Calm down, man. The beta went up only a few hours ago. Have you never dealt with an Early Access title or beta before? Calling a dev incompetent for not fixing something in a few hours after a major release like this is just silly. Give them a day at least.
 
I can't even download it. I did manage to get it to start syncing 30m later but I had to leave.

Which this is the same as other launches..like WoW. I remember when they gave us free game time due to the amount of an unplayable state the game was. Like servers being completely down.

Happens with minecraft even. Sometimes you can't log in but your friend can. Or nobody can log in but if your on, do not exit.

Most recent one I can't remember cause I didn't play that game as much as I did WoW back in the day.

Yes its both unacceptable and acceptable.

I absolutely have, and every single one, I've been able to play it when everyone else could. There were bugs in the game, that's fine, it's Early Access/Beta/whatever. When a number of users can't even play at all because the developer is incompetent and screwed over a bunch of player's accounts, there's a major problem. Being in Beta/Early Access does not mean the developer gets a right to outright rip off the customers, at the very least they should be able to play the product they bought at the same time as everyone else that bought it. There are no valid excuses for this. If it takes a day then Frontier needs to take a good hard look at itself, because that right there is a mark of incompetence.

As someone who works in software development, this is straight delusional, man. Sorry. It seems like you have more knowledge of what the actual issue is than I do, but you can't realistically assess the scope of a bug without knowing what's causing it and what's required to fix it.

Then they better have some master plan to reimburse customers somehow for this, because this is completely unacceptable. They should have caught this before release, I mean they didn't take that extra week for nothing, did they? There is no valid excuse for this.

Hylian, seriously, calm down. I understand you're frustrated because you can't play the beta, but you can play the main game perfectly fine. They are going to have issues with the beta. It's what it is there for. You're yelling at people in the thread like you do the dota thread when they aren't doing anything to deserve it at all. There are plenty of examples where people buy something (early access beta, full release, whatever it may be) and can't play at the same time as other people because of server issues. Sometimes you can get into servers and sometimes you can't. They know it's an issue and they are working on it. Play the main game or play something else until you can play the beta. It isn't going anywhere.

But, this is a beta phase launch. Not release, beta phase. You say they should have caught this before release? IT'S BETA PHASE, not release!!! The whole purpose of beta is to find bugs and fix them for launch. You paid extra money to take part in the beta phase, which is not a guarantee for anything other than helping them fix things for launch.

So....good job? Obviously you have found an issue and they can now try to fix it. Thanks for helping! Go have some cake for your helpful deeds!

If you don't like playing buggy pre-release stuff then....don't buy beta access anymore? I've beta tested enough damned PC games to know that I will never pay extra money for the "privilege" of it ever again. Almost all of my beta testing was free, which I have zero problems with.



I think you need to just go do some bounty hunting in the game proper and relax dude, try again in an hour or two! :)

When the issue is "sometimes you can access the servers, sometimes you don't", this lasts a few minutes, not a consistent problem that only affects some users and does not affect others. I have yet to see a single case like this where some people can't play just because reasons. That does not change the fact that this is inexcusable.

I'm not yelling at anyone here, people are trying to throw the bullshit "entitled gamer lolololol" argument at me and it's an absolute fucking load of horseshit as money was paid for this, and mostly everyone else can play with no problems whatsoever. I have tried everything under the sun on my end to try to get this to work. Let's just go through a brief list here:

- Downloaded the client from the "Downloadable Products" when logged into my Frontier Account
- Used the EDLaunch.exe in the Steam/steamapps/common/Elite Dangerous folder
- Validated game files in both Steam and in the launcher (options > Validate game files)
- Pinged the server in the command line, no response for some reason
- Made a firewall rule to allow all connections in the 64-bit version of the client.
- Turned off the firewall temporarily

This is clearly on Frontier's end, and it's unacceptable.
 
Hylian, you need to relax and stop lashing out over a known issue that the development team is working on fixing. It's unfortunate, but it is literally a couple of hours into day one of the beta. Keep some perspective, once it's fixed and you're playing you'll pretty much have forgotten this trouble existed and then looking back on those old posts will make you feel very silly. Play something else, watch a movie, whatever. Just go do something else until it's resolved.

Holy shit, you seem positively insane.

Anyways, bought it on Steam. Going to have to try this game out tonight. From the looks of it, it appears to be something I've been wanting for a long time. Love space exploration. Any good YouTube videos out there to teach me how to play? I heard the tutorial isn't very good.
 
Hylian, in the purest sense, you're right: they should have caught this and you should be playing. But, it is literally impossible to QA/run automated tests for every machine for every user for every scenario. It just is. The company I work for even brings in customers and outside consultants to test outside of the "happy path" and there are STILL bugs and workflows that we can't account for.

I don't know what is causing this, but given that there have been no other large/outstanding beta launch issues, I'm sure they're working on it. Do I think FD's stakeholders, or board, or whatever, is breathing down FD's neck to fix an issue that is impacting a portion of a portion (a small number of beta users) of their audience? Probably not...but I don't really think this is any indication of gross incompetence or negligence on FD's part. Sometimes shit just goes wrong that no amount of further insight could have predicted.

I feel for you, man. I'd be extremely hyped and subsequently disappointed if I were in your shoes, too, especially seeing almost everyone else around you play it. They'll fix it.
 
I work as a QA myself and I know that we can't test every type of machines the users have. We do our possible but a bunch of those bugs occurs at every game release on PC, it's just inevitable.

In a way, you won a bad luck lottery.

I have a 660ti which, until today, was perfectly serviceable for ED...I'd usually get about 50fps. Time to upgrade, I guess!

