Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Hey Gaf!

After some time without a TV i'm quite confused and overwhelmed what to buy.
Im from germany so it adds to the confusion that we apperently get different tvs and different sizes of the same line have different pannels. Somehow its really hard to get a good grasp of whats what.
I'm gonna use it mostly for gaming with my Ps4 and PC. Also im gonna watch Netflix and other streaming content on it. I wont use it as a traditional TV.

What i want from the TV:
-good colors and good blacks
-it will be often used in dark conditions, so as less lightbleed as possible
-input lag should be within reason, but im not super concerned about that

what i dont care about:
-remote
-optics
-apps
-the menu

My budget is around 700€. Im fine with 40".

So from my googleing around i basicly found 3 sets that somewhat seem to fit the bill:

So does it make sense for me to go for an entry level 4k display or is the sony hd better in terms of picture quality?
And whats the deal with 4x4 mapping or something like it :)?? Its needed/recommended if i use it as a pc monitor ? How do i find out which tvsupports this/has this?

Just bought a XBR65X850C from BB. Anyone know how good it is for gaming? I know its not the best TV but I got a great discount on it making it the best bang for my buck.

What kind of GPU do you use? Can it even display 4K at 60Hz?

Ditch the Panasonic, the input lag is to high compared to the other ones.
The Sony at 43" is probably a IPS Panel so black levels won't be as good.
To make things easier just write me a PM in german. ;-)

Just an update for everyone, Best Buy (and everyone else) just dropped the 75" x940c to $5,999 and the Samsung 78" 9500 to $8,999. Both getting 1k price drops (they list it as a sale but its not, Sony and Samsung both sent out official notices that the MSRP has been lowered).

$6k for one of the best screens on the market, FALD and HDR support, full 4k@60 4:4:4 and 1080p@120hz 4:4:4 is a steal.
 
So, I've been keeping my eye on the Samsung JU7500 (21ms lag) and the JS9000 (24ms lag), trying to decide which one I would want. I don't play a lot of shooters online but I do play a lot of video pinball and any perceivable input lag is very annoying with those games so that basically removes OLED from contention this year. I was leaning toward the 9000 until today, because there was only a $500 difference between them. However, Best Buy lowered the price on the 7500 (55" $1299, 65" $1799) and now there is a whopping $1200 difference between the 65" models. I'm seriously considering just getting the 65" JU7500 and saving that money for a good OLED in a few years when the tech is faster/more mature. I know the 9000 supports HDR, but no console game will support that for years, right? I also know the 9000 is more upgradable but I have a feeling if I upgrade it will be to an OLED and not a band-aid on crappy LCD technology. So is the 9000 worth $1200 more if the TV is mostly for gaming?

My budget is pretty flexible, which is why I figure "Bite the bullet" and get the best TV I can now, so a few years from now with 4K Bluray I'm already set. I've been leaning towards the 9000 for this reason. With the sale on the 7500 however, it's hard to ignore.

My living room space really only allows for a 55" TV. Is HDR and wide color going to be worth the price difference paid now if it means I don't need to replace this TV for that much longer?

I should say too I do want something with an input lag of 30ms or faster.

You already answered the question yourself, the 9000 isn't even FALD so no I wouldn't spend more on it. And by the time the next console generation is coming out, there will be hopefully TVs that supports all the new standards.

If HDR is important to you, there are only 2 options available Sony x940c and Samsung 9500, everything else doesn't have enough nits output to generate an adequate contrast. The Samsung J7500 should work fine till HDR is mainstream. If you're not in a hurry you could also wait for next year and hope there will be a more affordable HDR set available.

But if something has dolbyvision it will also have the metadata for HDR10 anyways so you can still have HDR.

That would be the more immediate things that could change.

Once that is all established the only thing left would be a higher bit panel. So I mean...there are always improvements to be made, but for what you can get now with the EF. That's pretty damn close.

