Looks like the update is likely old. Poked around the discord chat and they're all dismissing it.

For what it's worth, when I go into HL2's properties in steam, it's using 3610 MB and the content build ID is 392286.

My thoughts: The Grim Fandango and Undertale connections are that these games both have a noir art style to them. Grim Fandango is a Noir point and click adventure game, Undertale has a stark black and white art style. Ikaruga gives a red hearing badge because it doesn't fall under those categories. Though interestingly enough, the gameplay in Ikaruga uses a black and white bullet mechanic. Maybe there is a connection to the colours black and white?
Also, the hidden pixel images of the Crowbar and Lambda symbol are in black in white too when you alter the black and white levels.

From what I've read on the reddit, it seems like if you click "view full size" for that image, it doesn't have the lambda logo. So that makes it seem actually intentional, rather than a coincidence.
I was already sure it was intentional, cause it's be hard to get that randomly, but damn that's pretty solid...

There being an actual badge that anyone can obtain cements it for me, something Valve are involved with is definitely happening here. What it is exactly... not too sure about that.

I always felt like that Stars of Blood game Valve cancelled about space pirates was their Destiny/Borderlands. They cancelled it a few years ago. Maybe they saw how popular Destiny/Borderlands became and they decided to greenlight it again. Gabe did the podcast with Keighley not too long ago saying it was the hardest decision he ever had to make. Maybe he had a change of heart.
I think Steam actually needs one of those big MMOFPS type games. Activision never released Destiny on Steam and Borderlands kinda died down. I can see a game like that being huge on steam pulling Dota/CSGO #s.

The disappointing thing about this is that like those games, the comic itself has a noir style. So once again, this could all just relate to the ending of the comic.
ARGs take months to create. What you're saying is possible but why spend that long on something for the ending to a comic that less than 1% of the steam userbase reads?
People are saying there's a beta update for HL2.
But they update their games all the time for various reasons, so.
Also maybe it's a beta that's existed for a while.

you are suppose to type the word: "search" (without the quotes) into the search bar, and it should open up a new password box.
It was something that I tried too, but couldn't get to work either. Maybe there was a limited number of red hearing badges?
Don't use the link, use the instructions -- open the Ikaruga store page in Internet Explorer (or Chrome), type "SEARCH" in the search box without quotes and press enter, and then enter the 1v7531 password in the box that comes up.

It's not exactly clear from the various info around but you have to type search while on the page and not with any element focused, then press Enter. After that paste 1v7531 in the popup, then confirm with the 'OK' button.
Not the search box, just type it on the page. Similar to entering the GAF Gold easter egg on GAF.

Yes, that is what I meant. But I found the problem, the prompt box doesn't work in FireFox. I had to use IE to enter in the password. Blizzard's post helped me out.

In Chrome just press enter on the page, then type search, and press enter again to get it to pop up. Has to be on a game page.
Try using SEARCH in all caps.
If that doesn't work, try clicking away from the search box so nothing is focused, and then just typing "SEARCH" and pressing enter.
If that doesn't work either, Internet Explorer should do it.

Valve has done it before, they made a TF2 ARG that ending in the release of a TF2 comic (though that comic did tie into the release of the MVM gamemode, which was a pretty major new co-op gamemode for TF2).
Man i was so excited for this just from the concept art. Hope Valve goes back to it one day.
Plot twist: "What you want to work on" at Valve turns out to be ARGs.

I'm not getting how they figured out to enter "Bullet Hell" on the Undertale page, unless they were just trying anything they could think of.
Undertale is a bullet hell game as far as I know.

Undertale is a western made JRPG but its battle systems functions like a bullet hell shooter basically. So it's not that far off to try it out.
After about 5 hours of nothing, someone discovered a hidden number on anyones profile who have done the holiday badge
