Star Wars: The Force Awakens |OT| A New Hope

agree. She is proven time and time again to be a quality actress. Her performance in AOTC and ROTS will always be a mystery to me.

Things change. Life takes you off in different directions, I guess. I too remember reading something to that effect years ago. In the audio commentary of People vs. George Lucas, Alexandre Phillipe says that Lucas was once quoted as saying that Star Wars would eventually encompass 12 episodes (not nine) in Rolling Stone magazine. I think this was shortly after Empire was released.

That gave me goosebumps. Nice to see that they haven't completely ignored the prequels. The lightsaber choreography in the prequels have always been a favorite of mine.

I loved it at the time, but as an adult and looking back on them they feel too choreographed, like they weren't even trying to hit each other, rather it looked more like a dance or something.

I liked that there was a distinction between the two trilogies. I wouldn't expect the Jedi order to fight like Luke in ROTJ or as the old Obi-wan Kenobi in ANH. It made everything seem a bit more ethereal, poetic, very graceful and thoughtful, even if that is a bit superficial.

One thing I found particularly interesting is that in that the ESB review specifically mentions it being part of a nine-part series. I thought Lucas had always only planned six, but there it is in the original review from 1980

Actually Lucas did say he always meant for there to be nine films to complete the story of the Skywalkers.

And the shooting order was always supposed to be Middle(New Hope, Empire and Return), Beginning(Phantom, Attack, Revenge) and End(Force Awakens, part 8 and 9)

I'm so pumped for this! My parents took me to see the original movie the day it premiered(I'm 43). A bunch of us from my work basically booked an entire back row of a theater for a 5pm 3D showing Friday. :)

Much as I didn't care much for the prequels, I did like the saber fight between Obi Wan and Darth Maul. At least the choreography in that felt brutal and non-choreographed. I also found the Obi Wan fight vs Jango Fett to be refreshing. I hope this new trilogy tries to explore more jedi vs. non jedi confrontations -- at least to shake up the usual formula.

Awesome!

I'm only 28 but the special edition re-releases came out at the perfect time, I was 10 in 1997 and my mom took me to see all 3 of the movies. So while I didn't get the *pure* experience you did, I still got to see them for the first time on the big screen and despite the questionable changes they're more or less the same movies. I am so grateful I got to experience that growing up.

Soooo y'all aren't cool with (fake/joke/or otherwise) story beats in here but we are posting gifs from the duel even if some of us have chosen to go dark since trailer 3?

I glazed over it with a soft focus and I know it was given away in a official doc/people are excited or whatever but come on, that is a visual that should be saved for the theater.

Last thing I wanted was to see a bit of the duel for the first time through a gif....

Saw a review from a small site pop up minutes ago.

Driver and Ridley are the standout stars. Kylo Ren is probably the most conflicted and emotional villain the series has ever had and his performance was outstanding. After many wooden villain performances in the franchise, this was powerful and moving.
It also helped that his mask is off a lot – which is a welcome change and helps us see his vulnerability.
Ridley is a complete newcomer but you could not tell. She shines off the screen and can convey so much with her eyes.

If you're going that dark I'm not quite sure why you're in an official thread for the movie with only a few days to go.

Regardless - I removed the gif just in case.

Does anyone think that the new trilogy will use lightsaber battles more sparingly?

yes, mainly because its going back to like the OT, where there were very few Jedi. Unlike Everything since the PT, where it seems almost like everyone is a jedi.

Which is a very good thing in my opinion.

I'm also 28 and the first time I watched the movies was on VHS recorded from TV (I guess around the same time as you, probably a bit earlier). I don't even know why we had them, it's not like anyone else ever watched the movies. Maybe mom thought I'd want to watch them at some point? Well I'm not complaining.

For anyone who has seen Force Awakens, are there any references to the prequels? And if not, how long will Disney maintain a strict non-prequel policy in their films?

Which got me around to thinking about the world premiere last night. None of the actors from the prequels were interviewed -- aside from Frank Oz. Am I looking too deep into this, or was this damage control on the part of Disney? It just seems that castmembers from the prequels (Liam, Natalie, Ewan) would be more relevant to be interviewed on the red carpet than celebrity fans like Rainn Wilson or Rob Lowe. It's not like they would get trolled, as their careers haven't been damaged, but still, one would think that many entertainment outlets might want to ask them what it might have meant to them to be involved in Star Wars. You had Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher being asked those very questions -- and even if they weren't in those films, they probably would have been attending this premiere anyway.

I'm going now. Thanks to this topic I didn't spoil myself, thank you for the support. May the force be with you all, always. See you on the other side.

Listening to some OSTs to get hype. There's some really great music in the prequels if nothing else. I never really took the time to appreciate Across The Stars until now. It's beautiful

Yeah, idk why I'm in here either lol. But after seeing how people where coming down on guys cracking the most OBVIOUSLY fake spoilers as jokes I didn't think this thread would have anything that wasn't given away in the official trailers, especially considering the marketing was starting to get a little bit loose in the last month. It's whatever, I didn't even really "see" your gif so I'm not mad, just kinda surprised by what people are cool with seeing or talking about heh.

I'll shut up, less than a day away for NA and its already time for others, I can make it!

The Orange County Register (some spoilers in the review)

Now, minus the Ewoks, the gang’s back. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” opens to the American public Thursday evening.

And it is good.

Not great. But far better than “not bad.” Solidly, confidently good.

It’s easily the third-best in the franchise to date, behind the original, renamed “A New Hope” (’77), and “The Empire Strikes Back” (1980). Abrams’s temperament and tastes are sincere and amusing in roughly equal doses, and that’s about right for “Star Wars.”

I like the fact that reviews are good, despite the fact that every reviewer seems to be going about this calmly and actively avoiding this time round the hype filled reviews The Phantom Menace got.

I lost my tickets for the screening tomorrow and I don't think I will be able to find it. This sucks :(

Sorry to hear you are in the same boat Sculli

My girlfriend's never seen the originals (despite her mom being a huge Star Wars fan since the original release) so we've been watching through the Despecialized Edition this week. We finished Empire today and she's looking forward to Friday. Can't wait!
