Digital Foundry: Hands-on with PS4's PlayStation 2 emulation

Love statements like that! As far as i know PSNOW is not discontinued and disc support is impossible, since you are streaming games from a PS3 data farm!

With that said PSX will be glorious, all the game announcements + PS1/PS2 BC>E3 2015!

I still don't see why they can't unlock PSnow games that you already own digitally.

So...so which is it?

Resolution generally refers to dimensions in this context. So a 1080p resolution is 1920x1080 pixels.

If I say I have a 4x5 rectangle, and I say I want you to double it's dimensions, you have an 8x10 rectangle. You don't calculate the area, then double the area, and recalculate the dimensions based on that.

So if I say double the resolution, you double the dimensions, resulting in 4 times the area (pixel count).

by disc support they mean, popping in the disc gives you unlimited access to stream it, which just isn't practical

I meant both ways! I wish PS4 could do proper PS3 emulation but sadly enough it just not possible and even though I have a 200mbp/s internet, i find the minimal lag when playing through PSNOW unbearable.

sony europe will find a way to release some of the fucked up pal versions (50 hz, borders, slower speed/music)...

I'm speculating here, but i think maintaining the PS3 farm is not cheap, hence if they do it they will loose a lot of money. After all Sony is a company and they are in to make cash.

Okay, that actually makes sense. It needs to be a pay-per-play system or it's unsustainable.

That is not correct. Resolution refers to the dimension in each direction. In your example it would be 4*2x5*2, which again would be 4x the resolution.

-so it was emulation after all? Yes!

-oh man, I can't wait to share play Crash team racing with versus mode. Hnggg.

-people seem to forget that Sony had plans to roll out PS now on tablets/phones, more Smart TVs, and I believe they mentioned to on outlet that they have plans for PCs too. I can't remember who.. But yeah. They have those markets they can try getting. The question is how will they be able attract those people?

When these titles were announced in that topic a bunch of us guessed that it might be emulation and that Sony were using that patent they had on bringing trophies to older titles, good to see it is essentially confirmed.

Hopefully we can download the PS1/2 purchases we've already made through the PSN store for free.

It would be pretty retarded of Sony to buy the same PS1/PS2 games for each platform individually.

When you buy a PS1 game on PSN, you can play it on PS3, PSP, PS Vita and PS TV. You didn't have to buy it for each of these systems separately.
I imagine it will be the case for PS2 games aswell. Buy on PSN, play on PS3 and PS4 (with limited support on PS3, since PS4 is probably capable of emulating more games than PS3).

So would this emulator run with all PS2-games? Or at least with all that are available for PS3 in PlayStation store.

What about games as Need for Speed: Underground that used the vector units of the console?

You would think so, but then there's the Virtual Console :/

Wait. WAT. This is HUGE. <3 I gave my PS2 away to my niece years ago but I kept my games. Can't wait for this.

Is it only digital, or are discs supported too?

i'm gonna make a guess and say that they'll rollout titles in groups instead of a slew of games at a time

i'd rather it be a big group though, can play all those ps2 smt games i bought again lol

....

This here is Sony, not Nintendo. People should stop fearmongering.
You have to buy a PS1 game only one time to play it on multiple systems and I'm sure the same will go for PS2 games as well.

But I would rather prefer disc based support. Lots of smaller and forgotten niche games I can't see Sony licensing.

Sony has been the king of remasters and psnow. They just love people purchasing the same games over and over

And there is a huge difference between PS Now and remasters. Show me where Sony has offered digital PS1 and PS2 titles, had you buy them on one system, then made you re-buy them on another supported system.

You could transfer your digital DSi purchases to the 3DS, and your Wii purchases to the Wii U, so I would disagree with that.
Then if you wanted to get the Wii U version of a digital title, you only had to pay a little bit more if you already owned the game iirc.

If I buy an NES game on my Wii, can I play it on my Wii U or my 3DS? Not without re-buying it, no. That isn't the case with Sony's digital retro offerings when it comes to gaming platforms that support playback of such games. (Though I can't remember for certain if, when playing them on Android, you were able to freely download purchases you'd already made through PSN.)

Paying a "little bit" is still having to pay for something you already bought.

The Xbox One emulates disc-based games. Uses Disc ID to confirm you actually own the game and only requires that you to keep the disc in the console when playing it off the HDD.

So, Sony... it's your turn.

I wonder why they're doing this, especially since they have PS Now.

Don't get me wrong, PS Now bites, but they did tout it pretty heavily. I guess those $10 hits from 13 year old disc images are too nice to ignore.

Wouldn't offering disc-based emulation for PS1 games require Sony to pay a CD license fee on every console?

If so, and if it ever happens, I'd think it would be opt-in or even a one-time fee to enable. I'd think that would be a huge cost to incur for something they'd make no money from.

Good if it works like it should as this is relevant to my interests but what the hell was with that hold-up? Oh and PSP emulation pls.

The question then would be, full catalog level support like on ps2 and ps3 or just case by case ala xb1.

I could see either depending on the nature of the emulator.

Trophies are the only reason this sounds cool to me, though I'm apprehensive about how they'll be implemented. If it uses an automatic algorithm like their patent suggested, the trophies could feel very poor & tacked on. Either way, better than nothing I suppose.

CD license fee for what? The patents expired over a decade ago and Sony owned half of them in the first place. And afaik PS1 games aren't technically Redbook Audio CDs even if they have CD audio tracks, so they probably wouldn't even need to pay for the CD logo.

Question-- How did apparently no one notice this in the past 2 days since release? Even a single GAF member running into the emulation prompts would have raised alarms all over the place.

Everybody noticed, but very few people took these considerations seriously until DF did an analysis.
