Ancient Aliens: New Nin. 3DS now offers the best SNES emulation on any handheld

Thanks! I'll figure it out. I'm using homemenu atm, hope I can get it working.

No idea what I'm doing wrong :( Menuhax is weird as hell and super confusing, moreso than I remember it being
You just download the starter pack (don't replace the boot file if you want to keep your menu, but you should probably upgrade whatever that is too) and run the hax installer through whichever boot menu you use.

Since I installed it, Retroarch has completely stopped working :/

I'll get back to this in a few. I'm not too bummed out anyway because I've been wanting to get a few new 3DS games and I know doing so most likely will disable the emulator and stuff, but I was really hoping to be able to play Mother 3 on the system :/ oh well! I'll find a way, or hopefully Nintendo will release it in america

probably not though :P

If everything is up-to-date it works, otherwise all hell would break loose on here.

Just take a break and try again.
Gotcha. I might make a separate folder or something to organize it instead of lumping it all together. That may have been my problem

If I can get this to work properly I will be ecstatic

Having troubles with this...

I updated to the 12/11 nightlies; I wanted to see if I could get GBA running faster, and whenever I open up any emulator I get this message:

"unsupported version

Please update your payload"

Any ideas on what I can do? (

I'd like to piggyback on this. I hadn't
messed with anything since early november and then had the same problem. Updated my payload after doing some research, but now the retroarch emulators cannot find any of my roms. They are in the same folders on the SD card, but when I go to load a game it shows the directory as empty. Any ideas?

Yea, now mine is saying that there's a problem and I should contact Nintendo.

Woops! Oh well, I tried. Maybe I'll try again in the future but for now I think I'm donezo trying to emulate on the 3DS.

so what is considered the "best" version/release of retroarch? im downloading the latest nightly but since ive never used it before, dont know if there is a better release i should be using instead

uhhh so I updated my 3ds the other night not realizing it might break this. Whenever I click on the youtube app it says I need to update it and it won't boot to homebrew. Did I break it?

Probably? You should always assume, every time, that a new update will break any homebrew stuff you are using.

Hadn't updated Retroarch in ages, so grabbed the latest nightly. Mother 3 is stuttering like a motherfucker right now. Am I missing something that might be enabled that shouldn't be?

Edit: Woops. I had loaded mgba by mistake instead of gpsp.

Edit2: Though it's still pretty bad when fading in/out.

You should have only used the YouTube app once to install the hack.

What happens when you hold L during boot?

NES Emulators crashed my Windows partition on my MacBook yesterday. I don't think I want to try a "hack" like this on my 3DS, but I'm glad the possibilities are out there.

That is pretty much the most nonsensical comparison I have ever heard.

Haha. So this homebrew is worth trying? The MacBook doesn't have an SD drive, but the PC in my house does so I might be able to put it on there.

But what does it run if not roms?

Edit: to be fair it does sound like some people are having issues with this. Couldn't it potential mess up my system?

You could quite easily mess up your own system.

The emulators can't.

whats the best core to play resource intensive snes games? ive been using catsfc, but only get about 40 - 45 fps in ff6.. thats the game im most interested in having on the go

yoshis island is unplayable but i assumed that it would be

Apologies for the derpy question—what core do I use to run SegaCD games? Just the Genesis core? I'm assuming it's possible since there are instructions on GBATemp for using a SegaCD bios.

Edit: Derp, sorry for the double post.

By "resource intensive" you probably mean special chip games. This includes Yoshi's Island.

Use PocketSNES for these games. I haven't tried Yoshi's Island but Kirby Super Star works very well.

Essentially, on a New 3DS you want to use:
—PocketSNES for any special chip game
—catsfcplus for everything else

Edit: Wait, Final Fantasy 3/6 is giving you problems in catsfc? That's not a special chip game, so it should be running at full speed. Are you on an Old 3DS or a New 3DS?

If you're on an Old 3DS, try SNES9x first, and if that still doesn't work, give BLARGSNES a try. Note that the latter isn't part of retroArch.

