Ehh, just do it. There are good bits in Menace and Clones, believe it or not. You just have to sit through a lot of nonsense to find them. If it helps, watch them all with an air of "Well, at least TFA (probably) won't be like this!"

And you absolutely owe it to yourself to see Sith. Best of all the prequels by a country mile.

EDIT: Someone earlier in here linked to this AotC "Anti-Cheese Edit" that might help out. Apparently there's a TPM one as well. I say give 'em a whirl.

There is also a ROTS Edit as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14tMHjDkKLA

Trust me, they make the Prequels Watchable.

My friend just told me he likes the fighting in the prequels more, "it's not boring."

Sigh.

He likes the prequels more in general. He doesn't understand how anyone can like A New Hope because of "how boring and slow it is."

That's a very common opinion from more casual fans, and objectively speaking they are full of energy and motion

Don't be a dick to him about it.

Hey now, I never was a dick to him. I just said in my opinion, I'm not a fan of most of the acrobatics because they seem unnecessary.

I was just gonna come in here and say that haha i'm watching them right now, they're actually decent movies with all these edits

I watched TPM and it was surprising at how much better it was. The aliens being subbed helped a TON. (I am looking at you Jar-Jar)

and, Anakin was not terrible in it either. Made him seem...smarter.

I've got tickets for the Thursday night early screening at 7pm and a Sunday matinee in a DBOX-equipped theater three days later. How about you guys?

Thursday night at 7pm on IMAX. No other showings booked because I work all opening weekend but I'm going to try and get to the Emagine in Livonia to experience it on D-BOX at some point. lol

Yeah I meant that you shouldn't start a NeoGAF style bashing of something he likes.

Sorry if it came off as an insult, I didn't mean it.

Man, how are you guys still getting Thurs. tickets? Every Thurs. screening in my cinemas got sold out the first week alone.

Got ticket yesterday for buffalo imax, friday 1:45 am. Really surprised I was able to get tickets so late in the game, but not complaining.

No reserve seatings though >.>

I think i'm gonna invite my father to watch the movie with me in Chile, too bad it's gonna have to be on the weekend since he works ugh, i wanted to watch it on the 17th. It's probably for the best since i bet it's gonna be insane getting a ticket on opening day.

Anyone that has ordered from Cinemark before, can I go there earlier this week and pick up my tickets or does it have to be day of? Asking because my boyfriend will be cutting it close to the actual time and I want him to be able to just slide into the theater with no hassle.

Have you checked since? Most theaters added tons of showings since the initial sellouts

There were, but I was on the fence a lil too long since I already had tix for Fri. They also ended up selling out like hotcakes

There is one theater in the next city nearby, but only nosebleeder seats are left.

Yup I did and I already have my tickets, I went and got them a couple of weeks ago and I had originally purchased them the moment they went on sale via Cinemark's site.

Just be sure to bring your confirmation email with the confirmation # because when I tried to get mine from the terminal/auto kiosks and swiped my card it told me I had no showings booked, but when I entered the confirmation # it printed all of mine immediately.

Okay, so I've got four tickets for Thursday at 7:00 (IMAX). Just how early does everyone think we should get there to get good seats AND sit together?

Agreed. The lightsaber duel in A New Hope is pretty dull and stilted compared to Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

That's because it's a slow and methodically-paced sword fight between two old men who used to be good friends.

Obi-Wan even tells Vader about the consequences of striking him down. Vader, still with some hate in his heart, does so anyway.

The fight is slow because of the goddamn sword props being heavy and fragile, unsuitable for a flynning duel.
I mean, who can take seriously Obi-Wan's spinning attack? It is so slow, logically he left a big opening for Vader to exploit. We don't see such mistakes in ESB (ignoring Luke's obvious inexperience) or ROTJ.

No doubt Lucas would've liked it to be more showy (like ESB and ROTJ fights) but... it is what it is, unfortunately.

If there's one bad part in A New Hope (ignoring Lucas' later edits), it is the sword fight.

My local cinemas are forcing me to watch Star Wars in 3D. I hate when they do that... Not that I hate 3D, but the tickets are always more expensive.

Guinness was in his early 60s when that sword fight was shot. I don't think Lucas had any delusions of trying to make Obi-Wan's fight any more showy than it was. He casted Guinness solely because he liked him as an actor and he fit the 'wise old sage' role.

so I watched ep IV last night for the first time in probably a decade in preperation. I forgot just how good it is. ep VII definitely has a lot to live up to, more than just to 'look star warsy' :p .

Great pacing, wonderful characters, action, humour. The scale in every sense... oh and that moment where Luke looks out at the twin suns and the music swells.. My god it's just so good! but the added CG shots/scenes... so bad. so, so bad. completely took us out of the film every time.

Getting despecialized for V/VI for sure. Now i'm really gettin hyped for Friday.

Thanks, I started watching the TPM edit. I guess it's not fair to judge a movie based on a fan edit that removes large sections of the film, but it is mindnumbingly dull so far.

Me: "by the way did you take Thursday off work"
Friend: "why would I need to do that"
Me: "for the Star Wars marathon"
Him: "I can still make work"
Me: "18 hours in a movie theater and still be at work?"
Him: "oh yeah I might not be able to get out of work"

Haha, let's not kid ourselves here.

Without spoiling anything of course, is it known how much TFA will acknowledge or refer to characters and events from the prequel trilogy?

Midi-chlorians. Jar-Jar. It's real. All of it.

In all seriousness, nothing really. It's been 50 or so years since the events of the PT. There's a few little references here and there like Anakin's podrace flag in the trailer's castle scene, but other than that, I don't think anything substantial will be referenced.

Kylo Ren speaks about continuing what Vader started. I assume he means hunting down the Jedi, but that's more of the dark times era than the PT.

Why would they? I mean, other than Jedis getting wiped and the rise of the Empire, there's nothing major to remember from that time period that happened... what? 50-60 years ago? If they mention anything, it will probably start & stop at "when the Jedis got exterminated decades ago", or something along those lines.

I have to disagree... especially if you are watching this movie fresh without thinking about prequels as I did last night. It's a great introduction to lightsaber duels.

They keep mentioning that lightsabers are civilized ways to fight so to me it felt like even though they were fighting to the death it was still an honourable fight.

Also, wasn't Obi wan was just buying time in order to be killed in front of Luke?

Just finish watching episode IV, this the first time I watch it with headphones and you can appreciate the soundtrack a lot more. It almost perfect how they make a soundtrack appear in the right scene every time.
