Final Fantasy IX coming to PC & Smartphones

Yeah, I just assume they'll be streaming the original PSX soundtrack. It was always odd they went with MIDI for VII and VIII, even back in those days.

How so, though? That was still in an era where redbook CD was half a gimmick, and since a sequence format (MIDI) already exists on PC, it wasn't that big of a leap.

Wasn't really till early 00s that streaming formats, especially compressed ones, really took off with gaming. And even then the majority of Square(/Enix)'s console output through PS2 used a sequencer format just due to precedent and workflow.

I do remember that back then, VII PC shipped with a Yamaha soft synth that sounded reasonably close to the PSX version, and you could plug it into whatever high end MIDI module you had as an option

Good, while I absolutely hate Zidane and Kuja's deign and the furry aspect, it's a gr8 game and I'm glad it's coming to PC. X/X2 next I guess.
Next up: Final Fantasy 12.

oh shit that Poe ava, he overshadowed both Boyega and Ridley in the movie, great actor.

FF9 doesn't have a "legit" way to max your stats and getting the Excalibur II is hard as hell. Looking forward to shamelessly buying both of those things as DLC.

Steam isn't far off from having every FF game. Hope they bring over the FFT mobile port which is supposed to be good.

With the rumor that the FFX remake is being ported to PC, we just need mobile or PSP ports of the first two games to have the first 10 entries on PC. If FF12 gets the remake treatment the entire series will be on PC.

Fantastic! Hopefully it could eventually come to PS4 though given they've only done that for VII so far as I know, I'm willing to go with just PC.

Yes, yes he did.

I'm hoping we get a serious FFX/X-2 and FFXII mod scene, honestly. All of those games could stand with some balance tweaks and new features.

Yes yes yes yes YES YES YES. My favorite Final Fantasy and one of my top two games of all time is finally being released from its isolation on the PSX platform! I will buy this on PC and iOS and the only Android device I own is an MP3 player, but I’ll buy it for that too just to show my support for this game. And this also hopefully means a PS4 version at some point! I knew they would have to port this game at some point, because otherwise it would just keep getting harder and harder to milk it for re-releases, and that has always been S-E's M.O. with this franchise.

Here’s hoping they speed up battles a bit even without activating fast forward. And that they add in another way to acquire Excalibur II without speed-running the game. And that they don’t screw it up any beyond that.

2015 was a shitty year for me. I lost my dad and a beloved pet, and not much else went right. This doesn’t make up for all that of course, but here on the final day of the year, it feels like 2015 has made one last gesture as kind of an apology.

Yeah, you're right. I was having trouble remembering when streamed audio became more ubiquitous in PC games. I definitely don't miss the great variance in quality you'd get with sequenced audio (depending on a bunch of factors) back in the day.

High speed mode makes this a day one purchase for me and I'm quite impressed by how good the CG looks in the trailer too.

remember when ps1 cg looked awesome

nothing from that era has survived the passage of time

Not sure I agree.

It looks really nice still. Its a unique product of its time and nothing in modern CG looks like it.

It doesn't look dated to me ,rather looks appealingly antique.

I may grab this on my phone/tablet whilst I wait for a PS4 version to appear. My second favourite in the series second only to XII.

Huh... kinda crazy. Cool to see the game getting ported, though I'll wait to see how good the port is before getting excited. I suspect it'll come up short, given recent efforts.

oh shit

does this mean that, in some way ot another (lets not fight about snes versions vs ios versions), we will actually have every Final Fantasy game on PC?

X / X2 was leaked in the database right?

edit: wait still missing 12. FUCK!

As long as it's not another smartphone -> PC port we should be okay... maybe.

FF2? I dunno

I don't think 9 was ever a thing that was leaked.

They could still do a lot to improve performance of these games on PC, though.

Could be day one for me unless they screw it up somehow. Hopefully it doesn't take long for someone to mod the interface when SE inevitably leave the mobile UI in the PC version.

I was just talking about this a few days ago when showing my nephew my Vivi toy, saying i wished this would come to pc, damn someone must have heard me, so glad i logged on today to check neogaf, great news indeed.

Yeeaaahhh, maybe. I hope it's good.

Looking at the screenshots also made me start thinking, "what if Chrono Cross came to PC?" Stylistically, they're kinda similar, and now that I've thought about it... I want that to happen, too.

VIII Steam had a wonky batch of music files, but that was most likely due to rendering off the PC version with <generic MIDI module> rather than going off the PSX version, an error which cannot happen with IX since there was no prior PC version.

But now, you can install a midi player like coolsoft virtualmidisynth and some fantastic Midi Soundfont of length bigger than the memory of PC of that time (some soundfont are multiple 100MB large).

Midi can be fabulous now.

I remember being like 10 years old and going to hangout with my friend at his house. He started playing this and I was fucking blown away. It tied with OoT with it's ability to mystify my young mind. I've always kept my original disks (which were the disks he gave me when he beat the game). I've been wanting to go back and play this one, so hopefully it's a good port and my jaded attitude towards modern SE doesn't fuck it up.

It would be incredibly nice to have a FF7-9 PS4 physical collection ,but its also incredibly unlikely.

Damn, I'd buy that no questions asked. Capcom has the right idea doing it for their RE HD ports with Origins Collection, so maybe Square will similarly follow suit.

I dont know whats a bigger surprise, ff9 remaster or kagari's avatar change =P

but seriously, this is great news. Now we just need 12 and crisis core I think.
