Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I don't think it that controversial, everyone admit that the game was very good. It's the price/content stuff that did bothered people.

Really? All I kept hearing was stuff like "Man, that game is so over-rated," "Didn't live up to the hype," "meh," "Gimicky," etc. At least no one else in my social circle seems to like it. But if that's the case I'm happier.

Not really sure why you have TLR listed together with the other 2 when it has a form of turn based combat, while the others are pure action combat. Also not sure why Tales is on that list either when it has more rpg elements than the majority of rpgs that come out today. Not really sure why it's so hard for some to get it through their heads that a game can be part of multiple genres and be defined by each of them. When did "rpg" suddenly become a term that's looked down upon like "mmo" is? Like it's crazy how defensive Destiny players get when you tell them they're playing an mmo (when the majority of it's features are ripped straight from mmos), like it's the worst kind of taint to them.

I used Last Remnant as a point of comparison. My point is just that if you're going to throw the JRPG label on everything with leveling mechanics ("RPG elements"), you're making it into a useless label. At that point you might as well consider the Devil May Cry games and Resident Evil 4 "JRPGs".

1. Spelunky is the best game of the 360/PS3/Wii generation and it isn't even fucking close.

2. Dark Souls is great (not controversial), and it's better than anything Nintendo has ever created, and is likely ever to create.

3. Super Meat Boy is the best platforming game ever made.

4. Going back to Nintendo (and probably rehashing an old post I had in one of these threads).. the NES versions of Mario/Zelda/Metroid are superior to all iterations afterward, and especially the the 3-D incarnations of Mario and Zelda. I also feel this holds true for Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior games.

5. In tandem with #4. Every Nintendo platform is a letdown from the one before, yet I still enjoy what they produce today.

6. Outside of Bloodborne, there wasn't a good AAA game in 2015.

Sounds like you just like challenging games?

Total Biscuit makes terrible videos.

If you think the Snes isn't better than the NES, you are straight up lying.

I've always felt like the SNES was a bit of a letdown compared to the NES. I traded my Sega Genesis and bunch of games when I was in 8th grade in order to get the SNES right away to play Mario World and FFIV.

I loved the hell out of that machine, but as the years have passed, I find that I still prefer the NES slightly to the SNES, mostly due to my other point of preferring the NES Zeldas, Metroid, and Marios, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Warrior. Also Punchout.

Sounds like you just like challenging games?
I think I really take to games that don't tell you all their secrets, and I think it took Dark Souls to realize it. Take the NES Zelda 1 vs ALTTP. I loved the exploration of Zelda, which I played for over a year trying to find all the stuff on my own. When I first played Zelda 3, I was wowed by the polish of the game, but most of the secret areas are telegraphed visually, and I felt like they strapped on the kiddy gloves. I still play it and love it, its just that I prefer the older ones.

NES metroid better than the later ones?

Lmao you crazy

Except for the password system and having to regain your health, it's better in every way for me.

Oh boy, do I have quite a few.

I think Final Fantasy XIII is a fantastic game and a large improvement from X which also suffered from being a bit too linear, as XIII did not have random encounters to discourage any form of exploration. Added to this, I adore the character Vanille and how sweet and uplifting she is as a character. On the flip side of FF, I detest Final Fantasy IV and consider it to be highly generic. Like, it was the first in the series to have an emphasis on plot, but the plot is like a normal medieval fantasy like world, and I feel like its such a waste.

I believe Nobuo Uematsu is the worst of Square Enix's selection of composers, and that Hamauzu, Shimomura, Ishimoto, and Sakimoto are much better more interesting composers. I especially adore Yoko Shimomura and Hitoshi Sakimoto, and they're part of my main reasons for being so excited for KHIII, FFXV, Paper Mario: Paper Jam, and Odin Sphere Leifthreiser. (note that I know these aren't all Square games, but rather that some of them are games with these composers)

I believe Kingdom Hearts 1 aged like milk and that the lack of combo change, poor camera, and large emphasis on platforming hurt it tremendously as a game, something sequels fixed.

I believe most Western games in general are highly generic and derivative of each other, and I dislike the large focus on realism and lack of challenging and rewarding boss battles. I also don't like the Hollywood-esque soundtracks a lot of these games have, as I'd like it if music was a bit more melodic and catchy, and tried harder to be more unique.

I believe Square Enix is probably the best video game company out there and most consistent in its providing high quality titles. Nier, Drakengard 3, Kingdom Hearts 1.5/2.5, Bravely Default, Kingdom Hearts DDD, TWEWY....I like Square.

