Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Chunk 1 (CyberConnect2, UE4) Trailer, "PS4 Console Debut"

By the way, I'd like to congratulate GAF on making it past Page 30 of this thread without a "I hope they give an option for original soundtrack" post.

Any hope that the world map will look something like this? The high-end graphics make me fear the world map will be greatly restricted, like FFX.

latest

I think the areas are going to be huge but they wont market the game as an open world trip like FFXV

Boss. Looks a lot better than I was expecting, for matching the original and looking incredibly high-end.

I hope they give an option for original soundtrack.

The first trailer was a warning to expect the same stuff. As much of a fan as I am of classic jrpg's that were turn based, they are a dead attraction these days. The last time I was relevant for me was Lost Odyssey and even that became monotonous to me. Final Fantasy XIII kept me more invested in the way it handled its system. Pure turn based strategy has become a niche field. To expect Nomura of all people o be the one o bring it back was truly not reality.

It sucks for the purist who wanted the straight up turn based gameplay, but they are definitely a minority at this point. Either we embrace this change or just let it go. It's ok regardless.

I think it's fair to assume Nomura prefers the action based combat. That's fair.

However, it isn't fair to say that turn-based are a dead attraction. Dragon Quest, Ni No Kuni, Persona, etc. are still being released today and in the last few years and feature turn based combat of some sort. There are ways to do a more updated turn-based ATB combat without literally ripping out the system and replacing the gameplay with something that isn't FFVII.

combat being turn based is not the thing that makes ff7 great. you can still have realtime combat and keep everything else combat related there like summons and materia and such. flipping out without more info sounds overreaction to me.

It's one of the things that made FF7 great. Turn based battle systems involve more strategy and put more focus on the secondary characters.

It's not an overreaction because SE just laid out the main focus of the battle system right there in the trailer. You have that nice combo meter beside the HP(that everyone thought was ATB), which makes it pretty clear that button mashing will not just be a thing in this remake, it'll be encouraged since the combo meter starts going down when you're not landing any attacks on the enemy.

I don't find action RPG mechanics any more "modern" than turn based. Action RPGs have been around for pretty much the entire history of video game RPGs, they've evolved, just as turn based combat has, but turn based and action battle systems are entirely two different game mechanics. A comparable to this would be like an OoT remake being turned into a turn based RPG.

And calling turn based RPG outdated is like calling modern Civ games outdated because they're turn based rather than real time. But if you play all the Civs in order, you can see how the turn based mechanics have evolved, that's what I expected out of this remake, not a hack and slash.

Whoa! This is full on. Maybe my expectations were unrealistically low, but I thought there'd still be static camera angles and such. Not that that would have been bad, I love that aesthetic as it really allows for some iconic controlled framing, but this is going to truly be a new experience.

Its not going to look like Xenoblade, cause FF7 aint an open world. The world map is just a linear 3D area to take you to other towns and specific places.

I'm not saying it needs to be at the same scope as Xenoblade. I'm saying terrain like that vs linear hallways.

Be an interesting compromise if folk rip the environments or use a potential photomode to create new HD background images to mod into the original game.

Are they going to cut out big chunks of the game like the overworld I wonder. Hope not.
Dude. Wat. Listen to yourself. Why would they cut out large parts of the original game? Do you not think that SE are fully aware of people's expectations? The remake isn't going to lose the world map. The game may present things a little differently, but in terms of actual content, they are not going to cut corners.

If they manage to pull this off with everything that FF7 had in the original game, it will be bigger than FF15. Way bigger.

He was always a skinny dude the thing about playing 7 back in the day everyone had predetermined vision on how cloud acted and actually looked like. So it can be a bit jarring for some.

Maybe, but this is one design I actually preferred in the Kingdom Hearts title when he was all dressed in black and listened to My Chemical Romance.

Right now he looks sickly and pale and like I want to take him to a hospital or something haha.

Oh snap! Didn't expect to see gameplay trailer for another year or so honestly. I guess with this the debate whether or not it'll be a 1:1 remake is off the table then :P

Aside from framerate issues, game looks good so far. Barret with shades is a nice change. Wedge looks so dang dopey.
I just hope they won't cut certain battles because the new battle system wouldn't work with it. I haven't played Crisis Core so I have no idea how that battle system's like either, but I guess it's decent? I'd prefer the old battle system to the action/rpg stuff, but ohwell.

Hopefully its not another cinematic hallway simulator with the VII brand. Im confident with Nomura, but that Uncharted stuff worries me.

Hopefully it still has full towns and feels like an RPG.

Did you play FFVII ?
The whole first part of the game liner and does open up until you leave midgar .

This completely blew me away; not only because the visuals look pretty damn good but by how much progress they've made in what appears to be a very short timeframe. This must be an Unreal Engine 4 title that uses parts of Kingdom Hearts 3, otherwise I can't explain that.

And man, glad they changed the battlesystem. People who want to play it like the original are baffling man; why do you want to have the exact experience as before? Besides, it would have been boring if this would be a carbon copy of the original with better visuals only.

This is a chance for SE to overhaul flaws and improve and tweak a ton of stuff here and there; seems like they are adding new story elements as well which is pretty neat.

This is a good direction and gives me way more Versus vibes than the current FFXV does. Really looking forward to this.

I think it's fair to say for this specific instance (FFVII remake), there is some leeway to be given to individuals who have been campaigning for 15+ years to be able to be upset about it if it doesn't match their hopes.

There is a significant amount of emotional investment in this particular game and the demand for a remake. There is scant a similar case for this in the video game industry where fans have been asking for this for so long.

Just telling those people who have been invested for that long to just play the same game they've had isn't good enough.

This is another thing. I've been asking for this for more than a decade. I stopped having faith in the series, so I put all my hope in something that was already done and knew for a fact I loved. As long as they remained faithful, I saw no way Square could fuck it up. But they did anyway!

Why are people worrying about that when they see this footage?

As if the first 10 hours or so in FFVII were open ended role playing with much strategy. Hell, some people use it as an example for early PS-era "cinematic" titles. Most of Midgar consists of linear pathways, set conversations, (fmv) cutscences, easy combat limited amount of members and abilities. And the game features many long sequences similar to that later as well.

Judging from the recent major FF releases, I really do not think they will pull another FFXIII on us. But I do expect "cinematic" segments in this game yes.

Right now he looks sickly and pale and like I want to take him to a hospital or something haha.

Agreed. I do not recall thinking this in any other modern FFVII representation of Cloud (spin offs, film, cameo's etc.). I do hope they patch him up.

whats wrong with turn based combat, aside from nothing that is

people are honestly saying things like
"oh you cant do turn based these days"

its infuriating tbh
i feel like an old man complaining tho
Just because you can't do it doesn't mean that it's bad.

It just won't sell to an audience which conflates action gameplay with immersive storytelling. You can thank the West for that.

So excited! I can't wait to play this. I'm also quite glad that it's an Action RPG. Don't get me wrong I loved the turn based gameplay in the original FF7 but I'm happy that the devs are going to take a fresh approach to the remake's gameplay.

I'm having a hard time processing this.

Like, HOLY FUCK. I never expected to see Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge recreated with that level of fidelity. How will the scenes involving them resonate now? Will certain scenes be more impactful, or will something be lost? I mean, how are all the people who had small crushes on Jessie back in the day (*ahem*) responding to seeing her brought back in this way? :P

And that Cloud model. Man, it is interesting. Not quite as glamorous, or as idealized, and even a little...messier...? than past recreations. I found it a little weird, until I started to fall in love with it.

Not sure how to feel, but I know this is going to be an amazing ride.
