Final Fantasy VII PS4 |OT| One last time before the remake

i don't really understand why people would want to make the game easier than it already is. if you can actually get beta before trine (i did it once many years ago), you're already at a level that can trivialize that entire stretch of the game anyway. i've always found the practice of grinding to be an absurd waste of time regardless since regular progression yields as much experience in a handful of battles as an hour of sticking to one area and grinding it out..

Getting Beta on your first encounter with the snake is a meta game in itself. You have to grind a bit and definitely strategize. You also HAVE to have on elemental-fire on your armor materia slots.

I did this a while ago and I found it very satisfying to have beta available so early.

Yep. That materia combo, Sadness status to reduce damage, and be in the back row.

Also don't attack with who has Enemy Skill when it's in the upright position, lest you risk getting tail swiped out of the battle.

yeah i agree with this. i did it back in 98 and it was incredibly satisfying to pull off. it was less about getting beta and more about the process of getting it. the next 5 or 6 hours just lost all meaning when you can crush everything instantly. :P

like, that kind of strategizing should be part of the normal game. beating godo at a low level involves similar approach. ie. using elemental lighting to aborb trine, poisoning him and draining his mp to avoid it healing more damage than you can deal, etc. it's fun. the whole game should be like that!

it's just a rant that's been building up for a while reading about so many people's willingness to grind and talking about 'the grind' as though its this mandatory part of the game to justify using cheats.

While we're on the subject of enemy skills, which I largely ignored for most of my playthroughs when I was younger, howwa bout that Mighty Guard?

So good. Haste, Barrier, and Protect, all in one spell for the whole party. The only reason I ever noticed this spell is because I was browsing through a strategy guide looking through the bestiary and noticed this enemy near Costa Del Sol with that enemy skill.

The only downside is that Barrier and Protect don't last as long as they would if you would've casted them manually, but that is a small price to pay.

I was poking around the FF Wiki and I saw this interesting tidbit about the Relationship system, specifically in Don Corneo's Mansion.

If Tifa is chosen as Don Corneo's date:

"You alright?" (+3 Aeris)
"We gotta help Tifa!" (-2 Aeris)

If Aeris is chosen as Don Corneo's date:

"You alright?" (-2 Tifa)
"We gotta help Aeris!" (+3 Tifa)

In other words, Aerith likes you more if you're concerned about her safety, and Tifa likes you more if you're concerned about Aerith's safety.

Aerith is disgusting.

what are the missable trophies?

Date with Barret, and getting picked by Don Corneo I believe are the only missable trophies.

How did you level everyone's limit breaks so quickly??

Mythril caves, there's a room in there where every battle is 4 or 5 enemies at once (go in from Junon side and up one screen). Also abused R3, after getting everyones limit breaks legitimately numerous times over the past 17 or so years, I like to think I've earned the right to cheat and cut down time!

Speaking of Wall Market, I'm curious, people playing this for the first time (or the first time in a long time). During the portion where you climb up the giant wall, how long did it take you to successfully grab the swinging bar? I remember getting pretty frustrated with the timing of that on my first try as an 11 year old.

I've been playing this the whole week... doing nothing else but saying goodbye to my original favorite game of all time, I felt sad and excited at the ending credit... sad because this is the last time for me exploring the world of this 1997's masterpiece.... excited because I know the next time I'm going to explore this world is in the remake, a dream I dreamed about since 2003 when the revealed Advent Children.

Bring it ON ;)

that and the goddamn dolphin and the fucking marching. ugh.

she's a hussy. TWO boyfriends?! and that's only the ones we know about!

I watched the intro credits today in their entirety for the first time in 19 years. I absolutely love the arrangement of the prelude. It's so...sad.

So do we know for sure if the barrett date trophy is glitched by the cosmo canyon loop?

It's not your last time. It will always be there!

I used the Cosmo Canyon loop for about 10 minutes and got the trophy. But prior to that I had been pro-Barret in mostly every instance of dialog choice.

Quick question: I forget, can you do the Wutai boss gauntlet on Disc 3? I want to hold off until I get all of the Enemy Skill materia so I can get Trine again.

Beautiful post. I knew you were the poster before I even checked :)

Playing through this again, I'm wondering how much they could expand Midgar and the story around it in the remake, probably not enough to make that a full game in the split up version they are planning. Midgar feels like they can throw that part somewhat on rails.

The one I had to actually concentrate on, and use a guide for, was the Best Bromance trophy. There's a lot of specific choices you have to make from the very beginning of the game, up until the date scene at the Gold Saucer.

Other missables:

Consummate Cross-dresser
Shuriken Join Us
Won't You be My Valentine?
Roundtable Destruction

Everything else is basically obtained through attrition as you grind up to level 99....granted that you dont miss the materias that drop after boss battles.

Dont forget date with barret and aeris limit break.

