The Fighting Game Noob Thread: From Scrub to Master

For 720s you can't really do them standing still, you either need to buffer it during a jump, dash, or during another special move. For 360 motions I just do the full 360 since it's easier for my brain to keep track of it that way. I find them easier to do on pad since you can really feel where your finger is sliding while you're doing it.

This is a pretty good video on shortcuts for 360 motions.

I'm not versatile enough in real world shit to commit to anything like a solid training regimen. but I'm still subscribed to this topic because it's sooo up there with life goals I wish I could accomplish. All that said, I reeeeally want to watch yo folk learn in real time -- can the pleeeease be a ScrubGaf stream put up every once in a while? I get a hell of a lot of enjoyment and motivation from watching low-level-but-committed matches.

360s are actually 270s, at least in SFIV. You can spin in any direction clock or counterclock wise.

The reason why it works is, it's because jumps actually have startup. Your goal is to finish the motion and input before the character jumps.

EDIT: As the poster below said. You don't even need a full 270. Finish with up forward and that will do it too. In general with each game you just have to test out the input leniency.

One shortcut I know is half quarter circle fwrd, upforward punch. You'll not jump and is easy to do on a dpad. You can also buffer the motion during dash ins, wakeups, certain normals and I believe during focus attacks.

So much easier than doing the full 360 if you are not jumping in. But I'm no grappler user, only just discovered those tricks via youtube. Stunned at how easy it was to pull off.

Definitely going to try Gief in V now.

A half circle motion ending in up/forward doesn't sound too bad. If a 720 is just doing two of these motions that sounds pretty do-able! Not raw standing 720 do-able just yet, but I might actually consider using Zangief in SFV. Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the vid. I'll try practicing some of this.

You cant go wrong either way with a pad or stick, however the Dpad for ps4 is dreadful look into a fighting game pad.

I got an arcade stick for super years ago took me about two months to be comfortable but I'll say this once you go with a stick is hard to go back to pad just ask my homie JayEh. I say give a shot Rean for the record I'm biased XD certain stuff are just smoother like fadc's and fireball wars, supers on reversal is quicker to do as well. At times playing on pad a shoryu would come out but thats mostly do to shortcuts inputs -.- that's just my preference.

I've chosen Xrd as the game I want to prep for SFV. I've got a month to get the basics. I've got replay uploading now and could use critique.

I chose Xrd instead of continuing dedicating time to USFIV because SFV has a more in your face game where rushdown is a big part of the balancing act with footsies and good defense and GG kinda requires those things. I also lack a mean offense game and need help with applying creativity to my oki game, and GG again, provides that. I think GG will help with execution a lot as well.

For this, I've chosen I-no as my main for now.

I think I get the general idea with her. Use the projectile to play mind games with your opponent and use her dash to hop almost KOF style in and wreck shit. But applying that is hard right now since I got the game just yesterday's A heavy pressure character that has a lot of means to get the knockdown and a mean wakeup game is exactly what the doc ordered.

Here's an alright fight with Blackule.

Here is is. I really struggle against Ky.

http://youtu.be/_wIHb0gAwA8
Ky is one of her hardest matches since he has really good neutral and, well, she doesn't. I dont have much time atm, but here's some notes (some of these will apply to Sol, too):

-Try and use HCL or tk fireballs to destroy his symbols.
-You want to have a fireball out (usually tk from mid-full screen, moves faster) to help your approach
-6p is great to throw out from mid range of you think Ky will f.S
-2S is your farthest poke (sadly not a low in this game)
-stbt will go under fireballs

I'll have more when I get home.

Thanks!

Time to watch that Xrd tutorial series on youtube and grind out training mode! :) Less fighting, more training!

One thing I noticed about her is a very weak anti-air game. Why do I like characters weak anti-air?! lol

English voices ewwww

Haha! I haven't changed them yet!

Don't be afraid to jump or superjump back, fireball, guide it to your opponent, and then use it to cover your approach.

How would you recommend getting videos from the games, anyway?

I mean, Ultra Street Fighter IV has a built in Youtube uploader, which I can imagine being enough for this purpose (unless there's something horrible about it), but I haven't used that before. I can just pick any saved replay and upload it, right? Otherwise, I guess I'll have to mess with nVidia ShadowPlay to get a video file. That shouldn't be too hard. Then the hard part is uploading to Youtube.

I take it there are no copyright issues as long as I don't monetize anything, since that would be really stupid with a built-in uploader.

Capture card is still the best way, though for modern consoles, you can use their in-game recording tools I suppose.

I monetize my videos without issue. Companies usually don't waste their time on this stuff.

You can use the in-built recorder on a PS4. I use an Elgato HD.

I'll be working on this execlusively. Need to get used to the normals of I-no as if I'm blindfolded. I'll be going through arcade mode and training mode training and only using base normals to space and anti-air.

If you're going to record it from a program like fraps or whatever, have Bandicam at the ready to convert the file into an mp4. The in-game youtube uploader is fine (for me anyways, not for others) but be sure to put the settings to low for maximum frame rate during the uploaded video.

You both play so slowly/passively, just staying on the ground and kind of walking back and forth using some normals. I kept screaming in my head "DO SOMETHING!" haha. Have you watched footage of high level I-no? If not, it's good to get an idea of what high level play looks like. Also, you can use this site(if you don't already know about it) to easily find match footage if you want ideas of how to handle specific match-ups.

edit: url fix

I'll be playing on PC, don't have a PS4.

