Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

LOL

Yeah, at some point you just need to close the book, jump in, and ignore all new TVs. Until you're ready to buy another.

The past few years have been challenging with the clusterfuck rollout of 4K hardware.

2013 - 1st gen 4KTV. Only a few models were upgradable HDMI 2.0/HDCP2.2.
2014 - HDMI 2.0, HEVC, 4K Apps. Mostly edge-lit LCD's and HDMI 2.0 with limited 10.2Gbps bandwidth. The only FALD models were from Sony at $8,000 and Vizio who dropped 3D which eliminated them from my list.
2015 - HDR, HDMI 2.0A added to select top end models via update. Once again Sony only offered FALD on the top end model which is a 75" plus side speakers. Physically too large for my space. I came close to buying a 65" JS9500 but wanted to wait until 4K OLED launched. LG delayed the HDMI 2.0A flat models until Fall. The price drop on the EF9500 made it the front runner but panel defects have me waiting for them to sort it out.
2016 - More robust HDR capabilities? Dolby Vision? HDMI ARC that can pass lossless? New OLED's and LCD's are expected with improved color gamut and light ouput. If the rumor is true that LG removed 3D from the new OLED's then they are out for me. I am interested to see if any other brands (C'mon Sony) bring a LG OLED based TV to market.

Fantastic TV. That's the exact model I own and its been great for me in the past 3 weeks. Even better once calibrated (I used 709). Gaming is responsive too, been playing Sm4sh on it.

I went ahead and bought this tv today. Got it all set up and I'm loving it. What settings do you use for your game mode? If you have cable, what settings do you use for that as well? Thanks in advance!

Quoting this for when I get the chance to check my settings. Will edit this post or PM you if you prefer.

I have played single games straight through for 6+ hours on my 65EF9500, no IR let alone burn in. I have seen EC9300's with panel destroying burn in though. The one at my local best buy had the webOS menu burnt in leaving faint yellow markings behind. But they let the menu up for 3 days straight.

Maybe the 9100/9500/9600 handle it differently, or perhaps people are smart enough to not let it even have a chance to happen in the first place.

Five years on with my X1 and no burn-in. A couple cases of IR, but the wiper did its job. So, basically.

Yeah, you're not wrong. It's a really weird time to be looking for a TV.

But I'm pretty happy with the JS9500. For now. Hopefully the kinks will be worked out with the OLEDs and in 2-3 years I can pick one up for a decent price.

3D on the LG OLED is nothing short of miraculous. I never even once bothered with it on my Sony TV. Ive actually used the feature on the 4K OLED

It's a shame the tech was tainted by years of piss poor active 3D quality on LCD sets (and piss poor studios and directors). Passive 3D on a 4K OLED is beyond words.

I ordered the LG OLED 55EG9100. Fuck 4K. There's no content anyway.
I'm still trying to convince myself this was the right choice.

Arrives on Monday.

What have I done...

Hope it arrives in one piece.

Nice! Hope you like it.

(4K content sure does look outstanding though.)

I am in the market for a new TV, but it seems like it is not a good time to be looking for one. The best TV current seems to be this 65 inch Panasonic 4K OLED tv (http://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarc...nds-on-with-panasonics-tx-65cz950-4k-oled-tv/).

Did some more research, and it appears that next year's models will have close to double the brightness levels and more color range than that TV. So, it's best to wait it out. Hopefully prices come down a little too. And most importantly, there needs to be a flat version of these top end TVs. Get out with those curved screens.

Personally for OLED it was 4K or bust for me. The 1080 sets produced too visible of a pixel grid, resulting in screen door effect that ruined the PQ, not to mention the 4K set featured better color and processing as well.

I looked at a couple of LG 1080p OLEDs in store (this years model and last years model which is now discontinued) and didn't notice this at all. Is it only when you're sat really close to the screen?

I'll be sitting about 7/8 feet away from the screen so it won't be an issue right...? I can't justify the price of the 4K OLEDs right now. It was OLED or bust for me after seeing it in person.

Plus if I got a 4K set it would have ended up being a never ending rabbit hole as I would have wanted to get another 980ti and my current Yamaha amp isn't hdmi 2.0 compatible.

For me it was visible even in that distance

Guess some people are less susceptible to it? Ive seen people complain about it and others not realize its there. Weird.

I didn't notice it in store so hopefully it's not something I notice when I have it set up at home.

Bear in mind my current tv is a 5 year old lcd toshiba 40rv753. I think I will find the jump big enough!

Now my brand new Samsung JU7500 did three self reboots today. The TV goes black, and then starts back up to the Samsung logo. I wasn't even using it for very long.

Do you have the software updates set to automatic? Maybe it was doing updates.

I've got mine set to manual and the only time it's ever rebooted is when I turned HDMI-CEC on in the settings. This also caused my PS4 to start up and immediately shut down. I've since turned CEC back off as I find the automatic switching of inputs and turning on of other devices a pain in the ass. I would rather maintain direct control, especially since I sometimes land on the wrong input by mistake.

