Holy crap, that Star Wars #TheForceAwakens is so good in the best old-school way! #StarWarsPremiere

No, not really. But more to the point, it's a good story well told. The film I referenced in my post earlier today was the last Abrams film I saw, which was the Star Trek reboot: very well made movie with a really dumb story. My worry was this would be that. The reaction so far is almost universal in saying TFA is good, with what negativity to come so far has been about the story. Basically, what I was expecting.

Star Trek (2009) reboot was written by the guys who wrote Transformers and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Star Wars The Force Awakens is co-written by the guy who wrote the original Star Wars trilogy and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

JJ did not write the screenplay for Star Trek.

Patton Oswalt: "And stay off the 'net 'til Friday. 'Cause there's a bunch of #StarWarsForceAwakens shocks someone will spoil."

So, you know...be careful out there, kids.

Goodness thank you for reminding me of this. JJ did not write either Star Trek. He wrote Super 8 and Mission Impossible 3, which I felt were both really well written. And Kasdan is no slouch..

Actually Orci and Kurtzman wrote MI3. Yeah it's weird, as that was a good script, IMO. Abrams did write Super 8. But this is written by Abrams and Kasdan, two writers that I respect and whatever faults Abrams has as a writer could be spotted by Kasdan during the process.

Yes. Several people have inferred that it borrows too heavily from ANH. Also there has been a building stigma about the film that it's gonna play "isn't gonna do anything new"

Anyone expecting this film to do anything drastically different were fooling themselves. This movie was always going to make the older generation feel something familiar

People are angry that Faraci called it 'OK' and are now gathering his entire back catalogue to find opinions they also disagree with to compensate.

its not angry. They just don't want him to be right. Next worst review besides his places it between Jedi and the PT (which to me it is a disappointment if its not better than Jedi, because Jedi is a major step down from IV and V)

They don't have to look much. He gave F4 a good review and that movie was a terrible mess.

People just want to be able to confidently take his opinions worth a grain of salt.

Hmm Maybe I should separate plot and story. ANH had a dumb plot. Its story (which is how the plot is told was amazing)

Agree in a sense. ANH was a well told story, but the plot itself was dumb. What made it work was the characters and their chemistry, and at the time mind blowing special effects.

I guess its comes down to if that one person who happened to like F4 (worst movie I saw all year) is right and the "story" is dumb. Is he referring to the plot, or how the plot is told.

Again, my reference point here has been Star Trek 2009, not Star Wars. The quality of the story / plots are very different. I'd be ecstatic with a plot as good as ANH.

Yeah it's weird, as that was a good script, IMO..

Orci and Kurtzman are perfectly capable of delivering good scripts. Most of the time those scripts just happen to be on television.

I think STID* and especially ST09 have good scripts as well. YMMV, but either way their MI3 stuff is solid and they've done some fine work on the small screen.

*(I don't deny it's problematic)

He's a toolbag. A lot of film bloggers agree.

And that matters how? He's still essentially giving it a fresh review. 'Faraci' is a passed around like a dirty word by people who don't even read him enough to know that, even if you disagree with him, you can't say he hasn't thought out why something doesn't work for him. That he doesn't give a shit for upsetting the hive mind is the first sign to me that he's just saying what he thinks. "Yeah, but he also said this in 2011" is just denial. He's not being malicious. It's crazy that anything less than great is frustrating these people.

Is it really though?

So I bought a ticket, and the clerk just told me it was for the 18th. I thought this movie was coming out on the 25th, so I thought she meant the 18th of January 2016. Well, I was causally looking at the movie listings for Friday (I like to start my work week by seeing a movie) and she meant this coming 18th! Im so excited!

It's actually out tomorrow! Well, if you're on the GOAT continent. Sorry about your lateness to the party, America!

Twitter reactions look good. But yeah we need to take it with a pinch of salt. Think it's time to get outta this thread until ive seen the movie now!

"No spoilers but #TheForceAwakens is beyond amazing. Truly. It was an emotional experience that exceeded my hopes!!!"

I think complaints are weird when it comes to this stuff. People point fingers too easily. Jurassic World was criticized by some for its nostalgic elements, but it's a sequel set on the same island and is a continuation. It also felt nothing like the original and has its own story ideas with the raptors, the hybrid, the setting was its own thing... yet people hear the fucking music or see the old park for like two minutes and start yelling about nostalgia.

Likewise Into Darkness got shit for ripping off Wrath of Khan, and while certain moments parallel it even to a fanboyish degree, the actual film itself is completely different in every conceivable way. Khan was there but pretty much in name only and few other things about it were reminiscent. Two completely different movies, but when some saw those parallels it seemed to trick them into thinking the whole thing was a hack of Wrath. I'm just saying that tone and style are so important that even if there are parallels or even fan service, that the execution can be different to the point where they still feel nothing alike.

Basically sequels, reboots, whatever are going to carry certain DNA. It's not a bad or wrong thing. Force Awakens NEEDS to feel like New Hope. It needs to because it should be hitting those notes of establishing a new story and characters in an awesome and intriguing way. I think it will intentionally be similar in some ways but I also think Abrams is making his own movie with his and Kasdan's ideas.

Too bad my wife and my work schedules don't match until the 24th. Guess it's off the internet until then!

Can I trust GAF to keep this thread spoiler-tagged though?

There's a spoiler thread so I would hope anything that has to be spoiler tagged would be posted there anyway.

For douchebags actively wanting to ruin shit, I'd say stay a page or two behind this thread so that whoever pulls that shit gets banned and their post gets edited before you run into it.

Because you made two posts in this thread saying that you are worried that the new Star Wars film will have a messy story like the Star Trek (2009) reboot.

I guess I don't understand why Star Trek is being used as a reference point, if the people involved with Star Trek's story and screenplay aren't involved with Star Wars? I mean, Michael Arndt, the writer of Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine, has a writing credit on The Force Awakens.

For the record, it's absolutely fine if you aren't excited for this film, or if you are skeptical of this film's story. I mean, it's very possible that Devin might be right. After three disappointing prequels, everyone has earned the right to be skeptical about this film.

good advice.

Kristian Harloff (Collider) @KristianHarloff: We are back in business kids, back in business indeed. Bring on ep 8 #ForceAwakens

This is what I wanted to hear!

omg. there are like 30 overwelmingly positive tweets and we are still parsing the comment from one guy (who has a history of being a contrarian) who said the movie was ok.

You are falling for it. This is the reason people like him post that crap. He is getting more attention than all the positive tweets combined. Why would he not do it?