Well, I got nVidia Shadowplay running, it looks really good, tossed some Sonic Generations and Metal Gear Rising at it, and it recorded just fine. Comes out in mp4, but the file size is huge.

I suppose this is for later. I need to worry about what characters to focus on for my USF4 warmup to SFV. I like Rose and Sakura. But I'm looking at Karin and R. Mika for SFV (and a pocket Ryu or Ken, likely), so I'm not entirely sure if I should pick someone like them. I don't want to play Ryu in USF4, because I plan to actually play Ryu in SFV. That's how bad muscle memory is formed.

So, got any Rose tips, maybe? Three "don'ts", and a tip for her Ultra 2 would be nice. I like that satellite thing, and I'm sure it does something really neat to the momentum of a match when Rose pops those... but I don't see exactly what to do with them.

If I want to practice Karin, I'm looking at Fei Long, aren't I? I don't like Fei Long all that much. I do like Makoto, but she is... perhaps not a good fundamentals character.

Poison has fireballs and they're an extremely important part of her game, not really comparable to Karin just because she has a rekka(Karin doesn't even get hers without meter).

Is this effective Xrd space control?

http://youtu.be/MA45iCae74U

I feel like I'm pushing the wrong buttons for anti-air but maybe I'm wrong.

Have you watched guilty gear crash course? It's not character-specific, but for each general concept presented in the videos, there are notes in the description specifically what to do with your character. James Chen and Henry Choi did a bunch of xrd videos including character-by-character overviews which can give you a good general idea of what your character is supposed to be doing. I-no's is here, and it's probably especially good since Henry Choi mains her.

I linked to the crash course above. The first lesson is space control so that's what I'm working on.

Thanks for the I-no vid.

I made a Discord Chat for Fighting Game GAF - this might help everyone coordinate matches, but also chat during matches without having to worry about a posting limit or hoping that the opponent refreshes the page. SmashGAF loves it:

As a 25 year old, I wonder if it's worth even getting back into fighting games. I wish this thread appeared when I was 21 lol.

It's a bit difficult to keep track of all of my moves in Xrd, especially as Venom. Sometimes I just completely forget about Mad Struggle, and I've never played a charge character before so I forget to have Carcass Raid ready when I want it.

English voices ewwww

Can you really deny the appeal of English voice Chipp and Axl? If only there was a by-character selection like Street Fighter.

I-no 6p is actually one of the better ones. J.p air to air is good, too

For the first time since I started using it about 3 months ago, it looks like their servers are having trouble, lol. Great timing. -_-

Anyway Cindi, if a lot of folks here join, it looks like you can give titles to people in the chat. If folks want to get titles like "Mentor" and "Mentee", that's something we could explore.

I feel like you're at the bare minimum age of the average FG player. The majority of people I've met offline is like late twenties or early thirties.

Just got DoA5: Last Round on PS4, hooray for fighting games.

360 grabs with Hayabusa are difficult and my little brother insists on doing them lol. He's gonna go pro with that dedication, I can feel it (or at least not get bodied online.) Anyone here got some general Hayabusa tips for the new fighter?

Ask in the FGW thread if you don't get a response here - ShinMaruku is really knowledgeable about DoA5.

That said, I just bought the game and don't know what I'm doing. Maybe we should spar?

I'm still trying to understand how Aksys screwed up the English dub for Xrd to the extent that they did. With BB, it's easy to go either way, English or Japanese. For Xrd, the English voices are such a mixed bag, leaning largely toward the negative, that the few voices that are okay just aren't worth it over sticking with the original Japanese (and there's also potential bias toward those being the voices one would be most used to hearing those characters sound like if they played the older games, for the majority of the ones who weren't recast between games anyway).

I suppose I could just blame the voice direction.

This is my first post in this thread. I usually post in the community thread, but I'll need to start paying attention to this too.

I love fighting games, but I don't play them nearly as much as I used to. My job and being needed around my house keep me away from fighting games(particularly playing online) most of the time, but I still genuinely love fighting games, and I still want to play and continue to learn the ones that I love.

So, to try and better use my free time, I want to start playing hour long online sessions with folks when I have time off of work. An hour is a good solid amount of time for online play, as least in my opinion. I play almost every fighting game, some more seriously than others.

I'm not too concerned with going to tournaments, I just enjoy playing and learning fighting games. It's my favorite hobby. I'll keep checking the thread to see if folks want to play, and I'll start using the Discord server; just one thing: I seldom use voice chat. I'm...shy, and have a speech impediment.

*ahem*

With all that said, thanks to Cindi for making this thread, and thanks to all who enjoy playing fighting games!

Eh, Venom doesn't seem like much of a charge character and he doesn't have that many special moves either. I think Sol has more specials than that and he is supposed to be pretty vanilla. It's probably easier to keep track of special moves if you know how and when to use them. If you don't have a use for a tool or know what its good for, its pretty obvious that you would forget about it.

I know what they're for, you just need to be thinking 2 moves ahead to optimize Carcass Raid, which I'm not used to because I never play charge characters. Doesn't matter if you would consider Venom or anyone in Guilty Gear to really be a charge character, since he has two charge moves I'm not using them very well.

1 charge move = charge character.

The 360 is broken down into 3 different inputs that you must nail for it to work. the start is 2369, second is 987, last is 4123 it's all timing based. You can also do a combo into it as well which just needs the last 2 parts.

Hayabusa is a strike and grapler hybrid, his game plan is to poke and harass until he can throw you either being a counter throw or a throw punish.
