Once you understand that it's basically a comic book soap opera version of a Roman colosseum, it all clicks and you can understand how it can be absolutely godawful and fucking amazing at the same time.

There's some good stuff in the first 10 minutes or so of the below documentary about the early days of wrestling and how it went from the fairground to something more organised.

You'll have to put it back to the start if you want to see that but I've set it to start midway through so others can just look at the crazy 30s footage that led to it being banned in London before WW2.

This might be useful How2Wrestling. It's a podcast of a guy (long time fan) and his girlfriend (newcomer) going through various aspects and characters from wrestling. I've been listening to it mostly as someone who came in and left around the attitude era. It's pretty interesting hearing about the history of wrestling and the people involved.

For being fictional, the characters and plots aren't terribly interesting. Why not go all out and get wackier with it? Seems like most of the characters today are just meatheads or look like they're from Duck Dynasty.

Why not get crazy with it and do Ultraman inspired monsters or characters that are supposed to have super powers or something.. I just can't interested without it being wackier.

It has a literal wrestling zombie that shoots fireballs. See the first link I posted on this page.

Wrestling, pro that is, has its roots in circus stage shows.

That's all you need to know. Those shows were performances, not actual combat.

There's also different styles, many regional, such as Lucha Libre and Japanese Pro Wrestling. All have different flavors.

I haven't watched wrestling since 2001ish, so my knowledge is limited to say the least, but all I know is that the more I see of this Shinsuke Nakamura guy, the more I think he might be the coolest motherfucker on the planet.

It is scripted, but any time they can blur the lines between reality and fake, they will. If they are able to get people to think "is that real?" then thats wrestling at best.

IE: CM Punk

And, of course, if you want real brutality, just google CZW, IWA-MS or FMW.

Don't google those, for the sake of your own sanity.

I used to go to ECW matches in the 90s and CZW is just too much. Like watching a snuff film instead of wrestling. My friend goes to their events all the time and I can't bring myself to.

Has CZW gotten cleaner in recent years?

In the early to mid 00's it was all cage matches of death and light tubes everywhere but I dont know what the heck they are doing now.

My friend says an event usually starts with like a clean, highly athletic match or two that he says is actually incredibly impressive from a technical standpoint, sometimes a joke match, and then finishes with a death match. The death matches are just light tubes, glass, barbed wire and just like standing there walloping and shredding one another until covered in blood on the floor. Like a Terry Funk/Sabu match without the wrestling.

Youtube if you dare.

Does that answer your question op? It's scripted, and mostly everyone acknowledges that. However, once you ignore that, it can be entertaining, and you'll enjoy the silliness, botches (bloopers), etc.

I think the only promotion that has actual seasons is Lucha Underground, but its presentation is completely different than the others. It's more like a TV show about a wrestling promotion than a wrestling show if that makes sense.

You kid, but there actually was a wrestling character called I.R.S., whose character was a tax auditor, and he would wrestle with the Million Dollar Man in a tag team named Money Inc.
I wasn't kidding lol. I remember there being an "IRS Man" but couldn't remember if he feuded with the million dollar man

This is coming from someone who is a professional wrestler on the independent scene since 2010. Yes, the storylines and endings are scripted. We also do not hate one another like what is shown on TV, (however, there can be legit heat between wrestlers backstage, but that's a completely different story). As far as it being fake with the moves, I always suggest those who doubt the impact they have on our bodies to do a tryout for one day. I haven't meet a trainee yet who hasn't puked and couldn't walk the next day. The moves are real and cause pain to our bodies after each match. When you see body slams or cloth-lines they indeed do hurt.
As for the fans knowing if the story is fake or not, it depends on the person. Some still believe it is real and act out like so. Then you have the fans who know what is going on, which we refer to as, "Smart Marks". These guys for the most part still watch because they enjoy it just like any other person would love their favorite tv show or soap opera.

I don't remember the rest of the questions asked by the OP, but I don't mind answering if anyone wants to know more.

I've watched wresting on and off since I was a little kid.

There's one question I still have:

Do the wrestlers participating in high profile matches rehearse the big spots?

For example - the monster RKO from the Rollins/Orton match at Wrestlemania 31. That seems like it required rehearsal to get the timing right.

But you never really see or hear about rehearsals taking place.

The really talented people don't really need to rehearse them. Just talk over how they want the match to go and what they want the finish to be. Although I don't doubt that they probably tried that spot at least once in private somewhere.

If you watch NXT women's matches, as good as they are, those are fully rehearsed over and over again.

Rehearsals for table and weapon spots don't occur to my knowledge. Rehearsing at all is actually pretty rare unless one of the wrestlers insist on laying everything out (as Randy Savage allegedly did) or one of the wrestlers has been out of the game for a bit.

Loved reading this thread. Helps so many people are very friendly too. Right now I'm in a phase where I've parted ways yet again with WWE, but I'll probably be back sooner than later lol.

So Vince McMahon - he's like an actual character in wrestling, right? As in, he is also a wrestler and fights other wrestlers? But there is an IRL Vince McMahon too? Are they the same actual actor? Does he actually own the WWE or is he just a fake owner type of thing?

Vince is everywhere.

If WWE has gotten too silly for you, I would suggest watching NXT if possible. It's their developmental organization but the shows hearken back to the old days where it's much more wrestling based than sports entertainment.

Certainly - they spend a lot of time with the big spots. Not all of them do, but those are usually serious killer badass wrasslers who have done it for long enough.

But big unsafe spots like that? Almost always rehearsed, because they're dangerous. As far as when, many hours before the show, and even days before as well.

Try Lucha Underground, New Japan, Ring of Honor, or NXT. Mainline Raw is awful right now...

It works when you don't take it so seriously.

I'd argue it works great when you do, too. My favorite moments in wrasslin' was when I thought it was all real, but it's kind of a different appreciation of it now.

Separate but equal.