IF your horizon is 6 months, the only thing I see possible would be dolby vision and wider gamut..but you said 3 years...so yeah in 3 years time in technology. Yeah lots will change.

With consumer electronics there is ALWAYS going to be something better. If there wasn't they wouldn't be able to sale anything because there would be no reason to get anything new.

If LG doesn't one up their own product, someone else will. It's always like that.

When Panasonic made the VT30, the Sharp Elite came along, after the Sharp Elite came, the VT50 came out, after that the ZT and F8500's came out. So something being outclassed is just what happens. Hell even with Kuros, the newest one was always better then the previous model.

The only thing imho that would be worth waiting for would probably be BFI (black frame insertion) and full coverage of DCI/P3 if I were on the fence, but I personally don't believe full 100% coverage of DCI/P3 will happen this coming year. I would say 2017 at the earliest. BFI could happen though I just don't think it will happen personally. CES is in January so you could wait and see what is announced then.

Don't think anyone knows whats coming in 3 years so no way to accurately say.

Its at about 88% DCI/P3 already. Next steps would be full 100% DCI/P3, and then full Rec.2020, I don't think anything is even mastered in Rec.2020 though everything is mastered in DCI/P3 iirc.

It will be able to display it but you wouldn't get the full gamut. So not sure how you want to take that lol.

I think what people need to understand is these are consumer electronics. If a change to HDMI spec is made for example and they make a 2.0c that has x bandwidth, and this new feature is added and 2.0a doesn't have the bandwidth to support it, you're not going to get it. You are limited to the capabilities of the hardware in the unit. If you are worried about buying something that is going to be outdated, then I'm not sure how anyone buys anything.

Anyone that buys new iPhones, Droids, Macbooks, PC's, cars, TV, stereo equipment...guess what. Same time next year its outdated, thats if you buy it when it comes out. If you buy it 6 months before the new model line, you got 6 months before its out dated.

The only thing I could suggest is look at what the specs are for UHD Blu ray, for audio and video. Figure out if you want/need whats in the specs, see what equipment meets those specs.

My time line is 1 year, MAYBE 2. I really hope 60" 4K OLED is affordable with HDR and wide gamut colors. I have a Panasonic Plasma from 6 years ago that still beats my Samsung high end LED from 2 years ago.

Can I make a recommendation for you?

I have had the ju7500 and js9000, the 65 inch ju7500 actually has 17ms of input lag ( displaylag shows this ) and the ju7500 is backlit not edge lit whereas the js9000 is exgelit.

I would 100% go 65ju7500, you wont regret it!!

The js9000 isnt worth the large price difference and the one connect box is fairly loud ( louder then a xb1). The picture quality between the two wasnt large at all.

Just make sure to put game mode on and lower sharpness to 0, color to warm 2, backlight at 10-12 :)

Why does everyone say warm2? I tried it and my picture looked un-naturally red and I didn't like it. Standard looked better to me.
 
Does anyone know of a 70 or 75 inch TV with low input lag and no backlight bleed? 1080p is fine.

I just really can't stand backlight bleed, it drives me nuts!

Currently in the living room I have a 720p gaming projector which I bought almost 3 years ago. At the time I was wanting a 70 inch TV but everyone I brought home had horrid backlight bleed. I tried 4 different TVs too. I am slightly terrified of going through that buy and return nightmare again.

There seems to be some dodgy one connect boxes floating around, mine is so quiet! Guess I was lucky maybe.
 
Recently i was told that the higher you set the OLED Light setting on the EC9300, the shorter the overall lifetime it will be.

What is true about this? I do have this set at like 90 or 100.

Thing is, right now i have a VERY dark living room (i did that two years ago for my projector which i ended up not using a lot) it's basically dark purple all around in my living room. I am planning on painting these walls sometime, in a much brighter colour. Maybe then i can lower OLED Light.
 
Hmm, New firmware for the LG EF9500, and people are saying the 24p/motion issues are gone. Only problem is it's the "beta" firmware, have to DL from the Korean website. Think I'll wait.
 
