The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

Chick already handled Return to Neverland and I agree with her than the Lion King sequels or Aladdin sequels should have gotten the theater release instead.

The head of the studio was a Peter Pan fangirl. Return to Neverland was her baby, which is why it got a theater push, and she had an epic meltdown when Lasseter saved Tink 1 by taking her off it.

I just remember the jungle book 2 sucking. Unlike Peter Pan, which seemed to have a decent budget. JB2 felt like a straight to did fare that someone realized at the last minute to give a theatrical release.

The head of Disneytoon was Sharon Morrill. She was put there by Eisner, and she was reportedly all about the money and doing whatever her bosses wanted, but Peter Pan was her favorite Disney movie and she really cared about it. That's why Return to Neverland got pushed harder than other Disney sequels.

Disneytoon was actually already getting started on the Tinkerbell movies shortly before Lasseter came in and shut down the sequel factory, saying that Disneytoon needed to step up it's quality and worry less about profits and more about making good movies.

Disneytoon was lined up to make at least four Tink movies to start, but Morrill apparently took this project very personally, and had a vision for what the movies were supposed to be. She churned through dozens of writers and directors, and kept kicking them all off the project because they couldn't understand her vision. And was apparently blowing a ton of money on throwaway animation.

Lasseter came in to see what the problem was, and he said that what he saw was an unwatchable mess. When Morrill was out of the office, he came back and met with the (latest) writer and director and asked what the problem was, and they said it was Morrill, that she wasn't a writer or director, but she was making crazy, unreasonable demands. Lasseter asked them what kind of movie they would make if they were the ones calling the shots, and he liked everything he heard from them. The next day, Lasseter met with Morrill and told her that her movie was finished, and she should make a new one like [insert everything the writer and director had told him].

Morrill decided that the problem wasn't her movie, it was that nobody could understand her vision unless they actually saw it, so she ignored Lasseter's orders. She ordered a small fraction of Disneytoon to start making a movie the way Lasseter wanted, and everyone else should keep working on her movie. And her movie should be kept in hidden folders, while the decoy movie should be copied to everyone's desktop and opened up whenever someone came to visit. When asked why the movie's taking so long, employees were ordered to make up excuses.

Eventually Lasseter popped by again to look at the movie, and he asked how the second Tink movie was coming along (since there were supposed to be four in the pipeline). When he saw that the second movie was an obvious sequel to Morrill's movie, he realized that Morrill was lying, and Morrill was very fired.

Since the Tink movies were screwed, Pixar came in and helped Disneytoon get the first one done on time.

All this DisneyToons stuff is interesting, Cheerilee. I feel like I've heard about the stuff in your first post about it, but the stuff about Morrill is news to me.

Yikes. This is why you shouldn't go too personal.

But yeah it does explain why Tink suddenly has her own line.

Holy shit, thanks for sharing this - I'd never heard about it.

Wow, very interesting! Thanks for sharing! Can I read more on this somewhere? And I really wonder if there's any unreleased footage leaked, since there seemingly were lots of throwaway animation.

Wow.....that is some interesting history. I always assumed that the Tinker Bell films were throwaway films with some really impressive animation but hearing how Pixar came in to help finish the first one and how Lasseter like DisneyToon's ideas for a movie with Tinker Bell, I gotta watch some of those movies now.

Its a shame that Morrill really messed up production and management on DisneyToon (from your two informative posts, she didn't only mess up Tinker Bell) but she is gone now, so the studio while shifting focus on Frozen, is still around and working hard on future projects :).

The Morrill version of Tink 1 was known as "Tinkerbell and the Ring of Belief".

There's a storyboard clip on Youtube.

I should warn you that the Tinkerbell movies are kids movies. They're quality kids movies, but they're still kids movies, and not the sort of "all ages" movie that a studio like WDAS or Pixar might put out.

christmas with the kranks review could have been fun if he just committed to the old style. to be honest, i thought referential jokes got to the point a lot faster than the skits did. the memes were almost always bad, but i did enjoy 'timing!' as that was a joke that can actually work anywhere (and i love that it's always the same shot).

that ending was cringey as fuck though. if doug wanted to be serious for a moment, i could have done without the tonal whilpash of the movie commentary, the heartfelt moment, and the skits within it. doug made videos so that people would like him. got it. did we really need to see that life was beating him down? it comes across as whiny and it doesn't come across genuine at all.

I think the only films he's done are Signs and The Last Airbender.

My guess is The Sixth Sense and The Happening

Devil and After Earth as well. I could have sworn he did The Happening but I must be getting it mixed up with Chris Struckmann.

Personally I want Lady in the Water but I think it's too mediocre.

He did Signs, The Last Airbender, Devil (Shyamlan only produced it) and After Earth

There's still The Sixth Sense (possibly to see if it still holds up, it's old enough to be nostalgic), Unbreakable (Doug mentioned before he actually likes this movie so probably not), The Village, Lady in the Water, and The Happening.

Yep. He stopped posting videos to the site and was let go. He complained on Twitter they didn't tell him. ... Well when you stop submitting stuff, chances are they're going to stop supporting you.

YouTube copyright bullshit.

Y'know looking back at those old anniversary videos (The Brawl to To Boldly Flee) there's very few of those contributors still on the site isn't there?

Yeah. It's funny to watch now because each movie would add more and more. Now that the 5 years have passed, so many have left and been replaced. All the ones I liked are gone. I just follow them on Twitter or Tumblr now.

Seeing the breakdown of the site's community is so sad. I used to love all these guys back in the day.

Nah, I agree. They all felt unique from each other. To me, CA used to feel like this big multimedia site that covered a huge array of pop culture. I'd come for Linkara and Nostalgia Critic and check out everyone on the site.

At least that one trailer guy is gone. Fuck that guy.
