Fan Favorite PS2 Games Launching on PS4 Tomorrow

Calling it "robbery" is unfair.
It's a premium price, and surely is high, but not unfair.
If 5-10$ were accepted for PS2 classics, I think that 15$ for upres, trophy, remoteplay and streaming-ready versions deserve some more recognition for the effort.

sure, but this is "15$ upressed, trophy remoteplay and to hell with your ps2 classics"

The Mark of Kri at 1080p? Fuck I told myself I was done spending money on games this year...but I have to grab that. The other games I don't have much interest in, but my second favorite console game of all time? You've got my $15 Sony.

Of course I'd love widescreen support and 60fps, but the fact that Sony even remembered this game at all and decided to bring it to PS4 is cool with me.

Reactions running from 'I think this is a fair price' to 'Sony fucked up and killed ps2 classics!!!!!'

I doubt they and kicking themselves over the decision right now

Any word about the framerate? If the game had shitty framerate on the PS2 will it be the same?

Judging by the Star Wars games DF looked at we'll have basically rock-solid 30 or 60 fps, depending on what the game maxed out at originally. I don't think we'll get games that previously ran at 30 to now run at 60, but whatever it runs at it should be stable.

I have nothing against the price.

Yes it is the same game. All they did was add a wrapper for trophies and use features available in every modern emulator to render the games at 1080p and add AF and AA.

+ Remote Play, Share Play, Streaming, Recording and Screenshots.

depends if the game is capped at 30 or 60. If a game is capped at 30 the emulator won't give you 60fps.

I'm surprised at some of the hyperbole around the pricing. Highway robbery? Really? Nintendo charges a flat $10 for N64 games. I don't think $15 for improved PS2 games is asking too much. That said, it's definitely the upper limit of what I wanted to pay. I was hoping for a $10 baseline with $15 for more in demand titles, but it seems like $15 is the baseline with $10 for less popular game.

Honestly don't know why they don't just build a universal emulator and sell it. Almost everyone must have a few disc-based PS1/2 titles lying around that they'd be happy to run on their PS4 but not so happy to buy individually, even if it costs as much in the long run. Sony would probably earn a lot more money and goodwill that way.

Awesome news!

Are Vice City and San Andreas untouched? I remember hearing the PS2 classics were patched to remove some songs due to lawsuits and whatnot.

If you still have your PS2 classics on your PS3. Those aren't going anywhere. If you feel this is unjust. Just don't buy them. It's fine. But him calling it robbery is unfair and pretty hyperbolic.

Why are people describing these as bespoke remasters? They are the original game isos running in an emulator. Just like the PS2 Classics released for PS3.

Yes the emulator has more features now, and yes you have access to core PS4 OS features, but it is the same arrangement now.

The only additional bespoke work done for these games is for the trophies.

I was a bit shocked at $15 at first, but I'm coming around on it. People who got them as classics should get some sort of discount though I feel. Then again I'm betting these games will feature pretty heavily in upcoming sales.

so if rockstar is allowing gta for ps2 bc how about red dead for xbox one?

The 360 version is based off the mobile port, seems like the PS3 version is as well. I'd assume PS4 is getting the crappy mobile ports as well. I'd love to be wrong though

Xbox One backwards compatibility covers sixth-gen games?

Not currently, but they're considering it.
Will probably be only the ones available digitally on 360 imo, but would be awesome to have more obviously. Different approach in terms of software BC from the big three now.

$10-15 is fine for a new download of the games with 1080p enhancements + added trophies.

But honestly they are dropping the ball.

They should have PS1 classics support and PS1/PS2 disc based BC via software emulation (PS4 is more than capable). And folks who bought PS2 classics off PSN for PS3, should get a discount from the PS4 version of those games.

Remote Play, SharePlay, and streaming support basically come free with making PS4 software. Those are OS-level features that require practically no effort to support other than controller mapping for Remote Play. It'd be weirder if emulated PS2 titles didn't support them. Sony doesn't get a medal because their emulator supports things every PS4 game also supports.

At least trophy support requires effort to implement and upressing at least requires QA to ensure it doesn't cause bugs or performance issues.

If they can sell each slice of pizza to you in increments rather than in one big payment (as in get the pizza all at once), they will. Besides, they already have that arrangement for PS3 with PS Now, essentially.

It's obviously subjective but for me charging 5 bucks extra then they were on PS3 because of the upscaling and trophy support is too much. It's not like these are crazy new features that were worked on for ages.

Well that and I already own some of those GTA games and I will not rebuy them for $15.

Edit: Guess I'm wrong about the platinums, weird considering Bounty Hunter didn't have one. Point still stands otherwise.

As someone with no PS2 classics I think it's pretty bad they don't give owners of those versions a cheap upgrade path like Nintendo did.

Yeah I know they've been considering it. I remember there were some articles on it in the last few months. I was just being snarky since I find comparing the two methods a bit disingenuous since they're trying to cover different console generations. If and when they add Xbox compatability, it'll be fair game.

The limited number of titles clearly demonstrates there is not a universal emulator. Each game they put out is going to require individual attention.

Unless you have actual evidence to support that claim that is complete nonsense. The limited number at launch just indicates that they are going to try to give the impression of continually added value through the periodic release of titles. That is a normal marketing tactic that does not imply anything about the state or nature of the emulator.

A simple example of this happening before with absolutely nothing to do with the emulator's functionality was when the Vita got a very limited number of PS1 games, then it turned out that tons more were playable through workarounds and Sony eventually opened up the tap in response. (note: I am not talking about the later event when all PS1 classics games were made available in NA for a weekend).

I wish Twisted Metal Black would have come with Twisted Metal Black Online. Even if you had to launch it as a separate game.