Now I'm stuck going back and forth between the 55" JU7500 and a 60" JU7100. Both seem great, and the space will allow for the slightly bigger picture, but just barely. At only a $100 difference it's tough!

While the 7500 is slightly better in terms of technical picture quality, this gain will likely be lost in its practical application. I went with the 7100 myself.
 
Seems to be a lot of discussion about high end models but any recommendation for budget ones?

I have around 500 eur and want a TV for movies, tv shows, ps3, ps4 etc. I'm not looking for anything spectacular in terms of features but just want a good picture. Any recommendation or just list of things to look for and out for when selecting new tv? Don't wanna buy random shitty one either. This will be for my new home that I'm still refurbishing (in another city) and money's tight so buying some huge ass expensive tv is not high on my list of priorities, but I do need a good one and I won't be changing it for a while.

You won't find anything like that, though I guess direct LED or FALD are better than edge LED TVs concerning this matter.

The bigger the LED TV, the more likely it is to have uniformity issues. Backlight uniformity issues don't increase over time unless a large amount of stress is put upon the panel (like a big temperature swing, or moving it).

Q: I'm on my 13th TV due to these uniformity issues. I have been changing them for the last three years. Now I'm getting tired of it and was wondering whether these lists of TVs will be updated and carried on, because without you I cannot find out what a TV is really like for uniformity, as people on forums and most reviews say they are fine, when I know hardly any LED TVs have brilliant backlights. I know due to trying all manufacturers top and mid-range TVs with pics to prove how bad the backlight bleed and banding/dse were. They really were absolutely not acceptable, so please carry on your excellent work!
A: Thanks for the feedback. All LED TVs have this problem, as you mentioned, to various degrees. That is why videophiles and picky customers opt for plasma TVs instead. It is fine for the average customer, but as soon as you start to look for these problems you will find them everywhere.

Also starting this week are the black friday sales, so I'm sure you'll find something nice for the money. It couldn't hurt though to expand the budget to 700 Euros for a bigger picture.
 
Seriously considering a 60" Samsung JS7000 for gaming while best buy has it up for $1,300. Anyone have experience or a second opinion on other sets?

I know it doesn't do 24p, but that isn't a huge deal for me.

-edit- I guess the 65" JU7100 might wind up being a better buy for general use.

It's one of the few IPS based models from Samsung meaning great color and viewing angles but not so great black levels and contrast, if you watch a lot of content in the dark it ain't the best set for you.

Yes, the U7100 would be the better choice.
 
I know everyone is all about bigger is better now... and you can't go too big... etc... but I don't really agree... But I really feel like the JU7500 48" is the perfect size for me for gaming in my gaming room. Love it. It is so beautiful to play in game mode, coming from my old plasma.

I have to correct myself about the 60" J7000.

The 60" version of the JS7000 has a VA panel so it would get a better 'Picture' score with better blacks and contrast. The Sony X850C should still be better overall, but due to the price difference, if the small judder in movies doesn't bother you, the JS7000 is a good cheaper alternative.

Yes I personally liked the curved screen. Not sure if it does anything, but I like it for irrational reasons. It does feel more immersive than my old flat 50" plasma to me.

So if you watch a 1080p movie on Showtime or HBO then game mode looks noticeably worse (in the small details) than movie mode, but the picture is still looking very nice in game mode.

But if you play an FPS shooter I fully notice a huge improvement in responsiveness in game mode over movie mode and over my old flat 50" plasma, it feels very fluid in game mode.

Welp, I decided to pull the trigger on the 65" JU7500. Unfortunately, they all sold out yesterday. I mean, Best Buy had them in just about every location early yesterday and now they are all gone. I can't even order one for pickup because "We''re sorry, this item is no longer available to be shipped to the store you selected."

