How long have you played? It's really not blown out of proportion. There are serious hiccups and frame drops. Everything from 10-15fps drops to straight up skipping and locking up for half a second.

Just played through this on PS4, and yup, it's a mess. The framerate is just bruuuuuuutal it's hitchy as hell. The last section
was an absolute shit show.
And what was up with the super awkward horizontal looking speed? It would like accelerate to be super fast, while vertical was slow as hell.
Game was still fun, and luckily nothing about it hinges on a good framerate. It just broke the immersion

I don't think SOMA is made in Unity. It uses the in-house engine that the team had been improving since Penumbra.
That said, it's an engine that has never run particularly well. Amnesia could have weird performance issues on a wide range of PCs when it was first released and I guess SOMA is no exception.

What's sad is that most of the reviews don't mention the topic of poor performance and/or instability (I'm talking in general, not only about Firewatch). Are the reviewers blind or maybe they're afraid to score how the game performs based on the review copies? (without a day1 patch etc.).

I decided to stop on day2. Even though I want to play the game badly,I just cant.The performance drives me crazy.
It's so frustrating when reviewers don't talk about performance - which is pretty often.

Been playing for over an hour now and, IMO, it's nowhere near as bad as it's made out to be by many here. I'm by no means calling anyone a liar here but I think I just have a different definition of "terrible" or what a "mess" is.
I definitely see the stutter and hiccups due to the uncapped framerate, but it doesn't really affect the overall experience and ambiance I'm getting from the game. Having a lot of fun so far.

It's not due to uncapped framerate. It's due to poor asset streaming, which causes the hitching when trying to load assets (panning the camera, moving fast, etc). It's very noticeable, but does not make playing the game impossible, just annoying.

We've figured out there's quite a big difference between ps4's/playthroughs, possibly due to how much the hard drive impacts the streaming process.
For some, including myself, it's a very sad mess indeed.
I've never complained about performance, or ever find it handicap the game to the point that I stop playing.
Playing the game in this state is certainly possible, but it's like watching the cam rip of a movie. I'm getting the absolute worst version of an experience.

Real shame to hear, especially after SOMA too. Kinda wish Sonybwould push back on perf, especially if they have some form of exclusivity.

Absolutely! Sony have pushed this game as a console exclusive, so they need to have higher performance standards, in my opinion.
Pull a Microsoft and send over some experts (it sounds like that's what they're finally doing for the upcoming patch), or provide funds so the devs can delay to polish some more.
Did SOMA receive a performance patch yet?

Yeah, I haven't had many issues so far. I am on Day 2 and haven't noticed anything unplayable yet. It doesn't perform the greatest, but I haven't had that many issues. I don't know if it's harddrive related or not, I just put in a new faster harddrive a month or so ago, so maybe that could be an issue.

Yea this is just a ridiculous exaggeration.
Almost every other game? New low? Come on.
Even the bad performing games this gen usually run better than last gen games on PCs and consoles both, at their time of release.

Well, the game just crashed and closed itself with some weird error code and shit. That's great.
Firewatch is just another Unity game, no surprises here. The surprise would have been if it ran smoothly.
The certification process doesn't exist to ensure games run smoothly. Basically, as long as a game supports required features (e.g. trophies) and doesn't brick systems, it's going to get through. Attempting to mandate a minimum resolution/average framerate would be an absolutely terrible decision and only lead to less games releasing on the PS4.

Not sure if this the right thread but I always wanted to ask: Why do devs use Unity? It seems that games more often than not run like complete garbage and it taints their product.
There are plenty of other cheap/free alternatives, so what does Unity offer? Is it significantly easier to use? Supports more platforms out of the box?

Finished the game. Overall I still greatly enjoyed it despite the technical flaws. It glitched on me twice and crashed once. None of them lead to loss of progress > 5 minutes. I highly recommend keeping auto-save on.

