Avatar is the most expensive movie of all time (not officially, but it's a bit of an open secret), it was not based on a beloved pre-existing brand, and the main characters were blue cat people.

It might seem like a sure thing in retrospect, but at the time the hit-pieces were being churned out in anticipation of a collosal disaster.

In no way is a Star Wars spin-off as risky as Avatar. What is the risk? That Disney might make a hundred million dollars less than the half a billion profit than they were hoping for?

I see your point. Maybe I got a bit carried away with diminishing the budget and lack of pre-existing IP.

But I still stand by the fact that absolutely nothing about Avatar's script was unique or risky in any way.

My showing is at 10:30pm and we have a huge (20 people) going for a non-reserved showing. Yes we already have tickets.

A few of our people are going at noon. I think that is way overkill and will be showing up around 6:30 (after work). I'm not downplaying the craziness of the lines, am I?/

So who is planning to see this movie in 3D? Because most of the showtimes in my area seem to be RealD 3D, Digital 3D, or Imax 3D.

And then I read this quote from JJ Abrams.

"As someone who really hasn’t been the most vocal advocate of 3D, the strangest thing happened to me on this. When I was watching the reels in 3D, there were a number of shots — and I know this sounds insane — that I hadn’t understood in the three-dimensional space quite the way I did when I saw them in 3D. I actually felt that there were things that were playing better in 3D. I had never felt that before."

Star Wars fever everywhere. Coworkers, unrelated TV commercials, everything I look at seems to be hyping the movie. Today on the way home from work, one of those info displays that usually displays traffic warnings read: "I find your lack of seatbelt disturbing"

It's definitely really exciting to be apart of an event as large as this.

I went to a weekly meeting today at a restaurant and we didn't get a thing done because we were all just talking about Star Wars. The old men in the booth behind us heard us and starting talking about it as well.

Every person I talk to seems to be talking about Star Warsand their life in relation to seeing it hahaha.

damn you dudes making me feel worse than i already did for seeing it in 3D

couldnt be helped, family and children and what have you

RE: Spin-offs - Yeah, they're about popular shit, like Han Solo and how the first Death Star plans got stolen, which is about the nth story about that in the EU. I honestly think any retread would be better as one because that shit runs the risk of being a movie ABOUT the series rather than just part of a larger story.

Plus I feel a movie set 30 years after the Sith have been vanquished and the Empire, at worst, have been reduced to a remnant, should have some very big differences, from both the prequels and the originals. I have some suspicions that this is where I'll facepalm when watching TFA, but for now I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

Watching through all the movies with my girlfriend who has never seen the movies before, and we finally got to Episode II. Episode II is the one I've seen the least out of all of the, with maybe 3 full watches. Holy crap this movie is terrible. I know it's been said before, but I tried going in with an open mind, since I'm really trying to see the good in the prequels, but I really couldn't with this film. Anakin breaks this movie by being the worst protagonist in possibly any movie ever. He's kind of like those lame main characters from terrible anime. My girlfriend looks to me and says "This is what your favorite character Darth Vader was like, an immature teenager who can't control his penis" ... it ruined me. Never watching this movie again.

But yay! 48 hrs until episode VII!

My midnight screening is 3D, it was a panic buy and I didn't notice till it was too late.

Will be seeing it in 2D later that day though.

5 and a half hours!!!11!!??3

In my opinion, Episode II Attack of the Clones is the worst of the prequels.

FUCK.

We just had severe storm here and the roof of my cinema for tonight just caved in outside in the foyer. Currently closed until further notice. :((((((

My session starts in 7.5 hours goddammit.

Episode II is definitely the worst of the films. I still really enjoy a lot of its mise-en-scene. Kamino especially is an absolute design delight.

WTF. Damn. :|

So GAF, I'm seeing TFA at 1:20 am, Friday morning. Hopefully I'll be wide awaken then, usually I'm dead asleep at that hour. The 7 and 10:30 pm Thursday showings were sold out, but 1:20 will be a cool time to see a new star wars film with a bunch of amped up fans.

Its gonna be in 3D IMAX 15/70mm, so looking forward to a mind-blowing experience! Haven't seen anything in that format yet. Heard that seeing Interstellar in the same format was pretty amazing.

I've never seen a 3D movie before so I'll be seeing this in 2D. But... I get the feeling I may go see this movie twice in theaters. So if I go a second time, I'll see it in 3D to check out what that experience is like. Star Wars seems like the type of movie/series that would work pretty well in 3D anyway. It might be fun.

It looks like Amazon accidentally posted the digital version of the soundtrack (before figuring it out and removing it). Either way, only a matter of time before it's all over the place now.

If Episode II just focused on Obi-Wan, it would be a decent movie. The battle at Geonosis really drags on for a bit, and the Yoda fight was ridiculous as well, but really it's the Anakin & Padme scenes that freaking ruin the movie. I've TCW and I don't understand how the person I just saw in a movie turns into the general we see in TCW. Really have to credit that series for making Anakin a pretty good character despite the baggage he has.

My girlfriend now has her favorites as V VI IV I II with episode III left tomorrow. I rather enjoyed III a lot, so I can't wait to see it again with her after a couple years of having not seen it.

I don't wanna read reviews. I don't want to know if people think it's good or bad. I want absolutely no influence on my perception of the movie whatsoever before I see it.

So I think I'm bowing out. See y'all on Friday!

Episode III was like the last episode of Blake's 7. It wraps things up so conclusively that you can't tell if you've been done a great favor or if someone just took a shit on the whole series.