I COULD order one from Amazon but I am very hesitant to do that because of the panel lottery. Now, this isn't something we've discussed much lately in this thread, but when you buy a particular model of Samsung, it is often the case that they source the actual LCD panels from different manufacturers, and some of them are most definitely better than others. So it's wise to check the box before purchase and make sure you are getting a Samsung panel and not one of the crappy third-party ones. However, if you order online, there is no way to do that whatsoever. I was really wanting to check the boxes at the physical store before purchasing.

Ah well, a few more months with my ancient rear-projection TV, I guess.

Sorry about that... so How do you check the box or the TV to determine whether or not you got a Samsung Panel? I would like to do this with my JU7500 (even though I can't and wouldn't return it)?

On your box (or on the back of your set, probably), there is a sticker that contains some information. I've included a blurry example below. See where it says "Version TS02"? That's the panel that is inside the TV in the box. Your sticker may not be laid out exactly the same way but there should be a code like that on there. The codes are usually in that format. TH01, TS01, AU01, IH01, etc. The number may be 1, 2, 3, etc. but the first two letters tell you who the manufacturer is.

TH or TS: Samsung
HS: Sharp
AU: Au Optronics
CH or CM or CS: Chi Mea
IS: Innolux

It's generally believed that the Samsung panels are the best, with the others ranging from slightly worse to much worse in comparison. Doesn't mean you will get a bad set, just that it might not be as good as it could have been.

On your box (or on the back of your set, probably), there is a sticker that contains some information. I've included a blurry example below. See where it says "Version TS02"? That's the panel that is inside the TV in the box. Your sticker may not be laid out exactly the same way but there should be a code like that on there. The codes are usually in that format. TH01, TS01, AU01, IH01, etc. The number may be 1, 2, 3, etc. but the first two letters tell you who the manufacturer is.

TH or TS: Samsung
HS: Sharp
AU: Au Optronics
CH or CM or CS: Chi Mea
IS: Innolux

It's generally believed that the Samsung panels are the best, with the others ranging from slightly worse to much worse in comparison. Doesn't mean you will get a bad set, just that it might not be as good as it could have been.

Also starting this week are the black friday sales, so I'm sure you'll find something nice for the money. It couldn't hurt though to expand the budget to 700 Euros for a bigger picture.

Someone told me to look out for last year's sony W700 series, that it has amazing latency etc but current one got worse.
I'm looking for at least 40", I mean more the merrier but I know my budget is limited. Doesn't help that my dad is helping me furbish the house and he's more along the line: buy tv for 100 eur, all quality is the same, use it for next 20 years. We literally had a sony trinitron from 90s as our MAIN tv until like 2 years ago lol... So yeah I just wanna get the best thing I can for as little money I can. It's a small apartment too so huge tv even if I had money wouldn't be ideal, plus investing there isn't ideal because I'm not HUGE console gamer (more so on PC) and I live there for maybe half a year per year and that's only for next 2, dunno about after, maybe we'll rent the place out so yeah... Just want a good tv for now :)

P.S. No black friday here (Serbia, but I'm in Montenegro atm my home country)

Yeah, I've heard that this lack of uniformity on white screen is even a bit more of a problem on their 4K OLED screens than it was on their 1080p screens, where it also existed to a varying degree as a luck of a draw. I was lucky that it was absolutely minimal, nearly invisible on mine (1080p model).

My suggestion is, go to a store with a test material (including white screen obviously) and see if the effect is lesser on their demo TV. I always assumed they use hand picked models for display, as they never have dead pixels or anything obvious. If the problem on it is significantly lesser, exchange it. But again, it's a luck of a draw in how intense the problem will appear, and I believe every of their panels has it to some degree. And also you may end up with another one with a bigger or different problem (dead pixels etc)

I have no idea about the retailer situation where you live right now, it's not easy to get Sony last year B models for a good price. But the lag input ain't that bad for the 2015 C models. So whatever is in available and within your budget should work out fine for you.

Pretty crazy that plasmas are dead. I snagged an open box Samsung F8500 last January for $980. I could probably sell it for twice as much on eBay.
