Final Fantasy VII Remake is a multi-part series

OK I don't care ENORMOUSLY about the fact that it's episodic. But what's terrifying is the the clear implication that this game can no longer have meaningful location-to-location traversal; everything will have to be a set sequence of events. No world to explore. And that, is a huge, huge game changer.

Gelnika DLC

What you are asking for is a 1:1 remake which would take 10+ years to make, take up 2 dual layer BDs and cost $90.

This really drives home the point that modern game development can not accommodate the scope of past generations. Shit sucks.
Yep.

Watching that gameplay trailer all I could think was "my god this is going to be expensive for them to make." It all makes a lot more sense now.

Oh well. Perhaps they will release them all on a disc once they finish them all. Some how I expect the game to be disjointed now. Disappointed.

Hopefully they release the details soon, so fans can rage. Fans can make a difference, look at the Xbox One release. They changed the entire format.

If you guys yell and scream enough, your voices may be heard.

The same way original game did it across discs ?

There's still hope for a complete, cohesive world at the end of it all.

Now that seems like an interesting take on it. They could develop the overworld, and make it so that over time it evolves and new areas and stories / continuation of the main story are accessible from it. That makes sense, I have doubt that's how it'll play out, but it makes sense.

Serious hype killer. I'd rather wait until 2017 and have it all at once. This is FF7, not Metal Gear Solid V.

You're very optimistic if you think 2017 would be the date if the game was released in full.

I'd guess 2018 and late 2018 if they went full game approach.

I'm really not getting the reactions of dismay in here. Honestly to me this seems like you might just get the game a bit faster.

Also, I doubt it's going to be $60 for a small 10 hour segment with each episode folks.

Like, we don't even know all the details yet. "Episodic" doesn't mean "cancelled" or "microtransactions". At least give it a chance.

A big large-scale remake of a PS1 RPG classic was already a very tall order to begin with, so to me this seems like a bit of a compromise to really make it work, the more I think about it.

I can't really think of a way that this could improve anything about the game at all. Such a downer.

Especially since it'll necessarily have to cut down on a lot of the RPG elements, even if there's something with save transfers.

Episodic content like .hack? No problem if that the case, with overworld limitation until final episode where everything finally unlocked.

What if it's just:

FF7: Remake
FF7: Chocobo Racing Sigma
FF7: Snowboard Slopes Ultima B Crystalline Boarders
FF7: Submarine Duo Nocturnal 168^32 Aquatic Destiny

Folks, stop thinking the discs would be the separate portions of the game.

Disc 1 is like 60% of the story.
Disc 2 is another 35%.
Disc 3 is the last 5%.

I have no issue with people talking about it, but you have hyperbole like "ugh it's gonna be $60 for 1/3 a game" and "I'm out, greedy companies $$$" when the quote in no way says that.

Yeah, there's a big difference between "well this might be pretty bad based on what little we know" and "OH FUCK EVERYTHING IS RUINED FORGODDAMNEDEVER FUCK YOU $QUEENIX." The former is fine, the latter is ridiculous.

Aaaaaaand cue the internet overreacting. We have literally no clue what that sentence actually means for how the game will be delivered. Its a long ways off. Im going to wait to see what they actually mean before I get pissy.

I love when the adults chide the "internet" for "overeacting". This is a remake for maybe the most beloved game probably ever not called Mario Bros, and Square just announced, after a well received trailer no less, the worst news about it they could have. You're on a gaming forum, what did you expect?

Iif there is more context to it that makes this not horrible, they better fucking start talking.

They got so much goodwill for that E3 anmouncement...all horseshit if this is what I bet it is.

Does this mean I can have Kingdom Hearts 3 in episodes? Cuz that would probably be better fit for this than FF7 to be honest lol.

How to remake a beloved PS1 JRPG in 2015:

Step 1. Recreate all the fan favorite moments using a stunning graphics engine
Step 2. Cut the turn based combat system, overworld, sidequests, exploration, Etc
Step 3. Sell it as episodes.
Step 4. ????
Step 5. PROFIT!

Seriously where is this rage stemming from?

Where does it say any of that is gone?

Y'all losing it hard.

Square just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase any episodes of Final Fantasy VII, nor will they purchase any of Square's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Square has alienated an entire market with this move.

Square, publicly apologize and cancel FVII being released episodically or you can kiss your business goodbye.

The only thing this makes me worry about is the potential for an overworld. Maybe each episode will have a piece of the world then once the last episode comes out you can access all of it maybe? IDK just a brainstorm of mine.

You know things have gotten strange when a rpg is episodic. Sure it makes it to where it comes out earlier than expected (part of it) but at what cost? What really scared me is the whole each part being a unique experience. What does that mean? Episode per each compainion and their role in the story? It's for these reasons I like when most games are remastered and not remade. We love the games for how they were not how they would be like if they were released today.

Too late, everyone here are ready to assume the game will have the world map removed, materia removed, summons as microtransaction, and the game costing 200+ dollars to play.

I can understand being upset by the episodic stuff but holy shit this thread.
Maybe not dropping such a turd bomb in half a sentence would help?! I mean seriously, maybe expand what that statement entails in your fucking press release. It's their own fault for not being clear. The backlash had to be expected. And if they DO split it, it's right to say "fuck you".

Only hope is that this is just a poor translation of some sort and that

1) The story will be complete on one disc, but the story will be told through episodes to avoid an overworld map

2) Episode 1 will be FF7 and the next episodes will be continuing the story afterwards

But Square really needs to describe what is going on, this will roll out of control very very fast and a lot of bad rumors related to this might get started

Outside of Telltale games does the episodic format ever work for games?

I'd have taken the game coming out later over having it distributed in episodes, easily.