I don't doubt it as the game hitches during auto-saving. Thankfully, it does not auto-save often enough to be that much of an added inconvenience on top of the game's already prevalent hitching and stuttering.
If you're really good about manually saving, then by all means, disable auto-save and you'll reduce the number of stuttering moments you get by a small %. For me, personally, it allowed me to not lose a lot of progress when the game glitched and unexpectedly crashed (PS4 system crash, something I don't remember ever having experienced before).
I dislike people with this mentality as well. The game is a technical mess, regardless of the reasons or justifications. It truly is bad, and people have every right to complain and it is fully justified. With that said, I still enjoyed the game.
I'm actually surprised at the majority of GAF. People on here have gone apeshit for a lot less.
Performance doesn't bother me for the most part. I didn't care about Blighttown or Old Yharnam and I dont care when racing games are 30fps.
But this performance is driving me crazy. The stutters are constant. I haven't even got to the crashes and I'm thinking of giving up.
I think this time was one of the exceptions. The reviews that I had glanced at that played on PS4 all mentioned performance problems. I mean go look at the first couple pages of the review thread before release, the warning signs are everywhere. I knew the PS4 version played like crap on Monday thanks to reviews/the review thread.
Unfortunately I still got it on PS4 because, well, I don't have a decent gaming PC and don't plan on getting one any time soon.
i've not seen a single person say this. it's usually one issue and they consider it a non-issue. i see no problem with that.
i played witcher, it crashed 3 times and had noticeable framerate drops in a specific area under specific weather conditions. it didn't damage my overall opinion of the 100+ hours i spent playing it.

Well, it's obvious people have had varying degrees of success regarding performance, so it's not hard to imagine that some playthroughs have been acceptable.
And some people have been so vocal about minor issues on GAF in the past, that it's understandable those people with acceptable playthroughs have difficulty believing players that are having unacceptable performance issues.

Trust me, I hate the performance issues as much as the next guy. I am not sitting here saying I am not sensitive to them or that you have to be looking to notice them. No, the issues with stuttering and hitching are noticeable, constant, and jarring. The glitching and crashing was also bad in my experience. On one occasion an event never triggered which caused me to become stuck sitting in my chair with nothing to do, and on a second occasion the game clipped me past the bounds of the map with no possibility of returning past the invisible wall back into the playable area of the game. The final time the game unexpectedly crashed, quitting to the PS4 error reporting UI.
With all that, I still enjoyed the game. It would have been much, much better had it been much more polished, but oh well. Hopefully they can get these issues fixed so other who have yet to buy the game feel safe jumping in.
The difference is Witcher 3 is easily 40+ hours per playthrough, of which maybe 1-2 are spent in areas with framerate issues. Firewatch is a 4-6 hour game which will hitch and stutter throughout its entirety and most likely crash at least 1-2x during a playthrough. The game needed more work on PS4.

See this is the thing, this is nowhere near as bad to me as Blighttown was. Sure I've had some framerate issues, especially the beginning of the game, but after about the initial 10 minutes, I haven't seen much. I'm not saying these issues don't exist I just personally haven't experienced them in as an egregious nature as many of you have it seems. I'm only on Day 2 so maybe the shitty performance will rear its ugly head again a bit more down the line. And I haven't experienced a freeze or crash yet, if those occur of course my opinion will change on the game.

Played this for a hour yesterday, and yes - it runs like garbage.
You quickly realize where the difference between a 40$ and a 20$ game is.
AKA The Witness is absolutely correctly priced.
I´m still enjoying it, but it sure would be nice if this ran and looked a lot better.
Sidenote: The PS4 theme is absolutely amazing.

The thing is, so many aspects of the game look fine-tuned to perfection. The menu when you start up the game, the UI, the general aesthetic, it looks amazing down to the details.
It feels like such a waste to play this version of it. It's like watching Lawrence of Arabia on VHS.

what I mean is, how many/much performance problems a game has is not important for me. I only need to know is if performance is perfect. No other situation is good enough for me.
I remember someone finishing the first Mafia game at 12-15 fps and he said that performance problems did not affect his enjoyment of the game.
Where is the limit if we all accept that is variable? we're doomed the moment a game with framerate problems is described as fully playable. No matter how severe those problems are.
A big part of this problem is how artists are now developers. The technical part is intrinsic and base for a video game and you can't blame engine developers. Unity engine is a shitty engine, but someone in Campo Santo made that decision, right?

Agreed, the shoddy performance is the worst part in an otherwise fantastic production. The game looks gorgeous, and they hit the nail on the head with the aesthetic. Fully cohesive and perfectly tuned.
Game would be an absolute treat at a locked 30fps. Honestly, the performance issues led me to not explore nearly as much as I would have had the game performed acceptably. I will probably replay it once it's (hopefully) patched up and running smoothly.
