GAF, I've made a huge mistake. (Job related.)

2.5 hours... lmao.

I love the first few days at a job where there isn't a ton to do. When you hit a crisis, you'd be desperately dreaming of those 2 hours where you were able to put your feet up. If this isn't a mommy thing, you need help OP. You barely lasted the full length of the first Avengers movie.

If there's any bright spot to this story, the company luckily didn't have to waste their time and resources training you before you threw a fit and walked out the door.

How old is the OP?

Seriously some of the laziest, most un-motivated people that I've had work with me and for me have been in the 18-25 year old age bracket.
Never take initiative and expect everything to be handed to them.

Sounds like whoever hired you dodged a bullet

OP, you egregiously fucked up

Don't even understand your line of thinking, holy crap. Best of luck with the next one.

I really thought this was going to be an 18 year old. OP...you done fucked up. There will be other jobs, but geez...this was not a smart move. Corporate gigs are a lot of sitting around and waiting the first couple days. Someone has to set your comp up, set your phone up, get your ID card, etc. etc.

Your mom got you the job? Oh man...I feel so bad for her. This looks really bad not just on you, but on her as well.

OP another tip - you are starting at the bottom. You are the center of your universe, but to your boss - you are literally not on his/her radar until they need you for something. They don't have to entertain you - they're trying to get shit done. Eventually you find your way and workflow becomes distributed more evenly as your role gets defined, but holy shit you cannot expect senior level/management to accommodate you on your first day when you literally have no idea how to do anything or help them with anything.

Im having trouble understanding how you went from "im bored, where is the training" to "i quit, you guys are disorganized" in such a short amount of time. It doesn't even seem like you insisted on being assigned a task. What were you thinking? Are you always this impulsive or is there a part of the story you are not sharing?

I wouldn't say you fucked up your future at all, but it's a fucking reality check for sure. You need to take this situation and make sure you never do it again, especially by making these crazy life decisions after 2 FREAKING HOURS! What you really should work on is your patience, because there's no way in hell I would ever expect someone to come to work and leave after 2.5 hours, especially at your position.

Don't kill yourself over something like this, we all have to make mistakes and learn from them. I went to jail and almost had a felony, which could have fucked up my future forever, but it got dropped luckily. Even if I could take it back, I learned so much from it that I wouldn't want to, so let this be a turning point for you as well.

Can't be a reality check when you fall right back to your comfort zone.

Reality check may be in a few years when one isn't making the money they want/need and realized they fucked a great opportunity.

It took me a month to get properly trained for my role, first few weeks I couldn't get access to shit. The person who was supposed to train me was away on vacation for 2 weeks after that.

OP you're dumb as hell. I just tried to help as much as I could during that time until they could get me up to speed.

OP I am 28 years old and I have been struggling to find a 9-5 corporate job for nearly a year now and you get a given a what is a free ride thanks to your mum's connection and you squander it by quitting the job because you had nothing to do and was bored. Which made reading your post so frustrating as I would have loved it if someone could open doors for me to step on the Job front instead of trawling job listing and sending out 3-6 application per day and get either nothing or "rejection" back.

You could have initiative and look around the office, get to know the people, the company, research on what your role involves.

But nah you were like "lets quit, make my mum look bad in the process and post this on gaf."

I feel sorry for your mum.

This really isn't the end of the world. Fuck if I'm reading a dozen pages so this may have been mentioned or glossed over or whatever, but just get back to the job searching. Worst case scenario is that you left a job for this new one, so now you're unemployed; but if you were unemployed before this job then being unemployed again for however long it takes to find another gig probably isn't the end of the world. You fucked up by bailing but I highly doubt your life is fucked by a 3-hour glitch. Also, you don't even need to mention it to anyone ever and it's unlikely your next employer will find out.

I'm sorry to say this OP but you sound like a total idiot, you aren't going to get far in life with an attitude like that. That said I assume the OP is taking the piss, don't think anyone in their right mind would do something that stupid. I never wish ill on people so I hope it's just a hard lesson learnt for you OP and something else comes along, still though what the fuck?

So why is this a bad decision? To me, sitting around for 2.5 hours is a huge waste of time if you're not working at your job. I mean they could've at least sent him home since they obviously had nothing prepared for him for the day.

It's a bad decision because the world doesn't revolve around you. The entire company isn't going to stop operating to roll out the red carpet and shower it with rose petals in advance of your grand arrival.

You were getting paid to do nothing. I would have rode that train as long as possible.

It's nice that you were feeling bad about being unproductive but you probably should have just kept your head down and waited for someone to get you going on something, or offer to help with any task, even if it was a couple days. A lot of times with new hires we have them do menial tasks when everyone is too busy to be teaching them. Just remember this next time

The best way to make a good impression at a new job is to find a way to be productive or helpful during that early period when you might have a lot of down time. OP, you fucked up.

mYA5eqE.jpg

You left?? Why would you leave work? You felt that entitled to immediate training that you key after 2.5 hours???? Wow....woooooooooooooooow.

