The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

Nah no need to go no-offense, the general public is generally dumb. Even MIB points that out.

I think I'm just feeling charitable to dumb people this week.

I saw Tomb Raider (2001) in the theaters, and at the time I thought it was a pretty great movie. But I never watched it again, until a couple of days ago. Man, that movie is just wall-to-wall stupid. It never relents in it's stupidity. I never saw any of that fifteen years ago. After I turned off the TV, I could only think "Man, I used to be pretty dumb." I've seen some people saying it's so bad it's good, but I don't think my brain is ready to process it on that level yet.

So I don't think I can fault someone for being dumb, and for them not finding fault with the relatively minor problems in Frozen.

Note: When I saw The Phantom Menace in 1999, I already knew something was wrong with that movie, but The Phantom Menace is a more extreme case than Tomb Raider.

what ever happened to cheezapocalypse anyway

and I think Lindsay is well-off nowadays since she has a job

Brad really seems like he loves every facet of film and it still shows through the reviews.
Brad is so entertaining I can watch a 45 minute long V-log with no editing that's just a reaction to a movie he's seen and still enjoy it.
I haven't been able to tolerate Phelous and Lupa's videos for years, even before they left the site. Their humor was just grating and annoying. I can't imagine it's any better now, if anything there's probably a lot of bitter "Doug Walker is Satan" jokes (even though from what I hear, he's not responsible, the CEO Mike Michaud is).
As someone who started binging Allison's Movie Nights videos, they're pretty damn great and don't have any bitter jabs at all.

Hell, watching them ironically shows why Channel Awesome really should have been checking out Patreon earlier; they contain lots of well-used footage from the movies and are over 15 minutes long.

I was wondering this myself, I absolutely love Lindsay (for more than just her content :D ) and never stopped following her but had some trouble when the site disappeared though I happened to stumble across her Vimeo page with has new content which I was really happy with.

I don't mind the skits, I get a good laugh out of many of them. Doug is the master of epic freakouts. Plus the show help me catch up or remember movies I've forgotten about and make great conversation pieces when talking about movies.

Also been getting into Anime Abandon too. Bennett reminds me of myself when it comes to taste in anime, we both have no issues watching dubs and hate that there are parts of medium that's pandering to a specific creepy fanbase as of late. He also has respect for voice actors, which another internet personality by the name of Kirbopher has years of knowledge on.

I like Lindsey's work, though I'm not really the demographic she's speaking too but they're nice think pieces without all the craziness which is good once in a while.

Spoony... well, I guess I liked his old stuff when it did Final Fantasy. Though he did a brief clip on FFXIV,it wasn't funny. Just him ragging on the game like he was legitimately angry. Not into wrestling or DnD so it's a pretty big miss for me. Miss the Dr. Insaneo bits. You'd think he'd expand on other RPGs and branch out into reviews up perhaps he's grown out of that. Nice to see him cameo once in a while though.

Angry Joe... meh, I guess I grew out of watching angry gamer critic bit. He has his moments though.

I can't remember the name, but who was that crazy girl that was into Digimon that cameoed with Doug a long time ago? Jess-something. Don't really see anything from her anymore.

As an update, he's Jacob as of a few days ago.

Wow... did not even know.

JesuOtaku was the girl you're talking about. She stopped doing reviews a few years ago to focus on completely other things. She posted a video about this while sitting in a tree. Shouldn't be to hard to find I think. It was a really nice goodbye video.

i think phelous is great. he's always been self-aware in a sense that it feels like he knows it could go away at any moment, so he tries to at least have a little fun with it.

lindsay ellis is the real breakout star as far as i'm concerned, although she doesn't really have a lot of attention on her, losing the chezapocalypse site probably wasn't a good step in this direction, and since she's focused on loose canon once a month, it's seemed like interest has dried up. but i think she offers some thoughtful analyses and puts together the best shows. even when she was basically doing doug's 'review-the-movie' format, i thought she had better comedic timing and more genuinely interesting things to say.

Lindsay was really, really good. She was a lot funnier, while being a lot more insightful. Just look at her her Lord of the Rings review.

Even when she was doing more the Dough-Format she was a lot funnier with it. Her Labyrinth Review was hilarious.

As for other reviews, I've never really gotten into many of the other reviewers on the site other than Mike J. I'll watch Todd in the Shadows when it's a One Hit Wonderland episode. I've seen a few Angry Joe episodes, but not a regular viewer.

I still crack up at the crotch jokes. It's very childish sure, but her reactions are still aamzing.

She looks very different from what I'm used to (but I guess that's somewhat the point), but it's great to see JO again!

Also: "Like a horrible Bethasda glitch!" Never change man, that was amazing! xD

Phelous is great. He's also my go-to guy for Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil stuff. You can tell he loves the IPs but knows when something about them is shit.

I stopped following him when he changed his site though, since now it looks like a Geocities page. I mean, look at this shit.

When I first got into watching internet reviews, I mostly watched Critic but now I really only can say that my favorites are Lindsay or Brad. I got into Lindsay fairly early on and I'm pretty much a fan of most of her stuff, especially when the Chick became less of a female-Critic and more her own character. It helps I like her supporting cast and love when Nella appeared in a video or Elise as those two are always a blast, as a contrast to my loathing of the man and woman who now appear in pretty much every Critic video.

