Final Fantasy VII Remake is a multi-part series

this makes way more sense than doing a full on remake with all that effort that was looking like it would have. this way you don't have to do a huge mega overworld all at once, or even at all. it can just hit the key points of the story, walking dead season one style.

I'm totally fine with this. Or they'll just use a waypoint system a la Lost Odyssey.

Those were sequels, not episodic content for the same game though

Kingdom Hearts is extremely linear and the episodic style would lend itself to any of the games really well.

EDIT: Oh. You were talking about Dot Hack.

BURN IT TO THE GROUND.

In all seriousness, Life is Strange worked out, but episodic RPGs haven't really been done yet. I'm worried, yet interested.

Now that seems like an interesting take on it. They could develop the overworld, and make it so that over time it evolves and new areas and stories / continuation of the main story are accessible from it. That makes sense, I have doubt that's how it'll play out, but it makes sense.

In FFVII,You don't just get the complete world map and all locations available to you from the get go.

It gradually unfolds.EveryPS1 game did it like that and across discs.

Episodic game can manage it.

And people were worried about the game's battle system.

"ACTION? NOOO, PLEASE, I CAN'T TAKE NEW THINGS!!!"

"ATB? WHAT IS THIS? THE 90's?!!"

Now the game is episodic. OH MY GOD

I can't believe this is happening.

They're taking the one game where all fans demanded was a recreation of the original with modern visuals, and making massive changes based on modern market tastes.

Regardless of how good the changes are (Let's be fair, we're a LONG way out from even knowing if this is a good idea or not) - that's the boldest goddamn move I've ever seen.

Hope it goes well for them.
It absolutely will not go well for them.

It's disappointing, but I'm sure it will still turn out great. In the long run maybe it will be a good thing and will be bigger than it ever could have been otherwise.

probably only way to make that thing economically feasible

aren't those old games absolutely massive? must be a nightmare to remake that, but now with photorealistic graphics and fully voiced characters and cinematic combat etc etc

Haha oh I knew my trust in SE was misguided. Can't wait for the midgar escape to be a combat racing game next. Anything goes at this point apparently.

This makes a whole lot of sense. All along they've said one of the reasons they were against remaking it was the sheer amount of time and cost it would take to remake VII. Y'all have no idea how much it would cost to make an entire game of the scale of VII in the fidelity we saw in that trailer, especially if they want to keep the game world intact AND develop a new battle system to go along with it.

Releasing it episodically allows them to ensure it's released this generation and they can better optimise dev time while getting back some of the colossal cost of development. And yeah, they probably get to charge a bit extra for it too.

Realistically it's probably the only way this thing gets made. Hoping for few (if any) compromises to game flow, but have to be realistic. Some of the things we loved from VII doesn't make sense to include now.

I'm cautiously optimistic, honestly.

Just like Half-life

Half Life 2 actually started out as a full feature-length game. The episodes came out after.

The .Hack comparison is better, or even possibly something like Digital Devil Saga. Games that were planned to be episodic from the get-go.

edit: Although the term "episode" makes me think they probably won't even be close to being as meaty as something like Digital Devil Saga.

What? No. It doesn't mean that at all.

Releasing the game in chunks doesn't mean it will be segmented like one. And like hell that means there won't be materia.
For the materia system you really need the overworld map to level up all the materias. Also "with each entry providing its own unique experience" this mean that you can play any part without playing the previous one. Also the Weapons.... i going to cry,

Well, to be fair each episode could be sectioned according to the numbers of CD's in which the original released which means they could still retain the open map but limited just like in the original game =D

Each part at 40.00 ofc =D x 100

When they say each part will be their own unique experience, I have doubts.

Damn, I'm glad I thought the trailer yesterday looked like something I just wouldn't be interested in - otherwise seeing that GAF headline would have made me fucking furious.

Leave it to Squeenix to fuck it up. 100% dependable at that.

A WSJ reporter just tweeted this (read from bottom to top)

Data size is so huge, the software will be split into several downloads.

OK, I'll go ahead and download them all at once, then. My PS4 can parse files. :D

(I'm actually one of the few people ITT who is mostly okay with this, but that answer is pretty lulzy.)

And what's amazing is that we know ZERO additional details. It could have been them saying dozens of things.

Ok. If there is something that makes this acceptable, they better fucking say something NOW.

And the only way this isnt crushing news is if its "we want to release the game in 2017 for the 20th, but it wont be done. So we'll give you half the game then, and half later (or thirds or quarters, whatever) for $60 one time"

That I could live with.

How much you wanna bet its not that?

The discs have nothing to do with it. Every FF was gradual expansion of exploring.

Someone at SE: "Quick, show them the Sephiroth footage so they go back to hyped!"

Yeah, it'll probably be something like this.

I bet Kojima is the real mastermind behind this remake. He wanted Nomura to be the director because he knew he could control him. That would explain everything.

I'm replaying it right now, there really aren't that many towns or bestiary (if you take out reskins. Granted I haven't played 15. I would think 15 has about the same if not more.

I'm talking about recreating them.

You saw Midgar right?

That didn't look cheap at all.

Imagine how detailed the rest of the towns will look in comparison? Plus all the dungeons as well?

That's very unlikely. The whole point of them doing this is to spread out development time and create "unique" experiences for each episode. It sounds like this will not be in the traditional format of the original at all.

I don't know how to feel about an episodic JRPG. Has it been done successfully before? As someone mentioned, this makes me question the focus of the remake. The episodic model lends itself to narrative driven games a lot more than something like the original FFVII.

I predict a lot of... streamlining.

I actually wondered if this would be the case the day the most recent trailer came out.

"There's no way they can stick to this level of quality and release a full game in a couple years. They're going all in on Midgar, and releasing more stuff after."

Remember how EPIC and HUGE the world of Final Fantasy 7 was when you first left Midgar? Remember how majestic it was to explore that world map for the first time and discover what the entire WORLD of Final Fantasy was outside of that worn down, industrial, steampunk city? It was MAGICAL.

I doubt this remake will even have a world map. They're going to filter you from one set piece location to the other. We'll get that familiar story. We'll get to see those characters lovingly rendered with modern graphics. But that sprawling epic sense of exploration that we all got when we played FF7 all those years ago is going to be GONE! Mark my words. This game is going to be on rails and soulless.

Overreacting? Maybe. I personally don't have any huge investment in a remake of FF7. The original captured a very specific point in my life. I was a teenager and my love affair with JRPGs was in its adolescence as well. Final Fantasy 7 ushered my relationship with them from puppy love and admiration to a full blown love affair, and I'll always love it for that. But I don't think a remake ever had a chance to recapture those emotions. Now I know for certain that it won't. The FF7 remake will not capture a moment in time. It will be a cheapened, soulless nostalgia play from a company that is aching for my money, and I'm not falling for it.
