Sony confirms PS2 emulation coming to PS4

Honestly this is an interesting criterion. No one did as long as I'm aware, but this doesn't sound like something particularly hard to do, depending on "trophy quality" ("advance to level 7" would be easier than "juggle 5 mooks on one savefile"). If someone did that to prove you wrong (and maybe add a trophy replay saver), would you accept it?

Prove what wrong?

I asked if we had any proof that FF7 was the PC game & not the PS1 game & someone said the fact that it was called a port was the proof that it's the PC game, & I said "Technically recompiling PS1/PS2 games to be playable on PS4 in HD with trophies make them ports."

They'll have trophies. The first sign of this happening was in 2013 when someone found a patent that Sony had filed about a way to implement trophies into games that previously didn't feature them. And the four Star Wars games all have trophies, including Super Star Wars which was a SNES game.

Just to clarify, this one is a port, not running under emulation.

My sarcasm meter, it can't make heads or tails on this one! Honestly, not having trophies is a good relief in my opinion. I almost thought you were saying that adding in trophies would be a deal breaker because it adds needless distraction to the original game, but then I checked your post more closely. Well, to each their own I guess, glad I don't care too much about these I guess, used to with Xbox 360 games, but trophies never clicked with me exactly, and I'm pretty much exclusively PlayStation now so it doesn't really matter to me.

It wasn't sarcasm, but it's also not completely due to trophy addiction. I have fond memories of the PS2-era, but I've already experienced it & now I actively seek new gaming experiences. Platinum trophies would've helped the games feel 'new' since earning them is an exciting challenge & I get to add more plats to my collection.

Are you seriously just playing games for a little badge that indicates you did a thing? Are you skipping some digital games because they don't include a shiny picture of trophy? Would you skip a hotly anticipated game of yours because of it?

If you answer yes to any or especially all of these questions, take up stamp collecting. It's better suited to your interests.

It's fine to not be into trophy hunting, but there's no need to attack the hobby. I play games that are fun & new -- if they're not both of these, I won't play them. And like I mentioned above, the PS2-era is not new to me; I still hold memories of that era and have little desire to return to it unless I can complete new challenges, adding a few plats to the collection in the process.

I'm not gonna go into a huge debate with you about trophy hunting, but it's a fun hobby for those that enjoy challenging themselves & building an impressive collection of achievements that they can look at and take pride in. It also adds many hours of replay value to most games.

I just don't feel the need to revisit old games that won't live up to the nostalgia unless I can at least get a few plats out of it -- big deal.

They are NOT recompiled though. If they were recompiled, there would be no discussion. What happens is that emulator has a module watching for specific events involving memory states and/or disc input requests and firing a signal to the OS when it wants to. It runs on top of the game.

It's honestly weird. The watcher is new work but it doesn't really affect the workings of old code too much, it just... watches. It's almost like an upscaler but for logic.

But do we know if that's the case for the Star Wars games?

I don't think it was their goal but Sony managed to take attention away from Xbox One's BC with just 3 PS2 games on PS4 & not even saying much about it.

What really excites me is the potential for greatly improved performance and image quality. I've still got my last gen systems hooked up, so while BC would be convenient, it's not killer for my PS4 to lack it. I've also still got my PS2, but I have to turn it upside-down to get it to play games, and even then, they look like murder on my HDTV.

Having some classics running smoother and looking cleaner than ever on the big screen sounds awesome. Me and my friends still play the likes of CTR very often, but the PSN version runs like gravel on the PS3 in split-screen, and looks even worse. If the same improvements we've seen to the PS2 games emulated thus far can also be applied to PS1 games, well... I can't wait.

It's feasible that PS1 games could be even more enhanced, since the task of emulating a PS1 would be far less demanding on system resources, and as such it would free up more system resources to be dedicated to enhancing the visuals. They could be increasing the internal rendering resolution beyond 4x, lock the framerate at 60fps for titles with unlocked framerates, and perhaps provide some kind of advanced image post-processing.

Not that I don't want that to happen but why do you think that wasn't done last gen? PS3 would have been plenty powerful. Hmmm.

