Fallout 4 - Reviews thread

Bethesda sent out Xbox One copies it seems. This has me worried about the PS4 version. Don't know if I should hold off or go PC.

Sad to see them mentioning that the combat is bad. I am so fed up with all these "massive world" games having shit for actual game play. Yes, yes, we can cope with it, but just for once I would like a game where the game play matched the ambitions of the world building.

Definitely. In their defence, these games started as RPGs, and an RPG is about the player-character and game-world first and foremost. But considering how many resources they pile into these games nowadays, you'd expect the actual gameplay to get fucking better in some way.

I go to MGSV, Dying Light and Assassin's Creed (to a far lesser extent) for my 'massive open world with good gameplay' fix.

Dying Light is probably the best example. If you haven't played it yet, fucking do so. Fantastic gameplay, huge game world, and many quests on par with Fallout's best (although the main quest shits the bed at the last hurdle).

It's happening.

If you keep giving Bethesda a pass they just won't improve. Reviewers should be hammering them for negative aspects, not well it's just what you should expect, have a 9/10

"This game I haven't played isn't as good as they say it is, they are giving them a pass."

~~~
My goodness, I woke up with a start being surprised at the scored.(That and...I couldn't go back to sleep, dang stomach issues.)
I'm extremely surprised at the scores, giving some of the scare topics this past week. Jim Sterling for sure I thought would go in tough, but it came out glowing. An interesting turn of events IMO. Can't wait!
That's cool,the problem is these exceptions only seem to exist for mostly bethsoft games. Other companies don't have that luxury.
All the time we all make exceptions for all sorts of things in games. While I appreciate consumers complaining, I honestly think we need a lot more of that, I find the idea that reviewers should go out of their way and give a game they have thoroughly enjoyed a lower score to somehow force change in the industry a bit weird.
I'm surprised that even someone like Sterling remains "ho-hum" about the technical issues in the game. He simply chalks it up to "Bethesda gonna Bethesda."
Like others have said, that won't light a fire under Bethesda's ass if they are allowed to get away with it.
It's very frustrating with the reviewers play these games a different way than I do, so it's kind of hard to probably judge if it's for me. None of the videos I've seen instill confidence.
I really want to play Fallout 4 but I have so many games on my backlog and I doubt by GTX 560 Ti can run this game smoothly anyway.
Please tell me not to get this.
So far about what's expected from most AAA game reviews. Now I'll just wait a week to hear how apparently the dialogue system, animation quality, voice acting, writing, performance etc. make for a bad experience in the long run after all.
I mean, maybe not. But I haven't taken these reviewers serous for years and thus I wouldn't be surprised (given what we already know about performance etc.).
Whoa, Destructoid out Polygoned, Polygon. Never thought I'd see the day.
I think that what happened here is that every site thought the other sites were going to tear to apart, so they gave it a 9 to stand out. But now we have a bunch of 9's everywhere and only destructoid keeping it real for the people.
If I remember correctly, some people in the other thread canceled their preorders of the PS4 version for a Xbox One copy. I hope you enjoy your 0fps :P :P j/k
Sorry, I couldn't resist. The thread yesterday was pure comedy gold.
Are people really surprised it's getting positive reviews? I have no affinity for the Bethesda style of open world and the dialogue tress make me whine for the 90s but come on, it was going to rake in high scores. I'll check it out through at some point. I probably won't care for it. It'll probably crash (hopefully after I actually get to move - looking at you NV) and bug out like no other, but I hope it transcends what I hated about 3 and I finally have a new Fallout game I can appreciate. I'll just give it a bit so the patches come out and the community can fix the other major jank.
LOL, at everyone who wants to love the game focusing on Destructoid and everyone who wants to hate it focusing on the overly positive. It really should be the other way around - although Destructoid's review isn't negative.
With the whole "stop buying broken games" crusade this year.
It's ridiculous to hear "maybe the sense of adventure and atmosphere makes up for the bugs" - no sorry, Bethesda doesn't get a free pass.