While it's a shame that Lindsay doesn't do Chick videos anymore, I do enjoy her Loose Canon videos and find the premise interesting. They're funny, but also share a lot of points I agree with, particularly with her Phantom of the Opera Loose Canon video, that points out the complete contrast of pre ALW Phantom and post. Also some insane stuff I never knew, like Phantom of the Mall which I might have to check out for how bad it looks.

Maybe this is just an accidental typo, but... JO just came out as a man, so could you try to use the right pronouns and say "he"?

Jo's cool. When he posted that picture of himself I saw it first before I even saw the rest of his tweets and he way he worded it, referring in the third person, I thought it was a brother.

I wasn't really familiar with his work much though since I'm not into that stuff. I just remembered him from when he was in the last Anniversary special and even though I wasn't familiar with the source material and character he was playing, I thought it was pretty funny. At least one of the only good parts of that special really. (I don't even remember much from it. Kickassia will always be GOAT in my book.)

Yeah I didn't mean to dismiss anything or offend JO there. I said man underneath it with the Besathda joke, it's just automatism from the TGWTG days.

Well, I learned something from Linsday's twitter today, and it's a bit disappointing (this is in regard to her collaboration with Doug and Brentalfloss for Moulin Rouge review:

Brent made a lot of money off that. So did Doug. Guess how much I made. #spoilers #theanswerisnothing

I don't know if Rap Critic and Cinema snob still uploads videos on TGWTG but they're the only guys I follow, watch videos and keep up with on social media. The rest of the - what I believe is considered old - cast/contributors on the website became so grating to me. Really REALLY just screamy annoying videos with bad in-jokes. Nostalgia Critic got very silly just before the show was canned. Once it came back I initially liked the new cast, family guy-cut cutaways and slightly serious opinions/analysis given but it didn't feel very Nostalgia Critic and eventually I got bored of it. I stopped visiting the site religiously after giving up halfway through the 3rd anniversary. That video was just so goddamn awful. Then I started reading all the crazy "behind the scenes" nonsense that took place whether it was unfair treatment of fans/contributors etc. It just made me realise how superficial everyone seemed on that website. Coincidentally, I stopped watching Screwattack around that time for the same reason. Might've been before that. Around the time that Handsome Tom was dropped and he started appearing on TGWTG website.

In a way, I felt it was kinda of a "good ol days" thing where I'd always look forward to the day when a new Nostalgia Critic would drop and then after watching it see what other new contributors delivered. Phelous's first video "Mac and Me" had me in laughter tears so so much that I watched it again and again. Sadly, he took a different direction once he settled on TGWTG and has not created a video that was anywhere near as funny as Mac and Me. Real Shame. Todd in the Shadows was good up until a point where it seemed that he was struggling to find good material to review and his opinions just weren't credible enough for me anymore. Guru Larry was awesome! Still try to keep up with him. Spoony's early videos were gold. Sega CD/FMV videos are still so enjoyable to watch today. And then something happened and he began to adopt this bizarre higher superiority attitude alongside that Dr Insano garbage and things weren't the same. It also didn't help that he was somewhat of an asshole when I met him in person once. Thankfully, meeting Jew Wario later on that day cheered me up and we spent a good 15 minutes talking about video games and online videos. Wonderful person (RIP).

Phelous was entertaining until his reviews stopped being about the movie and started being about him being an internet reviewer.

I want to say to everyone who hasn't watched phelous in awhile, he has dialed back a lot on the meta stuff. His style still isn't as everyone but it's not so much commentary on reviewing himself as it was for a little while. His latest cartoon reviews are really evident of this. There's a nice balance now. Since for awhile I kind of got off of his stuff for the same reasons.

Also he has quite a lot more real reviews as well. Such as his feelings on DBZ and Ghostbusters. If you got nothing better to do one day I would say to maybe try and give him a try again.

Special Editorial: Where's the Fair Use?

Joined by IHateEverything and YourMovieSucks, they go over the importance of Fair Use and how big business is trying to cripple it. Brad Jones pipes in at one point mentioning how one of his Midnight Screenings somehow got flagged (despite having zero copyrighted material).

It's sad that these guys get fucked over, yet Chris Bores can get away with putting copyrighted footage on his DVDs.

It seems if you sign up for the video player service, you can see next week's video early (something about questioning if Goofy is badass).

...........& now I'm getting Maker.tv flashbacks.

Turns out for me to get Vessel to work, I just have to set it to 480p. Not sure if it's my shitty PC or Vessel....

I know the Best Friends Zaibatsu use Vessel as well, and if you sign up you can watch their videos three days before going up on YouTube.

Confession; I loved this movie as a kid, but that's largely because it was so much darker, nastier, and grittier than the other superhero films we were getting at the time (Batman & Robin). The CG was "alright" for the time (to a kid, anyway), and Spawn himself looked great (the all-green glowing eyes helped immensely).

Burned-face-mask-materializes.gif

... But it hasn't held up well, and DEFINITELY doesn't compared to the HBO cartoon.

Still, I have a soft spot for this silly, goofy, edgy movie that fully captured the 90's in all its best and worst attributes.

I loved Spawn because I love henshin heroes and it was something to see in theaters (yes I saw it in theatres). Seriously, I wish more american superheroes have that henshin feature.

Also Goofy is the only Disney mascot who had sex.

Speaking of NChick sucks that her Shorts! series didn't last, I actually thought they were very informative. I don't think online reviewers covered animated shorts.
