Sony confirms PS2 emulation coming to PS4

Its like they just want to make money off of us. Sometimes i question sony's committment to us gamers.

Theyre really risking their good will and gamer culture wont look on them fondly in the future.

I don't even think that's a reasonable opinion. A few months ago we didn't even think emu was happening to begin with. So getting to play my PS1 and PS2 games on my PS4 i don't think is something that they are somehow bad for.

It's like this multi billion dollar corporation literally only exists to make money off its consumers.

I want them to tuck me in at night. Not spend tons of money making games seemingly with better resolution, framerate, and trophies in the wrapper, then having the gall to charge me the cost of a latte or burrito (without the guac, thats extra) for a prettier version of a game I always wanted to play.

Not disputing your assessment, because you are more than likely right...

But also avatars and a few other features also was not present at launch, that came later.

I can only hope this happens. I own like 25+ PS2 classics on PS3 and like 30 PS1 classics...just having them transfer to PS4 with res upgrades and the like for free would be just amazing...and hopefully then PSP at some point

Then they'd have a super functioning classics ecosystem between Vita, PS3 and PS4...

Sony just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about emulation culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in remasters where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Backwards Compatibility, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the Sony fans, after hearing about this, are not going to want to purchase any PS2 game for the system, nor will they purchase any physical games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Sony has alienated an entire market with this move.

Sony, publicly apologize and give us disc based emulation or you can kiss your business goodbye.

PS1 emulation:

PSP - patched in later
PS3 - patched in later (digital titles from the PS Store, discs supported from get-go)
PSV - patched in later
PS4 - ???

I don't think that's a reasonable conclusion to make.

Was there any proof that it was the PC port & not just the PSX game recompiled to run in HD on PS4?

Wasn't the audio a different(inferior) format before it was later patched on PC?

edit; mis-read your post, thought you were asking if the PC port was a recompiled PS1 port, my bad.

thats the thing. They got there by being cool bros and now theyre pulling a bait and switch on us, which im pretty sure is illegal, but theyll prob get away with it cause theres no justice in this world

Isn't the I/O controller on the PS2 a PS1 chip? What would keep them from also offering PS1 support also?

The leaked info said both PS1 & PS2 games was coming to PS4 re-rendered in HD with trophies. now we know the leak was real because of the Star Wars games. Also I have a feeling this is also the case for FFVII.

They were never your "cool bros" they were just guys in suits who paid a marketing team lots of money to make it seem that way.

Also dafuq? @ "bait and switch" and "illegal". Over ps2 re-releases for ps4?

Literally what on earth are you on about?

Also spoiler alert:
EVERY company wants to make money from you, that's the point of a business - to make money.

Some go about it in a nice way, but the ultimate goal is to make money from consumers. That doesn't make them evil, it's a business.

You know that thing where the thumbnail for a game in the PSN store sometimes shows a different game? Maybe it is nothing but I have only ever seen the glitch for games available on the platform the glitch is on. This is on PS4.

Programming emulators involves all sorts of hackery and detail-cutting. I honestly don't know how exactly PS2 handles PS1 BC, but what I know is that PS1 CPU is actually not present on later PS2 units, its functions taken by something else. This means it was meant to execute fixed code, and thus emulator writers, if not caring for aforementioned titles, could just write code that emulates what the chip is supposed to do, and not the fact that it is CPU executing code (similarly to CPU emulator part not having to care about particular transistors doing stuff).

Though honestly, they have a PS1 emulator running on everything else, so it probably would be just a business decision.

So do you put in PS2 discs?

as of this time NO DETAILS are confirmed aside form that which Digital Foundry were able to work out

as of right now, just popping in a disc is meaningless

We don't know about the future of Discs, though it seems unlikely, and we have no idea if our current classics will carry over.

All we can do is wait and see, probably PSX is when we will know for sure

Makes sense, i'd expect the first batch to have all a bunch of atlus games.

Damn... Really don't want to purchase Any of the Persona's over again for a third + time...

This is clearly what Final Fantasy 7 on PS4 was going to be but the backlash from people who wanted a remake was too big.

You really think Square Enix decided to remake FFVII because of the backlash over the PC port?

Was there any proof that it was the PC port & not just the PSX game recompiled to run in HD on PS4?

They called it a port, that's all the confirmation we need. Also, there's no recompiling non-existent source code.

Holy shit.

Since this was made official already, I am most curious about the ins and outs of it:

-Will we get disc support? (Unlikely imo due to the alleged upscaling and trophy support, dunno if they can make that work on disc-based content) Honestly, I'm not that crazy about this so I'm good.

-WHEN? We know it's happening, we know the SW games are already out there, but when will we get the initial first bunch of titles? Hopefully "available at the end of this presentation"

-HOW MANY? How extensive will the initial lineup be (if there's one to begin with)? I am super curious to see how they will present this on stage (because they totally will)

-HOW MUCH? How expensive will the titles be on average? The only way they could kill such a wonderful revisiting of the top-notch PS2 library is by overpricing it, so I hope they are fair enough.

-PSOne? Will it get the same treatment? If so, I could die on December 5th lol

-Extra features: so far we assume graphic touch-ups and trophy support are in order but, could there be anything else in store?

-VITA (LOL): is the Vita getting any kind of access to this PS2/PSOne(?) library other than Remote Play? (I know the answer is no but I love my legacy console so I include the question as honorary mention xD)

The possibilities this new branch provides are getting me very excited about PSX, I hope they give this the stage time and treatment it deserves (not too much, but make it look cool lol)

Zero relevance/correlation. When you are launching firmware to millions, it makes sense to streamline it and strip it down to the bare minimum. Every added feature is a point of failure, and firmware that crashes on launch can cause a tidal wave of negative press.

Furthermore, there are secondary issues created by providing launch buyers their ps1/ps2 classics on launch:
1) The store and library apps must be more robust and have more features to support classic games.
2) Populating libraries at launch with pre-bought games may lower launch software sales.

OR....
You leave the feature out at launch.
You now:
1) Simplify launch store and library apps.
2) Reduce points of failure at launch
3) Reduce stress of perfecting emulation for launch
4) Get the added benefit/goodwill of 'surprising' everyone at some future date of your choosing (such as this upcoming PSX event).

Cool bros? They always were suits, and it still shows.

Boyes referring to new Destiny weapons or powerups as "delicious" at E3 was a ridiculous cringe-inducing moment. All I care about is that they work hard to provide me with a good product.

Whenever they do a bait and switch (like they did with the Bloodborne DLC price in Europe), then they lose my money. Calling that illegal is a bit far-fetched though.

No I think the reason we haven't heard much more about it is because of the backlash.

Holy shit.

Technically recompiling PS1/PS2 games to be playable on PS4 in HD with trophies make them ports.

It was an obvious joke post

They've announced as much as they needed to. The iOS port's already out and it got far less fanfare than the PS4 port.

No it doesn't and I have no idea where you've gotten this "recompiling" theory from. Creating a wrapper doesn't require them to recompile the entire game and if it did, we'd never see FFVII because Square Enix doesn't have the source code anymore.

it's not recompiling tho, is it? the patent states flags marked and read from the disk after certain things are met. no recompiling necessary.

The code is going to be recompiled one way or another. it's either going to be done on the PS4 or they are going to recompile it before they upload it to PSN.