Well it did it twice in a one hours setting. How would I know if it was performing an update? Any way for me to check now whether or not it was doing updates yesterday? All I noticed was that it turned off and then rebooted. Thanks!

Why don't you just set both software and firmware updates to manual (not at home but I think these are separate options). I would also turn off HDMI-CEC. Then see if you have any more problems. If you don't, then all is well and you can then try turning CEC back on if you want it. If you continue to have problems then I would seek an exchange if you are within the period, otherwise contact Samsung. I wouldn't worry about not having the box. Most people throw them out immediately.

Well I am talking to Newegg in a live chat right now, and I am talking to Samsung in another live chat.

Newegg tells me I can't return without the box. Samsung tells me to use the TV without a surge protector, and check if the problem persists.

OMG

Anyhow I will try that later on... thank you!

Is active 3D still bad on the LCDs? I just got a JS8500 and was hoping the 3D would be comparable to the Passive 3D on the OLED sets.

Yeah Newegg sucks.

They said no way, no return possible without the retail cardboard box.

They sold me a defective TV, and I don't have the box anymore, and they told me to deal with Samsung Customer service for their limited warranty.

I know it doesn't help, but this is the main reason I prefer buying a TV at the local Best Buy. Painless returns, box or no. I'm not sure if Amazon requires the boxes too. IF the TV is defective, then I'm sure Samsung will make it right.

I wouldn't say "bad" but It's not as good as passive. You're still going to deal with the flicker and more crosstalk, simply because of how the tech works. Passive 3D is best 3D, based on my personal experience.

That's my seating distance as well and I don't notice it. At 5 ft or less then I can see the grid.

I also went for the 1080P as I would like to get a 70"+ if I ever went 4K. Probably going to be awhile until prices on that size come down to earth.

I (finally) called Amazon about my Asus VG248QE 24" monitor, they will send me a new one and won't be charging me anything. Thank god for their good customer service, all my themes are black so the green pixel is that much more visible... it was driving me crazy.

Is it normal for audio from the Wii U gamepad to be heard before the sound from my TV's sound bar? There has to be some delay buy I don't know what else to do to fix it.

Yeah I made a mistake. I was going to buy at BB, but they didn't have the size TV that I wanted to buy. So on a whim I ordered from Newegg. Won't make that mistake again.

I turned off HDMI CEC and used the TV for 45 minutes, and it didn't power cycle again yet.

I returned my TV to amazon and they were absolutely outstanding. Sent someone over to box it up (they brought their own box just in case I'd tossed mine away), took it away, and I got my full refund in less than a week.

Amazon is the absolute best place to buy. Doubly so since I don't have sales tax with online orders (for now).

I wonder if I called a different person and spoke with them over the phone, instead of doing an online chat, if I would get a different answer about returning my TV?

Nah, they probably have a written computer record of what already transpired today and they would just say "you already got your answer" in a very polite way right?

Newegg sucks.

Thank you! Much appreciated. Either way works good for me.

Does anyone have any images or video of some modern 2d game like Disgaea 5, Dragon's Crown, or MvC2 running on an OLED? I still haven't come across any and would be interested to see how they look...

I'm still waiting for gaffers to post Unfinished Swan on an OLED TV.

Thank you so much!!! About to be home and I'm going to test these out.

I know this thread is primarily for TVs but I'm interested in finding a monitor to replace the budget Insignia TV I'm currently using to give to my folks.

From doing some homework on Amazon and displaylag.com, I'm looking for a monitor less than 32 inches but I would say larger than 19 inches if possible. Having two HDMI inputs instead of just one would be a nice bonus but not necessarily a deal breaker. Built-in speakers would be a requirement until I get an external solution later down the road, or at least a headphone jack/aux output.

Response time is very important, big fan of Street Fighter and Smash here. This would be for my Wii U and PS3, also as a second monitor to use with a MB Pro. In terms of budget, sub $300 would be greatly preferred and sub $200 would be even better (not sure if I'm asking for too much here ha ha).

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

The BenQ RL2755HM looks right up your ally. I actually bought this for Sm4sh mainly too, lol. I ordered one last week for Black Friday on Jet.com with the 20% off sale and it came out to $182! Seemingly it's been out of stock everywhere in the past 4-5 days now though for whatever reason...

Great response time and input lag, 2 HDMI ports, solid size 27" (I wish TVs wee this responsive and good for gaming).

I was supposed to receive it on Wednesday but according to the tracking on Fedex is was damaged on it's way to my house so I never got it. I have no personal opinions of it, only what I've read online.

Thanks for the input! Wow that's practically perfect, would need to save up a bit for the price though, whenever it gets back in stock. I don't necessarily need amazing resolutions or response times tbh, just something close enough to a CRT if possible.

I'm looking for slightly cheaper options that might sacrifice some features in the meantime. Sub $200 would be the magic sweet spot. Also, this is going to be a purchase in the near future but not something immediate, I just like to weigh my options far in advance. Anyone have thoughts on something like this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236305

Anyone have any suggestions for a 55 inch 4k tv? OLED is kind out of the question, given the price.