I believe Nier is the closest to perfect a video game has ever gotten, despite its flaws. Its just so strong in what it does, and even gameplay wise I appreciate its-Zelda like travel and combat.

Forgive me for bringing this one up, but its probably the most controversial gaming related thing I can say here that I have: I don't think Gamergate is a bad group. Note that I'm not saying its a good group either, but rather that I believe it to be something of a mixed bag of terrible and good things. Sort of like having good intentions but doing bad deeds-like thing, but not exactly. (I'm sorry if this sours up the thread; I don't intend to do so but you did ask for controversial gaming related opinions)

I have no idea what the hell this means. It would be like saying "sculptures aren't an artform; making sculptures is an art form." What kind of a distinction is that?

And why is game design more like architecture than like sculpture or painting or filmmaking? Are you suggesting that designing a building is art, but skilled and beautiful masonry work is not art?

I think he means what they're more similar to.

He's half-right; games are art but by different metrics from film and other storytelling arts, as are sculpture/architecture/etc.

I feel you OP. I think Majoras Mask might be one of the most ballsy games around, but as soon as there is a timer in a game I'm way too stressed. And this game is all about that.

1. I thought The Last of Us was a random game. I didn't hate it, but it felt like I played that a lot. Pretty much every zombie movie cliché is here, so no emotionnal attachement (except for the excellent ending), and the gameplay is what you expect from a random Resident Evil 4 inspired horror game. Nothing more, nothing less.

2. I also happen to think Diablo 2 and 3 (never played 1st game) are incredibly boring and uninteresting. I don't know much about hack'n slash, but I thought Dungeon Siege 3 was cooler (thank you Obsidian).

3. And to finish, I think Virtue's Last Reward might be the shittiest game I've ever played. Everything is horrendous besides the main story idea that I won't spoil for people who want to suffer through terrible character design, horrible dialogs, shitty rythm, uninteresting puzzles and terribly dumb themes to experience it themselves.

Basically every fantasy settings in a game is executed poorly. If I have to pick up one more Cudgel of Zanthor or slay one more skeleton...

Windows is a plague on PC gaming. Modern Windows is terrible. The appeal in consoles is never having to use it.

You still need a mouse and keyboard when you have your comfy couch PC setup which makes the whole thing kind of unwieldy. I like a clean living room. Steam big picture mode is not a solution, it's a hasty bandaid. The steam controller requires steam big picture mode? What are you, crazy? Maybe in the next few years the situation will be better, but it's not great right now.

KB + M is one of the top reasons RTS and MOBA are a thing

I wouldn't call it boring but I do think it sits in a shitty location on the action/rpg spectrum. It's like the most basic action mechanics mixed with the most basic of RPG mechanics to the point it couldn't stand on its own in either genre.

Yeah. Haven't played enough of them, but they seem rather meat and potatoes. Which really makes me head tilt really hard when someone considers it one of the main things they look for in a system when much superior options are out there.

Except for the password system and having to regain your health, it's better in every way for me.

As much as I still love the NES, the only two of the aforementioned that hold up for me in comparison are Mario 2 (not the best, but still the most unique), Mario 3 (still the best in the series) and Zelda II (great and in a class of its own). The aforementioned have the following strikes against them:

- Preferring DQ1 and FF1 is justifiable only by pure nostalgia. Dragon Quest did come of age by the third game, but the entire series has been remade for newer systems, and the series' best game, DQV, was on the SNES. Final Fantasy meanwhile is a little spotty in retrospect on the NES/Famicom, the remakes of the first two are everywhere, and three got a little too difficult. The series really got going with IV on the SNES, and V and VI are among the best ever.

- Zelda 1 may be a little more challenging than LttP, but often for the wrong reasons, i. e. hints, and especially maneuverability of Link. The latter also makes the game a bit monotonous. The later 2d ones actually made movement and combat fun. Slashing motion Link just feels more right.

- Metroid 1 has too little variation in area design, and not very many varied collectibles or objectives. Simple game prolonged by size. Worse are the physics, especially when Samus gets stuck in lava.

- Punch-Out! vs. Super Punch-Out! is more a matter of preference I guess.

I think Diablo is the worst of Blizzard's big IPs. The games have fantastic atmosphere and enjoyable/decent lore and characters, but the heavy focus on looting and grinding is so unfun. Some mechanics like the endless hordes of enemies respawning when you quit the game in Diablo 2 make the games even less fun ._. I wonder how good the IP could have been if it was RTS like Warcraft and Starcraft. Or straight up RPGs without excessive looting and grinding.

