Digital Foundry Performance Analysis: Fallout 4

This is so bad lol. How the fuck does a 300$ pc look decades better at a much better fps? This has to be horrible optimization , there's literally no other excuse and ps4 guys this is no win idk why you guys are so happy this is unbearably bad performance. All I can say is thankfully I have a PC with a 970.

Wow, the amount of detail that is added to the buildings on the left is gigantic.

There's even a boat that wasn't there on the in-game "Ultra"
Yeah, uGridsToLoad has always made an absolutely massive difference in Bethesda games.

They've never exposed it as an in-game setting though, probably because the usual suspects would try to "MAXX" it and complain about getting 15 FPS.

Well fuck, I guess I should get a PS4 then, my PC can't run new games on ultra.

Come on now. I was just speaking from a personal perspective. I have been meaning to invest in PC for at least four years and I don't want to cheap out on it. The jump has to be big enough to make me realize that PC was worth it, which I know it is.

And some people yesterday were sure that the XB1 version would be better than PS4...emmmm

PS4 will always have the better performing multiplatform releases, anyone that says otherwise . . . I want some of what they've been smoking.

What I find amusing is the cheer leading of people who are delighted in the way that the Xbox performs here. That's a little weird. Boom!

Yeah, the performance issues I said I was starting to experience have gotten worse the more I've played. Definitely starting to affect my enjoyment of the gameplay as I can't aim for shit when the frames start dropping. Think I'm gonna shelve it for now and wait for a patch.

I would be mad, both at the issues and at myself for pre-ordering, but I have TW3 to start. So I don't really care too much (despite loving what I played).

How many hours are you in exactly ?

Honestly, I don't think it's fair to compare the PS4 and i3/750 Ti in this game. The console versions seem to be horribly optimized and this almost seems like comparing both machines in Batman Arkham Knight. Just my point of view on it. Not denying that the i3/750 Ti set up can match the PS4 in many multiplatform games.

WTF at those frame rates on the consoles, that shit is beyond bad.
At times one runs like its swimming in water, the other has a pause in its frame rate?
........Thats some damn awful game development.

Going to be very cautious about getting the PC version, will wait a few weeks to get an overall feel of what gamers say about it. This is why I hate modern gaming now, everything needs to be patched from here to the moon.

The PC requirements are weird. 550TI, which is a 600Gflop card, or a 7870, which is near 2Tflops and 2-3x the performance of the 550TI. I'm left wondering what hardware level you need.

The DF 750TI seems to be bearable, but up at 1.7Gflops, rather than the minimum 550TI...All weird.

Regarding the consoles...It's going to feel like a looong generation.

Man, you use a lot of funny technicular words that don't even meen anything. Just get the PC that costs $300!

Ugh, was considering getting this on xbox but I'll wait for now. Hopefully they can patch out the worst of it. Bethesda really needs to get their shit together on the tech side.

I really cannot tell how many of you are seriously looking at the "0 fps" as a framerate drop, or just using this as an opportunity to poke fun at the Xbox One.

It's very obviously a brief hitch or bug (as Y2Kev suggested above). I'm sure this happens in all versions, because it is Bethesda. It just happened to occur in on the One for the DF analysis. I saw the very same kinds of hitches in the PS4 version from the leaked footage this weekend.

PS3 suffered a similar bug in FO3 that was never patched. Eventually as your save file grew, it would hard freeze the game for 4-5 min before struggling back. Beating the game like that was a chore.

Not saying its exactly the same, but it is a worry with Bethesdas history. Gamebryo is TERRIBLE with memory management and item tracking in the save file. ESRam pool can't be helping.

Honestly, it appears they still haven't ironed out engine issues on both consoles. Even with a mote favoritible dev platform.

Xbox One looks to deliver the ultimate immersive experience, giving the player more time per second, to take in the beautiful vistas. PC version and on the PS4, don't allow you to take in the serendipitous scenery as easily.

That 0fps looks like back when I was a kid and played PC games on a mediocre computer. I just called it extended stutter.

Seems like a glitch. There's no reason for this to hit this hard. Sorry to the Xbox crowd. Don't let it ruin your game. It'll be fixed I'm sure.

PC version FTW and I haven't even played Fallout 3 (must run like butter smooth in my new PC) which I plan to buy digitally today. I have to say that for an AAA game like this, releasing like that on consoles is a joke, especially when the consoles have some sort of parity on the HW end. When you pay for a game, you also pay for the fact that they work their ass out to polish the technical end, I think.

I am so happy that I have a gaming habit of playing games (especially huge rpg's) pretty late. Played a pretty good version of Bloodborne and am planning to dive into Witcher 3 this week (yay patch 1.10!!!). FO4 seems in somewhat of a decent state already, well... atleast on PS4. Hopefully they can brush it up a bit more by the time I play this in 6 or so months.

And people were like "I'm switching from PS4 to XB1!!" or suggesting so confidently that the XB1 will run it better, and what did they based it on? nothing, just a hunch and a random video from both versions, maybe next time people will stop jumping to conclusions.

Still, it's not like the PS4 version is OK, far from it, I will wait until Bethesda will sort this shit out.

The more things change .. the more they stay the same..

The thing with PS3 Skyrim is you needed a 60+ hour save to see the effects. Xbone owners hit 0fps right from the start.

Bethesda has some explaining to do, especially after all those tweets about a "solid" 30fps and not noticing any framerate issues. Pete Hines is either shielded from what the game really looks like or he's just flat-out lying.

If one company does not deserve that trust it's Bethesda.

And all the Xbox-bashing aside, it's not like the PS4 version is great either. Sub-30fps is at the very least a sign of shitty design and putting too much load on hardware that has been known for almost three years now. More likely, it's due to Bethesda simply not giving a damn and using a potato engine, because the game will sell anyway. Why put more resources into engine development when it doesn't yield any profit.

I have a PC...If the bottom line is the 550TI, I'm more than fine. If it's the 7870, I'm not. That's not too, uh, technicular...

So the system reqs are weird because there's a 2-3x performance spread on the minimum requirement.

This has me wondering if a HDD swap in the PS4 might improve things.

According to DF the PS4 version has a slight advantage overall, but the Xbox version does hold up better in some areas. Not too big of a difference overall besides a few small occurances here and there. Seems like it's going to be a very similar experience on either console.