Sony's story was that they were trying to preserve the look of PS1 games as much as possible. The PS2 had more options to improve how PS1 games looked than the PS3.

I think Sony ran into some problems with actually selling PS3 games early on, I recall publishers complained that people were using it as a cheap blu-ray player and advanced PS2 instead of buying the iffy launch window PS3 titles. Sony was struggling on many fronts so improving the look of PS1 games may have been too much work for too little return.

This would be great if I could use my existing PS2 library... 100s of discs.

Unfortunately this is going to be a case of reselling the games again. I get why, I understand, etc., but fuck that. I have a lot of rare games that will never see the light of day on any store.

I'm a bit salty because my launch PS3 died, and I really enjoyed playing PS2 games on it. I have my slim PS2 hooked up and ready to go any time I'm in the mood.

Think about it: Shadow Hearts 2, Skygunner... hell even Baldur's Gate 2 Dark Alliance... you aren't going to see these games on the store.

If Sony introduces something where I can put my PS2 disc in and rip the game to my PS4 HDD, I'll be ecstatic. But they aren't going to make any money that way...

I think it pretty much it. They had far bigger challenges to deal with at that time.

Now? They're on top of the world, and dedicating resources to creating another differentiator for their platform, something that no one else can offer, makes a lot of sense.

Pretty much same situation.

The PS2 is exciting to me because of the weird niche shit that won't ever get releases.

I have a feeling we wont be hearing anything at psx, we'll probably have to wait for a while. Not basing this on anything, just a feeling.

They were forced to speak about it because of the Digital Foundry articles, gave the minimum amount of information possible, and have their own conference in just over a week where the focus is exclusively on them.

They will 100% speak about it.

They may announce like its coming but i doubt we'll be able to play classics this year other than star wars. We might see this in next year early big PS4 firmware update because current emulation is still in beta and might not have reached to a level where they can release with good compatibility for several titles.

Well, it's not really the same situation we see on XB1 BC. I don't think it's possible for sony to reproduce what you want.

I didn't actually think about that, but boosting PS1 games to full 1080p, locking FPS and post processing could indeed be in the cards if they are supporting PS1!

Great, that's great. All of these RPGs are coming soon (I hope), so many games I want to replay or to discover (like God Hand and many more...).

What ever happened to Final Fantasy 7 PC port for the PS4!? It's like a year and a half since it was announced. Has the remake cancelled it?

It's been less than a year, but yeah it is massively late, the iOS port has already come out and that was announced after the PS4 port.

Ah my bad I was thinking it for announced the E3 before last. It's a shame it's taking so long surely the further away from Remake the better.

I do hope trophies aren't a requirement though. If being forced to include them meant certain games never got released as new PS2 Classics I'd be pretty pissed off

I'm pretty done with trophy hunting these days, but the prospect of Burnout 3: Takedown with a platinum has me salivating. I'll take any excuse to get all the gold medals in the greatest arcade racer ever again.

Never played it on the PS2 though. Probably looks a bit worse compared to the Xbox version, but performs around the same hopefully.

They are both nothing compared to the technical wizardry of the 360 version of Burnout Revenge, but i'd take Burnout Revenge PS2 in HD emulation any day on PS4

You know that thing where the thumbnail for a game in the PSN store sometimes shows a different game? Maybe it is nothing but I have only ever seen the glitch for games available on the platform the glitch is on. This is on PS4.

This is a very promising glitch that we will see something soon.

The worst announcement would be that they have PS2 Backwards Compatibility and it will be launch at E3.

It's been nearly three years since the PS4 where Yoshida dropped a hint about emulation, and they already released three games that are apparently quite solid. They should have something ready to go at PSX.

I don't knkw about tou, GAF but I never get rid of my old games. Still have over 500 PS2 games with discs ready to be played via emulation. I'd love for thr PS4 to at least play PS1 and 2 discs as a start. I would want to replay Shinobi, Dark Cloud series, DQVIII, as thats the definitive version graphics wise and the Shadow Hearts series.