Gonna use the tv in the main living room, with probably some gaming, sports, some movies... Currently have an awesome plasma tv there, but moving that one downstairs and they, sadly don't make plasmas any more (so pissed about that, I absolutely love them and everyone always says how awesome my Sammy tv picture is). And I very well may just do my gaming downstairs. Any tv that gets me as close a picture quality to plasma tvs would be preferred.

My very quick search turned up this tv - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung/3953148.p?id=1219609307256&skuId=3953148

UN55JU6500FXZA is the model number

Is that the kind of tv that I'm looking for?

I should add that it's not always viewed straight on. The way we have the living room set up, I or the wife may be directly in front of the tv with another person slightly off the side. Absolutely no issues with the plasma, but I'm not sure how image quality is on other models.

My 65EF9500 OLED is being delivered by Amazon today! Really, really hoping for a panel without noticeable banding or vignetting.

Good luck. That was the only nail biter for me. I got mine from best buy and was ready to return until I got a good one. Luckily, I one shot it and got a keeper. I have 373hrs on it now (finally looked at the timer recently) and it seems to have held the settings now from last time, no adjustments needed.

Even though I have less than 1/2" flaming on edges with 2% slides, in retrospective, I wouldn't run those slides and have just run something dark like The Dark Knight and see if I noticed it. Those slides will without a doubt show at least one flaw in every set and you'll have it eat away at you. Just watch what you normally watch, give it a decent break in, and see if you're happy with it. Now, that yellow streak some people had is grounds for me to return, but didn't have it. If you get a 510/511 build, you'll probably be in good luck.

Thanks for beta testing the technology for me though, OLED TV owners!

No prob! But it's not like work or painful to stare at the best picture to date.

Also, I don't think people have to change gaming habits, unless your habits include leaving static colorful Windows and menus on your screen for over a day straight, then perhaps OLED is not the tech for you.

Ok, not really sure on your price range but I'll offer some suggestions

If Samsung: JU7100, JU7500, or JS9000
If Vizio: M series (2015)

Not sure about any other companies. Take a look at these on rtings.com before deciding. They all have a 55" option, good luck.

If I didn't go for OLED I would have got the Sony x850c. http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x850c

In terms of picture quality and black levels it was the best reasonably priced 55" 4K set I could find. Far superior to anything similarly priced from Samsung or LG.

Does it have to be 4K? Because if you want to get great picture quality and good viewing angles the OLED is really your only option for both. If you get an IPS LED you will get good viewing angles but there will be a drop in picture quality. The opposite is true for VA panels. The 1080p OLED might well be in your budget but if you're set on going 4K then you will have to make some compromises.

If you get an IPS LED you will get good viewing angles but there will be a drop in picture quality. The opposite is true for VA panels. The 1080p OLED might well be in your budget but if you're set on going 4K then you will have to make some compromises.

It doesn't have to be 4K, but I kind of wanted to future proof myself with this. and to that note, I'd just as well buy a Plasma if I could (I'm sure I could find one on ebay, but I'd prefer to keep a purchase such as this "new.") Budgetwise, I'm thinking no more than a $1000, but I was hoping to keep it under that. I searched Amazon for that Sony you mentioned and got it at 1200, that would be the absolute max if the tv is too good to pass to up.

As for viewing angle, it's just the way we have the living room set up. Someone, aside from who's sitting directly in front of it, will always be viewing from a slight angle, maybe 60º at 7 or so feet away. Never any issues with the plasma since it looks great from any where. And maybe I'm thinking too much into the viewing angle in that it's not much of an angle to be concerned about, I just hate to spend this much on a tv and be unhappy with any aspect.

Hey guys I think I'm exchanging my M55 for an M60 today. Is it worth buying the three year extended warranty? Also, I'm finally getting my TV mounted later in the day!

Well I turned off all that stuff, and I left the TV unplugged for a few minutes, and I didn't notice any power cycling last night. Someone else also told me it's a known software bug on most Samsung LED TVs that's being fixed soon. Hopefully it doesn't come back.

Yeh if you're used to the plasmas picture quality and viewing angles you're going to find the search for a new to tough.

The only thing you can do is go to a store with a shortlist of 2/3 tv's that you want to see in person and then make a decision based on what you see and how the viewing angles look.

Also look to see if you can find a deal on last years 55" OLED model the EC9300, you may well find a good deal on one as most stores are looking to clear their stock of them if they haven't already.

I have the Js8500, and it's a great TV.

Also, for those of you having problems with your Samsungs doing weird things after thone shitty software updates, try resetting your TV to factory default settings. It's in the settings menu. It did the trick for me. Just remember to jot down your picture settings beforehand, hahaha

Silly question regarding 4:3 and letterbox content on an oled: Would the borders cause any sort of damage if I were to play a game in 4:3 for extended periods of time?