Out of all the things to praise about Diablo you praise the lore and characters? Love the gameplay and loot of 3, couldn't care less about anything else lol

Diablo lore was great until 2/Lord of Destruction. 3 shit the bed but it was good and compelling until that point.

Regarding gameplay opinions may vary, but when it comes to the music, NES version of Metroid has one of the most iconic sci-fi tracks, far surpassing Super Metroid.

Super Metroid music while good feels far too bloated

Irenicus' Dungeon (Baldur's Gate 2) is actually one of the best starts to any game despite the apparent dislike it gets. It has the perfect balance of serving as a tutorial and not holding the players hand. It features almost everything a good D&D (or any) dungeon needs: light puzzles, loot, interesting NPCs, interesting visual design, traps, actual sense of danger...

The main reason people seem to dislike it is that in the end it is pretty linear start before the game opens up more but that is how the game should begin. We only have ourselves to blame for playing it over and over and not settling with a character ;). It isn't even that long.

Also how can you hate anything that features the iconic return of friggin Minsc?

I hope Half-Life 3 never gets made because I get way more pleasure from the "Half-Life 3 confirmed!" jokes than I could ever possibly get from the game.

This isn't really a controversial opinion but this seemingly new trend of having "We need to talk about..." or "This thing really needs discussing" as a thread title is the new most annoying thing on GAF.

This isn't the UN, nothing NEEDS discussing. Just state what you want to talk about and your opinion, stop being so melodramatic like every piece of DLC is a human rights offence.

The Force Unleashed was a fun game.

edit:

Can we talk about The Force Unleashed?

Naughty dogs are great but are overrated. They make one of the most safest bets when it comes to story and game design. lethargic is the best way to description ND gameplay.

Also kojima >>>>>George Lucas

Out of all the things to praise about Diablo you praise the lore and characters? Love the gameplay and loot of 3, couldn't care less about anything else lol

I have some opinions on Diablo

First of all: PC version is way superior to the console version when it comes to controls and interface. The interface especially is a complete turd when playing in local co-op. No simultaneous inventory management sucks. I don't understand why this version gets so much praise when difect controls are unnecessary in a game where all you do is spam a couple of attack buttons and the rest is inventory management.

Also the game is boring, generic and extreme repetitive. I dropped the local co-op run after 10-15h because the game was simply boring. Mountains of crap loot and millions of enemies in dull dungeons, nothing more.

Divinty: Original Sin EE runs circles around Diablo when it comes to playing a RPG in local co-op (interface, different gameplay mechanics, etc.)

Bloodborne didn't deserve to be GOTY. Dark Souls II is a better game.

Fallout 4 is amazing. Sure it can get repetitive after a while but the world and atmosphere are fantastic. All the environmental storytelling, and the mini stories that you get in each location are what this game is all about.

I have quite a few lol.

- Halo is not great, and it never was.

- Sunset Overdrive is the best game of the new generation thus far.

- Jak 3 is Naughty Dog's best game.

- Jak X is amazing.

- TLOU should not get a sequel.

- GTA V is boring.

- inFamous 1 was the best in the series
THAT TWIST!
.

- MGS V is overrated.

- The XBox One is aesthetically better than the PS4

Oh, and Uncharted's shooting mechanics are extremely satisfying!

I liked Chrono Cross more than Trigger.

I think Mass Effect is really overrated, and Dragon Age is a much better Bioware saga.

I think FF VII does not deserve that much a hype.

Mario and Luigi Dream Team Bros is the best M&L game.

I liked MGS V's ending, even though it was very obvious before even playing the game.

Insomniac games' marketing for Sunset Overdrive was way too tryhard from the same folks who had just released Fuse and turned RFoM into CoD with a sequel.

To top it off, they went exclusive to maintain ownership of the IP... One with a YouTube personality character creator and full of "memeslolz".

I liked the idea of the game but the marketing and decision making behind it just had me facepalming.

The AI leaders in Civ 5 are so fucking stupid. I get attacked, so I fight back, and now my friends and allies are pissed at me for being a warmonger.

Hah! So my friendly AI that spit on me for attacking (defending actually, as I had a defensive agreement) a Civ now wants to declare war on that same one and wipe him out I guess. WTF...

Metal Gear Solid is the only good game in the MGS franchise. The stealth mechanics and core gameplay are solid throughout all the games (and even then, I found MGS 3 and 4 boring), but the story is appallingly bad, and if a game series wants to spend so much time tooting its own horn about story through hours and hours of cutscenes, it can't be trite nonsense featuring fat pyromaniacs on rollerblades, possessed appendages or a sequence where I run around naked while my commanding officer tells me how to prune chrysanthemums. And I'm utterly flabbergasted by the amount of praise Hideo Kojima gets from the gaming community in general. I think the way Konami treated him was shameful, don't get me wrong, but I also don't get the point of touting the genius of someone who writes a female character who has to run around naked because if she puts on clothes she will literally die. Kojima made a great game and then completely ruined it with his awful, awful storytelling.

