Final Fantasy VII Remake is a multi-part series

Episode 1: Midgar (you can't go back to Midgar until the end of Disc 2 anyway). Maybe Add the flashback too
Episode 2: From Kalm to the Temple of the Ancients
Episode 3: The whole north continent arc until Cloud meltdown
Episode 4: Hunting the Giant Materias and all that stuff
Episode 5: Midgar reloaded
Episode 6: North Crater

$30 x 6 = 180

I'll buy this.

A WSJ reporter just tweeted this (read from bottom to top)

This sounds a lot like Resident Evil Revelations 2; everything is going to be connected and finished but they are going to release it in large chunks.

I guess the release order will be like this:
-Episode I: June 2016
-Episode II: November 2016 (free with early versions of FFXV)
-Episode III: May 2017
-Episode IV: July 2017
-Episode V: November 2017

My first reaction was that this is bullshit, but thinking on it, if they really want to capture the full scope and spirit of FF7, which had a really detailed world, they would need to spend so many resources to make it perfect. Midgar itself could be huge if that's the first game. If they're able to fully realize the world over the course of several games, I don't mind.

This game was just way too big for them to redo everything. Watching the trailer with those nice graphics and all that detail there was no way they're going to put everything single in from the original for just $60.

The backlash here is more than enough for them to reconsider. It's kind of a deal breaker.

I mean, it really was too good to be true. There's no way they could've done the absurd amount of content that is FF7 in the fidelity they showed in their trailer.

Doubt they really give a shit about the backlash, it was probably expected and most people will buy it anyway.

Well, much like the responses people gave me in the last thread when I bemoaned the changed-up battle system; Deal with it, this is a remake being developed in 2015. It makes sense that it'll be designed with modern sensibilities. It's a remake so you should expect they'd change/remove things to bring them up to today's standards.

I can't believe how different I feel from seeing the trailer at PSX to hearing this news the next day, wow.

I hope we get some kind of damage control reassurances that the structure will be similar to the original in some fashion.

Ok. If there is something that makes this acceptable, they better fucking say something NOW.

And the only way this isnt crushing news is if its "we want to release the game in 2017 for the 20th, but it wont be done. So we'll give you half the game then, and half later (or thirds or quarters, whatever) for $60 one time"

That I could live with.

How much you wanna bet its not that?

What if they simply mean it's going to be a trilogy, covering the entire FFVII universe not just the base game?

Well this explains why we got an awesome trailer so quick and why it's only the first hour or two of the game. FFVII was a huge game when it released, and remaking it in full 3D now will only make it bigger. At least we already know the story so it won't be leaving any heartbreaking cliffhangers between episodes. This leaves them the opportunity to really expand on the gameplay.. especially all the minigames from the original. I can't imagine if they copy/pasted the motorcycle chase or snowboarding.. plus imagine the Gold Saucer when it's fully re-imagined!

Of course this leaves the question.. what of the overworld? We may possibly not even get a world map to traverse.. and if we do, it will be severely limited until the last episode. On the other hand, there were artificial road blocks in the original. It's not impossible. I'll trust in Square on this one... I'm sure they've been analyzing the plausibility of FFVII: Remake for years before they even announced it. They gave us what we wanted, and so far they've nailed the look and feel of the game. We're only getting one remake of this game, I want them to do it right.

Did everyone forget how big FFVII is? Midgar alone is the size of most games out there. When they showed off the footage at PSX I immediately knew it would be impossible to remake the entire game in that art style, graphics, and combat onto a retail disc. If I had to guess, there will be episodes similar to the disc changing of the original. Maybe broken up into more episodes.

While I've been making jokes, right now my feel is that this entire project is a horrible mistake. Personally I would've preferred something smaller scaled but that at least included the entire fucking thing.

I don't get why people are so upset about this.
I really have no interest in FF anymore or the Remake but it makes sense to me. It ruins the flow of pacing quite a bit. Say you leave Midgar, you now have to wait how long until you can play again? And it's not like this is a Telltale game where it's point and click, it's an RPG. What do you do then? Piss around in Midgar for 6 months?

Anyone who was expecting the Remake to be a near 1:1 match was fooling themselves, but this could potentially hint at each episode taking place in its own area(s). Which potentially means no overworld.

To the folks saying squeenix can't do it due to scope... Or that scope is missing from modern jrpgs... I mean I recently played zestiria (which is a budget game) which gave me like 60 hours of content and am now playing x which has a seemingly massive scope and likely a large budget and I'm not seeing your reasoning.

Oh wow look exactly what a few of us said. They're fleshing out the game with more side/tangentially related content so they feel like full games.

Rabble rabble rabble.

If each game is 40-50 hours long and really expands the universe, then yes, I am ok with this.

I really don't see that happening, but I'd love it.

Typical internet reaction, blow a gasket before details. Can't just be curious gotta be pissy too.

We don't need details. An episodic structure, by its very nature, cannot offer the same level and freedom of roleplaying gameplay as an open world RPG. It forces players to experience a narrative in a linear fashion, much like a TV series. It works great with story-based games but FF7 is not just a story.

Assuming that the game is still going to be a massive RPG world in the end...what will happen once you finish an episode?

Would they let you back track and let you do side quests and stuff that you missed? Just blocking off a part of the world map and having no story progression for a year or whatever until the next part is available sounds REALLY WEIRD for an RPG.

They're going to have to be really careful about how they frame the episodes. My biggest fear is that they'll just make the game super linear, more linear than it was in the original game.

This sounds awful. I just wanna play the game from start to finish. If they overprice this, which they probably will, I will be very unhappy about this whole situation.

So, just a multi-part game, not necessarily "episodic" the way we think of it?

As long as data carries over and we can still backtrack etc. I'm okay with it.

Episodic just means its release is staggered.

If the releases are spaced out, it's still episodic by design.

Can't wait to get to the end of the midgar outskirts ready to explore the great unknown.

Then be treated with credits and asked to pay for the season pass to see more.

After watching that trailer the thought had occurred to me that this wouldn't be a full fledged remake, but maybe just sort of a cinematic retelling of events. Kind of a linear hallway with cutscenes similar to FF13. Episodic structure sort of backs up that idea, but we'll see I guess.

If so, it'll still be cool, but definitely not the experience we all really want.

I'd hope for 3 episodes max. 6 is stretching it out too much.
