i think certain scenes fit his voice... like the you're all diamonds, i'm trying to imagine hayter do that and i have trouble imagining it -- kiefer's voice sort of owns that for me now

that said, i gotta admit when I was doing Mission 46, I was hoping that this time 'Ishmael' had Hayter's voice haha :P

Miller: "What about him?"

Doctor: "He has a piece of shrapnel, in the head"

9 years later Big Boss has a piece of shrapnel in the head, but the last time he saw him he didn't.

I dunno, maybe he was actually blind.