I have learned from this, thankfully, and realize that corporate jobs fucking suck. I know I can be making more money than I do now but damn, if this is the way the world works, I don't want to be a part of it.
This is like writing off all video games ever made because the start menu took too long to load for the first game you powered on in your life.

He's a 28 year old working at a fucking GameStop. His Mom is, rightfully, worried about him and stuck her neck out to give him a chance at a career, and he decided to fucking walk out 2 and a half hours into the job. If you don't understand why this is a bad decision, then I'd advise you to study this thread carefully.

Jesus, really OP? I have never had a job start properly on Day 1 before. The soonest I've ever had was day 2. The longest wait was a job that took almost a full week to have a full workstation and desk set up for me to work on and you know what? That job ended up being one of my favorites

EDIT: Okay technically there was one job that flew me across the country to a trade show on my second day that was pretty fast. But also sort of weird

...WTF?!
i don't know if i should laugh or cry, other people would give their left ball for a job like that.

funny enough, you didn't only fuck yourself, your mothers credibility is also in shambles. i understand why she is angry.

and if you ever think "im going to kill her" again, take a deep breath, and run face first against a wall plz. its your mother you ungrateful fuck...

sever your ties, don't talk to her again, whatever. i don't care. but you are only showing what a spoiled brat you are...

Perhaps your best course of action would have been to approach your boss and ask if there was anything you could do?

There are a lot of different people involved in getting you setup when you first start a job, who also normally have their own responsibilities to deal with as well.

2.5 hours clearly shows the OP never had any intention of doing this job and should have told his mother he would not take it under any circumstances so she was not embarrassed

This is what makes it frustrating.

He had a golden opportunity to build a nice career and he just threw it away. This is stuff that people would kill for, especially someone trying to get out of dead end retail.

It's not fatal, but man oh man, that's a very rare opportunity.

The first day and even week can be very lax... They have to build you up, so even if there's work they rather not have you make mistakes. My first week at my last job I just spent it stapling paper.. Then I became the supervisor within a year... I say it was a big mistake

How the hell did you fuck up sitting there and doing nothing? You could've done almost anything while waiting other then what you did and not fucked it up lol.

Man oh man I have spent tons of hours without anything to do at basically every corporate job I've worked. Your value is no longer just linearly correlated with the amount of hours you are engaged in labor; I was worth paying not because I had eight hours of every single day of work to do for them but because when I did have stuff to do I was unusually qualified and skilled at performing that work

(And of course there were sometimes 10 and even a 14 hour day once because when suddenly there is something that needs to be done now it needs to be done now)

To be fair to you that seems ridiculous that they just left you there with no induction or anything. I wouldn't sweat it too much really, any job where you're not even tasked to do something on the first day is probably not worth doing

This thought process is God damn stupid. I am sure there are people starting off at Google who aren't tasked with all but shit on their first day, but of course you'd say that job isn't worth doing, right?

Very few jobs are actually "worth doing." It's about the money.

Tech workers at Google (any big tech company) aren't doing shit their first days besides possibly some boring-ass orientation, getting their computer and accounts and getting taken out to lunch by the manager. It will generally be sometime in your second week that you do the first piece of actual 'work', it's all reading docs and getting up to speed before that.

The best part is that he wasn't even qualified for the job, good luck getting another shot at a job like this.

LOL, you were getting paid for doing nothing and you were so in your head that you freaked out about it and quit your job? I guarantee this isn't the first time this type of behavior has lead to negative consequences. What you need to do is make it a habit to chill out about shit.

Everyone makes dumb mistakes. The problem is that approaching your manager about it was the dumb mistake.

Arguing with them when they reassured you it was just training and it will be fine was where you fucked up.

I would understand if you have been like this for a few weeks or months, and quiting since you feel you are wasting your time, but a couple hours?! It's a huge mistake and I hope it doesn't haunt you for the rest of your career, but remember to be patient next time. A lot more patient, especially the first few weeks.

5 years ago when I was temping at a job I also had nothing to do, it was boring as hell and yes torturous. But that was during the age when Smartphones were just up and coming. Now that I got a smartphone, I can do nothing all day.

Yes, you fucked up. No, you're not fucked for the rest of you life or anything like that.

It's a learning experience the you very much need to learn from. Before going to the manager about something like that, take a real deep breath and ask yourself if it's worth it - in this case, you probably would have realized that complaining to a boss about not having enough work and storming out on your first day just has bad news written all over it. You don't have any power in this situation, she obviously did. You don't taunt someone with a gun in their hand.

Corporate jobs often have downtime, it's just a fact. People will ask for your help when they need you and sometimes they just don't need you. Other times you'll be working on three projects at once. You can't just expect a steady, manageable stream of work. It's just not how these jobs go.

But no, you're not screwed. Just go back to square one and look for jobs again, and probably leave this experience off of your resume. If you got a job the first time you can get it again.
