Fan Favorite PS2 Games Launching on PS4 Tomorrow

Square tax. Weren't their ps1 games on PS3 more expensive than the rest?

yeah $9.99 i think for every ff title

Honestly don't know why they don't just build a universal emulator and sell it. Almost everyone must have a few disc-based PS1/2 titles lying around that they'd be happy to run on their PS4 but not so happy to buy individually, even if it costs as much in the long run. Sony would probably earn a lot more money and goodwill that way.

this will make more money, and presumably they are going to dripfeed these games, handling them each individually

personally, i think the price point is high, but i'll just wait for a sale

the whole no classics upgrade stuff. well they're probably just gonna sweep it under the rug unfortunately

It seems very entitled to expect completely remastered games for free or heavily discounted. This whole debate is eerily similar to that of PS3 remasters; people feel entitled for free-bees or discounts, but in the end the games will be successful enough despite all the salt & entitlement. If you really want to play your PS2 games you already bought for a ps2 system, then play them on a ps2 system. Alternatively, if you value trophies, share play, gameplay capturing, and all the other nifty features that come with remasters, then you're gonna need to buy the games again, and with good reason.

Regarding Platinum trophies:

Awesome. Not as comforting a comment as I'd like, but at least it indicates that platinums will be closer to the rule than the exception.

I'd rather they not give me these fancy, new, features and just let me play the PS2 games I bought on the PS3 for free. After that bare minimum, then you can start charging for your premium versions of PS2 games, with at least a 50% discount for people who already own the game to have an upgrade path.

I really am fine with everything but the price. 9.99 is a better price imo. The games are fine without trophies.

Aside from the steep $15, which I don't find that horrible, I find the lack of titles disappointing. I was hoping them being quiet about this even if everybody knew about PS2 emulation meant that they would announce this with as much games available as possible.

I was really hoping to play Katamari by the holidays :(

The only game I'd ever buy at that price is Gran Turismo 3 or 4, since there is no good 60fps racer on the PS4, but that's never going to happen.

This is the complete opposite of what I want.

1) This requires development effort, which means a lot of the third party games I want won't be released on it, such as :
- Suikoden 3 to 5
- Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne
- Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter
- Valkyrie Profile 2
- Dragon Quest VIII
- Radiate Stories
- Grandia III
- Shadow Hearts 1 to 3
- And the most important game, Xenosaga Episode III

2) These games are made specifically for PS4 which means when PS5 rolls around, we're in the same boat and all our old purchases are wasted.

3) Same as above, all our existing purchases, whether disc-based or buying their current PS2 classics are wasted.

This is a fucking money grab. You could have supported both, with emulation and "enhanced emulation" (trophy support, up rendering, etc) for those select games. Shame on you Sony.

As someone with no PS2 classics I think it's pretty bad they don't give owners of those versions a cheap upgrade path like Nintendo did.

Why even an upgrade path? Nintendo also shouldn't have done it.

Yes, the work they did on these games cost them money but not every company decision should be based on trying to make people pay for stuff. Sometimes you can eat some of the cost for your consumers to be happy. To earn goodwill. This is a very anti-consumer way to handle things.

The fact that Microsoft did BC really well so soon just makes this even worse.

Completely remastered? Lmao, not really

I would personally be ok with this and I wish this was the way they did it. I'd rather it was just straight cross buy but a cheaper price would be ok too.

I'm still going to buy Dark Cloud & Rogue Legacy...but I'm not paying $10-$15 again for the ones I already own on PS3.

It's obviously subjective but for me charging 5 bucks extra then they were on PS3 because of the upscaling and trophy support is too much. It's not like these are crazy new features that were worked on for ages. The trophies won't even include a platinum.

Well that and I already own some of those GTA games and I will not rebuy them for $15.
Some will.

I'm surprised at some of the hyperbole around the pricing. Highway robbery? Really? Nintendo charges a flat $10 for N64 games. I don't think $15 for improved PS2 games is asking too much. That said, it's definitely the upper limit of what I wanted to pay. I was hoping for a $10 baseline with $15 for more in demand titles, but it seems like $15 is the baseline with $10 for less popular game.

I think how one feel's about the pricing is going to be highly dependent on how many PS2 classics you already have. If you already own Twisted Metal Black and/or the GTA games as classics, you're going to feel a little bit robbed that there's no upgrade path (as Nintendo offers) or a means of simply playing the existing classics (as both Nintendo and Microsoft offer.)

On the other hand, Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy prices are acceptable given what they are.

$15?? I'll admit, I don't mind if it means more obscure PS2 titles can be brought over. However, that's still way too pricey.

Also I have Twisted Metal Black digitally for the PS3. So now I have to buy it again to play on the PS4? Fuck off, Sony.

Wow, I don't mind the prices but this is definitely dangerous for me and my love of PS2 titles.

I could easily spend $100 on any given night once the library builds up, gotta pace myself and not let nostalgia get the best of me!

As my name implies, this can be quite difficult.

$15 for trophy support added to a game you've already bought one one or possibly two playstation systems in the past seems like the biggest waste of money I can think of. Sony has devalued their entire digital lineup with this move.

Yeah, I don't see much support for this from third party devs/publishers, unfortunately. There will be a big wave of people buying and then it will die off, I'd imagine due to this method thanks to Sony getting greedy thinking of only the now and not the future of this service.

The more obscure/niche games basically have no chance now. It's a shame, but it is what it is.

These aren't remasters on the same level as Sony created and sold on disc last generation.

Nintendo gave upgrade discounts to their consumers for Wii U VC titles, which added features to those games. Sony should do the same for owners of PS2 Classics. There is absolutely no excuse for them not to.

The base price of $15 is fine for those who don't already own a game digitally.

I would have liked more games and more variety but I'll take it.

It's a great start, let's hope there will be a similar selection each month. I don't want them to handle this like Nintendo's VC.

Shame no PS1 games on PS4.

Why would we think these are the mobile ports of gta? It is being launched with other PS2 classics. Maybe due to the music licensing issues?

Unless you have actual evidence to support that claim that is complete nonsense. The limited number at launch just indicates that they are going to try to give the impression of continually added value through the periodic release of titles. That is a normal marketing tactic that does not imply anything about the state or nature of the emulator.

A simple example of this happening before with absolutely nothing to do with the emulator's functionality was when the Vita got a very limited number of PS1 games, then it turned out that tons more were playable through workarounds and Sony eventually opened up the tap in response. (note: I am not talking about the later event when all PS1 classics games were made available in NA for a weekend).

Why are so many PS2 games that would be huge sellers not available on the PS3 years after the first PS2 classics came out? Sony and the publishers don't like money?

Oh I definitely agree especially in this era of digital services carrying across devices. I guess at the very worst, they should offer a cheap upgrade path.

Wait for the December PSN best seller list. Watch the FF7 port be up there. Watch many of these games be up there.

I'm thinking this will be limited to SCE published games for the most part and used to bolster their PS+ game selection for PS4.

Going to wait for the PSX announcement to see if people who bought the PS2 classics get a break, but so far it seems unlikely.

I'd buy it for 100$ or more and just never download Shadow Hearts 3.

Sadly its not going to happen.

Yep. What a gigantic mistake.