After nearly every AAA title this year was dragged over the coals for technical issues, this just highlights the double standards fanboys and reviewers give this company.
Glitchfest huh with major fps issues? Yeah, I'll pass.
Bethesda needs to clean up their act. With open-world games like Witcher 3 out there raising the bar, there is no excuse for Bethesda to deliver F4 looking like and playing like poo.
Yeah cos witcher 3 had no issues...
This is sounding more and more like the typical Bethesda situation:
At launch: 7/10
After a couple of years of the mod community doing their thing: 11/10
If youre on the fence then this is the best thing to do.
Where is your .jpeg of a pegboard with red thread showing me all of the circumstantial evidence you've amassed after 40 minutes?
God damn, some of those 8/10 just saying it's similar to Fallout 3.
Which is a valid reason to change the score. But for me it's like saying 'con: a little to much like you're favorite game ever.'
I think I'm in for a treat. :)
Ah shit, if only I knew in advance that I could have simplified my checklist and saved myself like two minutes.
Great scores.
Can't wait to dive in.
I still get a chuckle when people suggest the game looks like s**t though. You guys wouldn't have lasted a minute in the 2600/Intellivision generation.
PCWorld
This isn’t the step forward I expected, though. Here we are, the first Bethesda game on a new hardware generation, and I can’t help feeling like we’ve regressed—like Fallout 4 really is Oblivion-with-guns. A decade later, it certainly makes many of the same mistakes.
7/10
As expected all the reviews fall into line and dish out the 9 and 10s. Wouldnt want to upset the publisher.
Most reviews ive read talk of bad animations (apparently its nostalgic because it reminds us of skyrim wtf) , inconsistent gfx , speechs that end in the middle (most brush it if off with just enable subtitles), characters stuck in mid air etc, the usual jank , but none seem to effect its final score.
Not really unvested in fallout at all (though was keen to maybe jump in now ) , but sounds like all the stuff that has out me off in the past is still here (most of it engine related)
True that some bugs are to be expected for a game thise size, but the amount of criticisms dont seem to reflect the final score
Any of the reviews touch more in depth on story and characters, specifically compared to Fallout 3?
I thought Fallout 3s story and characters were hot trash and would probably skip this for a bit if this game is about par with that.
I think that what happened here is that every site liked the game enough to give it a nine, but the reviewer at destructoid only liked it enough to give it a 7.
Need a bingo card for all the crow served
What crow? Folks said it doesn't look that good, it doesn't. Some said there are technical issues, reading the DF thread, there most definitely are as well. It was very rare that someone said the gameplay wouldn't be fun.
Metro Gamecentral gave it 8/10:
http://metro.co.uk/2015/11/09/fallout-4-review-war-really-doesnt-change-5488951/
In Short: Its technical faults and lack of innovation are frustrating, but the game underneath is as enthralling and compulsive as anything Bethesda has ever made.
Pros: An amazingly detailed game world, with a secret and surprise around every corner. Excellent upgrade system, crafting, and good variety of companions. Interesting base-building.
Cons: Technically unimpressive, especially in terms of character graphics and frustrating load times. Almost no new ideas. Dialogue and set pieces are often handled clumsily.
Pretty much everything you’ve seen impact Bethesda games of the past can be seen here, from a handful of potential quest bugs to wacky A.I. pathfinding and a number of physics-based anomalies. I’m also not sure whether or not an early story mission become unbeatable on a test file, because I’m sure the raiders I needed to kill weren’t spawning.
Fallout 4 is not worse then prior Fallout or Elder Scrolls games when it comes to thinks being borked, but it’s certainly not better, and you’ll have to bear that in mind. I advise autosaving regularly, just in case.
Bethesda’s always gotten some leeway with its quality control, mostly due to huge expansive its games are, and Fallout 4 is certainly of a high enough quality overall to where I find myself more forgiving than I otherwise would be.
This is more of what my post was referring to. It's a shame that we sort of shrug our shoulders when Bethesday pulls this crap, but we lambaste developers like CD Project when the Witcher 3 dips to 20 FPS in one single area of the game. The dichotomy is just very, very evident.