I accepted a new SRV mission. It took me awhile to understand what they expected me to do. It turns out I needed to scan a collection of data points. You scan by first targeting a data point in contacts when you are close. Then switch to turret mode and press and hold whatever button you mapped to datalink scanner. That starts a timer, and you have to find 4 more datalinks in the same base before the time runs out. Each time you scan a datalink, time is added to clock.

Even though I don't have the beta, I can still feel the gravity and use the new hud. And only airless worlds appear to have gravity and give you the new hud.

Clearly the launch of a game well over a decade ago is a completely reasonable analogy to a game releasing on the cusp of 2016. Sure server issues are common place, though not as bad as they used to be, that doesnt make them acceptable (though admittedly it should serve to temper expectations). Either way just struck me as odd seeing the grossly mis-used complaint about entitlement in a situation where it was literally true.
 
Planetary landings are amazing and so seamless. Beautiful stuff. Feels like an entirely new dimension of gameplay. I love cruising down through the canyons at low altitude. Combat near the surface and at mid altitudes is going to be awesome.

The scarab controls like complete garbage, though.

I did that but I'm not sure what to do next. It said something like data package prepared but the mission is still there and I have no where to deliver it to. The feedback is pretty bad for this. I'm really fumbling my away around it.

I found it was hard to drive with the HOTAS. It drives great with a Xbox One controller.
 
So I finally started the actual game for the first time (not Horizons). Here's how it went:

I want to eventually do an explorer role, but I guess the best way to earn the money for that is to do some trading. Looking at the shipyard I think I'll earn enough for a Hauler, and then use that to trade enough for an Asp or something. Any tips on this would be appreciated. I know I need to find a lucrative trade route though and grind that for a bit.

I'd already played a bit of Elite 1 and Frontier: Elite 2, so I kind of had a basic jist of how trading goes down -- find a system that has what's common in the system you're already in, preferably close by, buy low, sell high. What has me confused though is how so many systems don't display their system maps or market data. In the few systems around where I started I could see which ones were industrial or agricultural, but nothing more than that -- not specific imports or exports or even just what was in those systems.

I started out in an agricultural system and one of the ones right next to it was a "refinery" economy, so I decided to see if I could profit off some grain. Turns out the system I traveled to is unexplored. With my basic discovery scanner I was able to find some major astronomical objects -- two stars, two planets, and a couple moons. They'd already been discovered by other players, but I don't think anyone has gotten around to doing detailed scans of the system. Should I keep poking around or just leave with what I've got? If I can get to a station at least 20LY away (that's what the station services menu says) the game says I can sell the data for around 3k. With the grain I was able to make a roughly 400cr profit. I think I'll just keep traveling and trading until I make that distance, making sure to pick systems based on economies.

I still suck at supercruise and landing though. YouTube videos make supercruise look so easy. It's almost as bad as when I tried to travel within systems in Elite 2. I basically had to just leave autopilot on.

Overall (this is including my experience with the training missions) this game reminds me a lot of some flight games I used to play like Fury3 or Hellbender, or maybe that brief time I tried out StarLancer. It's unusual and kind of exciting to see a game with this PC simulation feel but also (roughly) AAA-level graphics. The interface is also surprisingly good in my opinion. I'm shocked by how well Frontier was able to get it to work on both a mouse and a controller. I'm actually primarily using the controller even though this was designed as a traditional PC game. I'll eventually pick up a Thrustmaster though. I'll try to find time to keep playing in-between everything else I've been picking up (mainly Fallout 4 but also some small games I want to finish before the end of the year). From what I've heard and experienced I hope I can find some semblance of the systemic role-playing space experience I've wanted to have for a while, at least the flying and economic part. I think my perfect fantasy video game would be some combination of this, Mass Effect 1 (done right) and STALKER.

I really love the idea of Horizons -- to me it looks like what the Mako in Mass Effect should have been. I'm just not ready to drop $40 on it. I had to wait for a $15 Steam sale just to get the game proper because I'm not comfortable paying full retail price for a game that requires an internet connection at all times.

My HOTAS was on my porch this evening. I worked 12 hour today across 2 jobs. All day I was looking forward to setting up my stick and playing base game Elite. My Internet is out. This happens often and sporadically, sometimes for days. My entire night is bunk because I can't play solo offline. Your position is preferable to mine. Just sayin'.

I was able to connect again. That is what mine says, but I didn't have access to the 1.5 beta, so I wouldn't expect to see it.




I wondered around a planet and collected a bunch of crafting stuff. There is a lot of new stuff to learn. Some of it needs better explanation between new mission mechanics and reading the radar and mining the rocks with materials and what not, there is a bunch a stuff I stumbled on but I know I'm just scratching the surface.

So wait a minute, theoretically you are in the same situation as me, however you got lucky and it worked once? Am I understanding this correctly?

No, I was playing for quite a while. Then it disconnected and for maybe 20 minutes I was getting the "can't connect to Frontier Servers" but then suddenly I was able to connect again.

Settlements bring me to 12fps with everything set to low... looks like my 650m laptop can't hang with horizons. Or something isn't being handled by settings.
 
I think it's been 12 hours now? I could be a bit off. It's still ridiculous.

Has anyone been able to try it on a similar setup to mine?

It's an account issue, not a pc issue. Few people have tested it by logging in on friend's pcs that were able to play and they couldn't get in. When they logged in with the account that could they could play just fine.

Mh, that doesn't sound good for my laptop. I only managed to start the download this morning. Will have to see how it handles itself and whether such drops will be limited to the surface.