There is a ton they could do. They barely show anything about how the bombings affect people. They could easily add a bunch of sidequests where you help people who've been affected like helping a kid find their missing parents or escorting injured people to a clinic, etc. They can also add scenes showing how Avalanche think they are heroes when in fact they are hurting hundreds of innocent people. That is mostly glossed over in the original. Also we never see anything from most of the sectors or life above the plate. I'm actually shocked playing through it again after a decade how quickly the Midgar parts move along.

A few of you advised me to play this before the remake but I contemplated it for days and I decided to hold off. Even though I'm thinking about it day and night and the damn game is downloaded on my PS4, I want the remake to be a really special playthrough and I know I'll be a lot more invested in the story if I don't know whats going to happen next.

Yes I know Aeris dies! I'll play it one day, probably in 2019 after the remake is complete.

Best $10 dollar theme ever btw :D

Midgar can definitely be stretched out by a bunch. For example, instead of Cloud not being hurt for falling 100ft or whatever, he could be in a coma or something while Aeris takes care of him and then they switch to Tifa and Barret and we play as them as they find info that leads them to Don C. They did this type of stuff with FFXIII so it's nothing new.

But seriously, how do these characters fall over 30ft and not die lol.

I don't see there being any sense in valuing the remake's "specialness" over this game's when the remake(s) will likely cost 15x as much, is years off, and no one even knows if it'll be good. Meanwhile, this game is incredible in every way, exists on your hard drive already paid for without a second thought. That's just crazy and I don't see the logic in it. If people were saying OMG this Final Fantasy VII Remake game I just finished was amazing even beyond the original I would support your path, but not at this stage when that is not likely to happen IMO.

The ruining of experiences works both ways, and I would urge you to jump in.

They have superhuman strength. Remember how Cloud and the others can jump 300 feet in the air and land as if it was nothing during Advent Children. Final Fantasy characters have almost Dragon Ball levels of power.

Believe me I'm tempted. I'm the same way with movie adaptations of books, I don't like to read the book beforehand because I'm more of a movie person so I like not knowing whats going to happen next.

I love the theme btw, the PS icons look so slick (Internet browser, TV, Capture etc).

That's fair. Something analogues might be... are you more of an action combat person than turn-based?

What a nostalgic trip! I bought my PSX to play FFVII and it just feels wonderful to play it again with improvements such as 3x and no encounter.

does cheating include the 3x speed option? you need that shit for all the grinding. it made it bearable trying to get characters' limit breaks and stuff. for the first time i was able to get Aeris' level 4 limit.

if you've finished the game before, sure go nuts. don't let me stop you.

fast forward is a great thing to include in an rpg. it was cool when chrono cross did it, except that made you finish the game before you could use it.

No random encounters is cool.

3x speed is cool.

Infinite health/limit break is not cool.

Then again, do whatever you want, lol. I'm only going to cheat to grind out levels/get Aeries limit break/get 99mil gil/99levels.

Cloud is not human obviously. Members of SOLDIER are showered with Mako energy and
injected with JENOVA cells.
They have superhuman strength.

I mean, using the cheats is taking the meat of a game out of a video game. Foregoing that isn't what I'd describe as a purist, more like just normal, especially considering FFVII isn't that difficult on the scale of FF.

Well said.

So do we know for sure if the barrett date trophy is glitched by the cosmo canyon loop?

I think the consensus is that you can use the glitch to boost his affection, and the trophy pops by looking for his affection level to be within a certain range. If you overuse the glitch, or your affection level is already high enough, and you boost it just a little too much to go past the high-end of the affection range the trophy is looking for, it will cause the trophy not to pop.

tl;dr - if you're going to use the cosmo canyon glitch, don't overdo it.

playing a retro game as it would of been played when it was originally released is large part of being a purist, don't you think?

If Final Fantasy VII were released on the PS4 as a brand new game today it would not come with a full HP and no encounter cheat. That's because there's been no evolution in game design where cheats are suddenly good design and fun. If in the case it did come with cheats and that's expected, I can see a no-cheating-folk being a "purist" because they'd be holding on to past beliefs about what makes a good game and want the "pure" experience.

However, when Final Fantasy VII is a new game to someone and nothing about design has been inherently changed, I don't see someone being urged to play normally for a virgin playthough is now a "purist," that's just... I don't know, normal, lol. When FFVII is retro in terms of age but not design, I don't see the retro aspect being relevant.

Cloud is not human obviously. Members of SOLDIER are showered with Mako energy and

They have superhuman strength.

What comes to mind then is
Tifa falling at least 50 ft from her prison cell building and instantly sprinting down a massive cannon, getting into a slap fight, and jumping and holding onto a moving airship's rope.

Since the conversation is on cheating right now, I'll be honest and chime in. I've used all three cheats at points already (only about a half-hour in). I've tried to play this game so many times over the years and every time I end up quitting half-way or three-quarters of the way through because grinding and the slow battle system make me want to pull my hair out.

Is it the wrong way to play it? Probably. Do I care? Absolutely not.