You know, in my opinion, and all.

I really can't get into Vanquish. Its the sort of game I should as well. I liked Bayo and loved MGR. Don't have a Nintendo so haven't tried Wonderful 101 or Bayo 2 but they look up my alley as well. But Vanquish was just all around meh. Gave it 3 different goes over the course of a year or 2 and each time got no further then somewhere in chapter 4. So I gave it a decent go. The guns just felt weak, the movement felt ok I suppose, but you were pretty limited with how often you could slide (the best thing about the movement) and I don't think there was much in the way of melee options (its been a while, there may have been). Also I didn't think that much of the much touted bosses. There were 1 or 2 okay ones, but nothing beyond 'shoot the big glowy weakpoint'. Lots.

GAF love for the game was what made me give it attempts 2 and 3 as well :(

On the contrary I have a lot of love for Ninja Blade, a game that has the same developer name on the box as the much loved Souls/Borne series, but it is literally like it doesn't exist on GAF. I don't think there was even an OT for it. Love the idea of action games that are more or less just boss battle after boss battle. MGR was nearly like that too. Another reason that I really like the game extends to my 3rd point......

QTE's are ok by me. For me, having even minimal input into crazy shit happening on the screen, is better then sitting there watching a cutscene with zero input. Admittedly some games do them better then others though. I also don't understand why the God of War games (which played a big part in popularising them) get a pass for theirs, when they are no better then most other games that get knocked for daring to have them. The aforementioned Ninja Blade actually did them pretty well. It would rate you on how well you timed the press, and reloads were quick if you failed. You would also rarely have to repeat a sequence of more then 2 or 3 if you stuffed up and had to redo them. Plus the craziest of crazy shit went down in them.

Anyway, good to get that off my chest. Been meaning for a while to post in here

The souls series lore isn't as deep as some fans say. It's like English class where the author states that the wall was blue and the teacher tells you that this color expresses the author's self loathing. Sometimes the wall is simply blue. No more no less.

I think it sucks that these high profile developers / games opt for the crowdfunding route when publishers would have fully funded them anyways.

I honestly, truly believe PC fanboys to be the most insufferable of all fandom. It's not even about games with them, it's about specs and hardware and it's kind of weird. They seem unable to understand that PC gaming doesn't appeal to the vast majority of people.

I think it sucks that these high profile developers / games opt for the crowdfunding route when publishers would have fully funded them anyways.

On the flip side, I think it's great because it allows the consumer to dictate the games they want to see by putting their money where their mouth is because publishers aren't fully funding these games, which is the problem.

It just doesn't feel quite right to me for several reason. They're getting a lot of money up front with no legal binding agreement to deliver on a finished product; it's potentially taking attention away from small indie devs who may truly be in dire need of funding; the funding received won't cover the full development cost, so a publisher is still needed but now they've taken a big slice of the crowdfunding pie.

Haha I've been noticing it too and I agree.

It's 2016. Am I the only one who finds this problematic?

I prefer the PS3 controller to the PS4 one.

Yo! You are not alone, and neither am I. DS3 feels so good man, it's perfect for me.

Pertaining to the thread topic; another thread that I saw earlier made me realize this, but I truly believe that trophies and achievements are the absolute worst thing about current video game culture, followed closely by the weeboo anime bullshit that's so popular in JRPG's right now.

A JRPG, funnily enough, made me recently remember how I hate trophies/achievements - you can't use someone else's clear save file with LoH: Cold Steel to start the game on NG+ right away, as they're account-bound due to, you guessed it, fucking trophies. Now I have to finish the game twice if I want to see everything, and I really don't have the time for that. I like to fuck around with cheats, edited save files and whatnot in single player games, they add a crazy amount of replay value for me. Thanks to the achievement system in modern gaming, stuff like that is mostly gone.

Thankfully more and more games are getting ported to PC, though.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing > Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

I don't get peoples hardon for Transformed. I like the very fast pace of the first game, and being on the ground only means that the tracks have incredible flow. Transforming into a boat and going into water physics or transforming into a plane taking to the skies slows the game down. It doesn't feel as fast anymore.

It's like playing Marvel vs Capcom 2 on Normal speed instead of Turbo 1.

I feel like I'm the only person on the planet with this opinion? Maybe the majority prefers gimmicky kart racers instead of the raw thrills experience?