Edit2: Just tested it myself... yep, Final Fantasy VI does indeed slow down under catsfcplus on my New 3DS. Huh, odd. Runs full speed in PocketSNES though!

I'm on a new 3ds xl, will try Pocketsnes and see if thats better. Thanks!

Ok just getting into this homebrew 3DS stuff. (mainly for region free)

I got into it through the internet explorer app.
Am I right in thinking everytime I want to get to the homebrew menu I do it this way?

Should I be wary of using the store now and updates incase it corrects the exploit?

Forgive my ignorance.

Also is there anyway to get back to the homebrew menu once in a game?

No.

Install themehax. It will allow you to boot to the homebrew menu by holding down r during bootup.

Then launch the eshop old version downloader, download ironfall, and go back to the homebrew launcher and install ironhax. Ironhax is a but less convienient, but it's much less likely (impossible?) to get patched in a future firmware update, assuming that's something you care about.

Yep, just either of the Genesis cores. Genesis GX (I think it's called?) is slower than PicoDrive with SegaCD in my experience, so experiment some with that.

How does Ironhax work?

How does Ironhax work?

Once it's installed, you open up the game, and select the profile labeled "Ironhax". :)

Edit: New question, has anyone found the trick to turning off the bottom screen? It seems like whenever I tap it, it sometimes brings up the menu, and sometimes turns off the screen.

Depends on which half of the screen you tap. Top half clears the screen, bottom half goes to the menu.

Tried to install Ironhax but keep getting the error 'Failed to install the savefiles with the roms New3ds savedir.
Error code C8804465

Any ideas?

Edit : solved it no worries.

I have ironfall and YouTube both installed, but never updated, and I also own ocarina of time. I am on the newest firmware, 10.3. I can purchase cubic ninja if necessary.

What's my best option to install the homebrew channel?

Yeah, I don't think pocketsnes runs ffvi that great. I'm clearly getting some frameskips and distorted music. Sure it runs at 60, but you can tell its struggling.

Distorted music is just a general problem with PocketSNES, but I don't think it should be skipping frames unless you've specifically enabled frame-skip. Is V-Sync enabled? (it should be)

After all these win95 on 3ds posts I decided to integrate dosbox.
It might not work at all, the port shutterbug used was based on an ancient version of the dosbox core.

**IF it works** It should work with simple DOS games like KEEN and JAZZ just fine
To use it, set input device to joystick (4buttons/4axes + kbd arrows) that allows you to use the dpad as kbd arrows to navigate the menus and you can use START/SELECT as ENTER/ESC, you should then be able to configure your joystick in the game.

Yeah, I tried the bundled filters but was not happy with how most of them turned out, gba suffers of having a resolution too small compared to the 3ds so integer scaling looks small and full height looks a bit washed out, wanted to see if I could mask that a little using shaders.

With Game Boy games I use 2xBR and hardware bilinear filtering to get a sharper full screen image:

Bilinear only

2xBR + bilinear

The filter is actually broken as it's supposed to do some extreme corner-rounding but it's only doing a 2x nearest neighbour scale (which is great for retaining sharp pixel edges when subsequently scaling to the screen's native resolution).

While this works well in Gambatte, unfortunately with GBA games in gpSP it takes the FPS down to about 40. I'm on a build from a few weeks ago so it may not work in more recent builds.

You know, that actually works well! While you can still notice it's not pixel perfect the result is better than bilinear only.

I'm trying it with gpSP installed as CIA on N3DS and haven't had FPS issues so far.

I'm getting a weird flickers black stream across the top of my screen in CATSFC. It almost looks like a VCR with dirty heads or misaligned tracking. Anyone see this issue?

It's new with the latest nightly, but I couldn't tell you when it was introduced; the previous nightly I had was from mid-November.

Edit: this doesn't show up in Pocketsnes, which runs FF6 a lot faster in fast forward mode than CATSFC does. However the map overlay doesn't appear.
